Intro to Movie Slide Leslie: Hi, it takes months / years to go through the process of retrofitting your house with photovoltaic panels. Our Seeking Solar Panel team has stapled ourselves to a work-order and we have spent all semester re-designing information flows. We are Master students at UC Berkeley in the School of Information, taking Dr. Bob Glushko’s Information Systems and Service Design class. Our group includes diverse multi-diciplinary backgrounds of 2 computer scientists, an engineer, and architectural designer. Together we have established front stage and back stage boundaries that can create a smarter end-to-end photovoltaic / solar panel system. The best way show our industry wide service system re-design is to juxtapose the “old-way” (point to Georg) to the “new way” (point to Saghar). Let me introduce you to our short film of actor-network touchpoints to go solar.

Thinking to Go Solar: Act 1 0:30 min. (total: 2:00 min)

Travis: Introduces each Act: Travis: Act 1: Thinking to go Solar.

context: Too much Info -- I want to go green.Georg: I have decided to be a responsible citizen and I just want to start to go solar! I can save on my electric bills. Where should I start? <someone hands Gerog a solar book> Any websites available? Any local information? Oh! There is a lot of scattered information but how can I connect them to each other? Which one is more reliable? There is just too much information.

context: All roads point to Solar Project Portal.Saghar: I want to be a responsible citizen and do my part to go solar! It’s funny, my electric bill, billboards, tv ads, the home show -- everyone keeps pointing me to a Solar Seeking Project portal system. Saghar on computer: Wow! I just need to click the ‘go-solar’ button. It looks like their integrated platform will always assist me wherever I am. I feel confident to go solar! Information is at my finger tips!

architecture will support Solar Panel Experts, Certified Solar Panel Sellers, experienced solar panel customers with a database to streamline all information. Knowledge can be accessed with multi-channel technology like websites, mobile apps, and technology enhanced person-to-person help.

Can my house really have Solar? Understanding logistics Act 2 0:30 min. (total: 2:30 min)

Travis: Act 2: Can my house really have Solar?

context: Seeking answers... phone book, friends?Gerog: Well, I have been trying to figure out what to do for a day now. But I really want to help the environment. How do I start thinking about if my house can really go Solar? Let me use the phone book and start finding solar designers. Or maybe I can call some of my friends, who just installed some panels. I wonder which contractors are better? How should I compare them and evaluate their past performance? Or figure out which solar panels are the best. This is taking a lot of my time and I am overwhelmed with a lot of information - sometimes contradicting other info - and I have not made any progress in the real work!To Do: Get phone book

context: Input initial information.Saghar: This is fun. It looks like this project portal will help me walk through the steps to see about going Solar. Let me sign on and became a member of the Solar Project portal. I’m also going to install a mobile app on my smart phone. It looks like I also have access to local communities and consultants. Ohhh -- this is great! Here’s some priority questions that I’m being asked. I was wondering if re-roofing last summer was a good idea... and it was, because my solar project might have had to be put on hold! It’s so great I can chat, call, or make my way around this site. And it looks like for someone who is more advanced; they can easily skip over all the explanations. I’ve heard such horror stories from friends installing solar. But this takes me step-by-step through the whole process. No worries and frustration anymore! Talking to my neighbors is one task that keeps flashing at me... I’ll have to take care of that over coffee.

Can I get a Quote?: Act 3 0:30 min. (total: 3:00 min)

Travis: Act 3: Can I get a Quote?

context: All contractors all asking the same questionsGeorg: I have called different sellers and every time I have to answer the same questions! I must have given my address, and the date my house was built at least 10 times. <quick shot of contractors running around - through window> Some of the contractors even came out to my house and turned me down because I don’t have enough sun. I’m having to organize so many meetings to meet each solar designer. I am slowly learning what questions I will be asked; I just wish there was a shared place so I don’t have to keep repeating myself. Is this really worth it? I’m now on week 2. Will I end up with the best installer? I feel like I’m wasting everyone’s time, esp. my own! When can we start? When will this FINISH?!

context: Look at recommendations of Solar Contractors, get price & schedule quote.Saghar: Wow, on my 3rd hour and it is just like a piece of cake. By entering my address, or using the GPS geo-location feature on my smart phone, in less than a minute I am matched with local solar designers and all their credentials. I can save them as my friends and they can start interacting with me! They know my latitude / longitude and azimuth for the solar angles. A google satellite image is automatically linked into my profile. I can even start to compare the different solar designers according to my preferred criteria. I can see when the good 5 starred rated ones will be free to meet. It looks like the popular solar designers are booked out 1 month out.

Site / Building Analysis: Act 4 0:30 min. (total: 3:30 min)

Travis: Act 4: Site / Building Analysis

Context:Last week, three possible installers visited my house. All of them asked me the same questions and I think all of them are collecting the same information. I don’t know whom I just pick, I’ll probably just toss a coin. Content:

● Several installers visit the same site● Focus on redundant work● Buyer doesn’t have understanding of what

happens● Buyer chooses an installer by gut feeling● Remeasure everything, designer randomly

asks questions in no order. ie: what is your jurisdiction? what’s your electric bill? oh yeah... do you have to replace your roof?

Context:Buyer can collect his/her own building / site data for a discount! <like Progressive’s Flo> The more information that is collected, the less time your “matched” solar designer will take to give you a design. Content:

● Buyer collects important data by himself● Buyer enters the data in his mobile app -

manually, verbally, and with camera.● Can use video to upload lidar points● Phone can talk to you to give more

directions.● Discount for photographing Floor Plans

<use Bob’s drawings>● Data is provided to installers who can

evaluate the project● Buyer compares bids and installers and

decides on information● Once fields are filled out, historic financial

data will give a cost estimate.● Solar Design comes over to quickly verify

and discuss design.

Approvals/Construction: Act 5 0:30 min. (total: 4:00 min)

<last scene to be filmed, because contractor rips up solar panel dreams>

Context:After I finally found my contractor, we planned the system. However, the contractor forgot about my special roof framework and we had to remove the first part of the construction again. This was very frustrating to me as it costs me a lot of time and money. Not to mention all the drawing and re-drawing that had to be done to get the solar design approved by the building department. I just want to get it done so that I don’t have to think about it any more... Content:

● Plans are made● Rework has to be done as important

things haven’t been considered● Project gets delayed● Bad customer experience

Context:Outside. Seeing augmented design. Right now, everything looks good, we are going to install the whole thing next week! Content:

● “This is exactly what I want!”● 3D augmented models are made and can

be shared with the building department for faster reviews, and to get approvals from my neighbors and me.

● Buyer points to important points, the seller would have neglected first

● Project progress is monitored through our service system

● Good customer experience because of good communication, expectations and agreements.

Finish/Maintenance: Act 6 0:30 min. (total: 4:30 min)

Context:Finally I have my solar system. It works but I don’t want to do it again, because it was so frustrating to me. Content:

● Project is done in over time and more expensive as expected

● Buyer receives not much information● Buyer feels alone with his system

Context:My solar system is on my roof and I am pretty happy that I can do something to make my neighborhood greener. Through the website I got access to the local solar community and we meet regularly. Furthermore, I can share my experiences with people who are interested in solar systems. Spread the word! Content:

● Project is done as planned● Buyer receives actual data about his solar

system via cell phone● Our system provides a solar community

where he can share his experiences and grade his seller
