Rainwater Harvesting – How They Work 雨水收集系统示意图• Captures, diverts and stores rainwater
for later use. There are six component of a rainwater harvesting system:获取 , 分流 , 储存雨水 . 系统由六部分组成 :– Collection surface (roof or parking lot) 收集层面 ( 屋顶或停车场 )– Collection and conveyance system
(gutter/downspout) 收集和导流系统( 排水沟 )
– Pre-screening and first flush diverter 预过滤和分流– Storage tank 贮水器– Distribution or outflow system 分配流出系统– Overflow, filter path or secondary runoff

Rainwater Harvesting – Maintenance 雨水收集 - 维护• Routinely inspect and repair deficiencies of structural components and connections of the RWHS including
tank, pump and pipes. • An aboveground RWHS should be emptied prior to storm events, when possible, and disconnected before
winter. • Gutters and downspouts should be checked twice per year to ensure they are free of leaves and other debris. • Inspect and clean pre-screening devices and first flush diverters four times a year. • The condition of overflow pipes, overflow filter paths and/or secondary runoff. reduction practices should be
inspected yearly. • The rainwater should not be used for irrigation if the roof has been treated for moss .

George C. Marshall High School Rainwater Harvesting Project
Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division/DPWES
Project Detail 项目详述Purpose: • Onsite for water quality and quantity benefits – maximize the treatment of stormwater from
about 16.3 acres of school site.• Harvest water for reuse on site to irrigate 8.7 acres of ball fields. • Reduce stresses to the receiving stream – provide channel protection.
Project Overview:• Installation of a 340,000 gallon underground cistern for stormwater harvesting.• Installation of irrigation system for three ball fields. • Installation of a pump system for irrigation.• Installation of a UV disinfection system to treat water to ensure student safety• Installation of storm drainage structures to divert flow to the cistern.• Restoration of the site and installation of an access road for maintenance.
Benefits:• Water quality benefits obtained include removal of 11.3 lbs./yr. total phosphorus, 81 lbs./yr.
total nitrogen, and 1,743 lbs./yr. sediments leading to the Pimmit Run. • Water quantity benefits: 713,472 cubic ft. used onsite thereby improving downstream
condition of Pimmit Run• Net saving of about $52K per year in use of potable water for irrigation

Infiltration Practices – How They Work 渗滤实现示意图• Replenish water and eliminate
the need for costly structures and improvements to convey runoff from the developed site.
• May not be constructed on fill material or slopes steeper than 15%.
• Reduce the temperature of urban streams.– Encourage infiltration of
stormwater into the ground and promote groundwater recharge;
– Stormwater travels underground to the stream.
25
Stormwater Management in Fairfax County, Virginia
Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division/DPWES
Infiltration Practices – Maintenance 渗滤实现 - 维护• Mow pretreatment devices such
as vegetated filter strips as necessary and properly dispose of the clippings
• Inspect pretreatment devices and the facility at least twice per year and remove sediment, trash and organic debris as needed
• Remove any plants and trees from the facility as needed
• Replace pea gravel and topsoil when clogged
