Almost nothing influences the quality ofour lives more than the design of ourcities. Syracuse and many other citiesshare a common problem of vacancyand disinvestment. These spaces, primarily storefronts, are the figurativeand literal face of the city.

Our purpose is to turn an abandonedstorefront, a source of blight andnegativity, into a vibrant and activespace that is home to progressivethinking and action for the future ofDowntown Syracuse. In addition,we hope that this investment andpositive activity will attract a longterm occupant for the space, allowingStorefront:Syracuse to repeat

this process in vacant storefrontsthroughout the neighborhood.

Located in historic Hanover SquareStorefront:Syracuse is operatingout of a decades vacant storefrontin the State Tower building. Theprojects objectives are to overcomedisinvestment and host programmingthat reaches out to people fromcommunities which usually havenothing to do with architecture or urbanrevitalization in order to involve them inthese processes. Once completed theStorefront will be a public place for acity wide conversation about the futureof our City.

    STOREFRONT:SYRACUSE

Storefront:Syracuse is a centerfor design, a forum for publicengagement, and a space to imagineand realize the citys latent potentials. It is a place to connect designers andthe populations they design for throughthe transformation and occupation ofa vacant storefront. Revitalizing thestorefront through construction andprogramming is not only important forimproving the beauty, marketability, and pride in the neighborhood but itwill also increase residents confidenceand inspiration to complete similarprojects on their own.

We want to actively engage newgroups of people, or new communitiesentirely, to become part of thepublic which is invoked when newdevelopment programs, economicschemes, or legislation related tothe growth and future of our City isdeveloped. Through education about

the vital importance design and thebuilt environment play in citizens lives,we hope our project results, even if insome small way, in a better educatedand engaged citizenry.

The Storefront is an urban laboratoryfor the City of Syracuse to engagein conversation and debate with oneanother and with those in a positionto make meaningful change regardingthe issues that construct the physicaland social spaces of the city.
