Storage Solutions for VirtualizationSimplifying the provisioning, acceleration, and protection of your virtual workloads with no hidden costs.
“Finding an end to end solution that provides extremely fast IOPS for advanced computational science in a scalable design that is user friendly was not easy. Synology's solutions including FlashStation and RackStation allowed me to spin up affordable storage resources needed to take FILCS (our proprietary machine learning software) to the next level.” – Christian Palmaz, CEO, Palmaz Vineyards.

Choosing the Right Storage SystemEstimate your IOPS requirements and reserve 20% or more as buffer to allow subsequent adjustments. If significant data growth is expected (e.g. data analytics), also consider future storage scalability. Below are several models that are suitable for virtualization environments:

Managing Performance
For HDD arrays, enabling SSD cache in a virtualization environment is strongly recommended. While each SATA drive provides roughly 75 IOPS and each SAS drive provides 150 IOPS, creating an SSD cache with two SSDs can increase the IOPS by 70 times or more (using the models below as examples):
SSD cache
Read Write
(Unit IOPS)
SSD Cache - iSCSI random access (4KB)
RAID type
RAID 10 is recommended for deployments that require the highest performance, at the cost of storage space. RAID 5 / RAID F1 provides a more balanced approach to storage utilization and fault tolerance, with RAID F1 being specifically designed for all-flash arrays to prevent multiple SSDs from being worn out at the same time.
RAID Type
RAID 0
Fault Tolerance Capacity Random ReadPerformance
Random WritePerformance
None N (total number of disks) Highest Highest
RAID 5 / RAID F1 1 disk failure N-1 Good Good
RAID 6 2 disk failure N-2 Good Good
RAID 10 1 disk failure ineach sub-RAID
N/2 High High
Thick- v.s. Thin-provisioned LUN
• Thick-provisioned LUN: pre-allocates all required storage space to deliver higher and more consistent performance.• Thin-provisioned LUN: on-demand allocation to maximize storage utilization; supports snapshots, VMware VAAI, Windows ODX, etc.
Data Protection & Service AvailabilityOne distinct advantage of using Synology as the storage server is the wide range of data protection functionality built into Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM): from system, data to VM-level with no additional licenses required.

For most use cases that require faster backup/restore time or to resume services quickly from a replica when the primary storage fails. Suitable for users who wish to keep versions but stillminimize the performance impact.
1 Supports VMware vSphere 5.0, 5.1, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 6.7. Microsoft Hyper-V support on Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019.2 Compared with the dual controller UC3200, Synology High Availability requires another identical set of Synology NAS (and HDDs/SSDs) acting as the passive server. This setup is able to provide all services DSM offers (such as file services and packages) instead of iSCSI service only.
Scheduling your snapshot and backup tasks
For optimal performance, scheduled backup tasks in Active Backup and Hyper Backup should be set to off-peak hours to minimize the performance impact on day-to-day activities. For Snapshot Replication, creating snapshots does not take up significant I/O resources. However, rotating snapshots may require higher I/O resources. Snapshot retention policy and scheduled deletion of older snapshots should be set to off-peak hours.

For backing up warm or cold data with high storage efficiency. Suitable for users who don't require fast backup/restoration or those who wish to back up to third party devices.
For mission-critical services that require real-time synchronization to minimize any potential data loss as well as automatic failover without human intervention.2
For VM-level protection. Suitable for users who need to restore individual VMs, restore them to a different hypervisor (e.g. from VMware to Hyper-V), or restore VMs directly on the storage system in case of a hypervisor failure.
