1 — GENERAL

The storage silo’s wall elements are made of 1,25 - 1,5mm thick galvanized steel plates. Metal pressing is made with a special machine, which gives a exact shape for the steel with a single run. Silo’s roof is assembled of sections which are attached from the top to the middle cone and to each other with roof lists. The roof is attached to the wall element with separate brackets.

Contents of delivery

• wall elements, one with a manhole• roof elements, one with a manhole• a top cone and a rain cover• wall spigot, cover pipe and cover hood for the drain screw• wall ladder (cage if needed) and roof ladder with railings• reinforcements and base parts (attaching to foundation)• sealant

In addition the delivery includes screws, nuts, washers, sealant extruder and a variety of fasteners in accordance with the delivery note.

Unpacking

Unpack the package if you can’t start the configuration straight away. The storing area has to be dry. Place the wall elements such that the air flows between them. This is to prevent the so called white rust from emergencing.

You don’t have to unpack the screw packages. Store the sealant to a warm place.

9 VERSION 201604 — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — ARSKAMETALLI LTD.

2 — FOUNDATION

The silo doesn’t always require a planning permission. Check the need for the permission from your local building authority. The silo requires strong and frost resistant foundation. Pay attention to the drainage in order to avoid moisture damage.

The silo is filled straight from the grain dryer (foundation close to the elevator) or using a conveyor. Fill the silo from the middle so that the load distributes evenly. Uneven load might cause damage to the storage silo. Draining is done by a screw conveyor (or equivalent) also from the middle of the silo.

The foundation is made according to the separate structure drawings. You can get the drawings for flat and cone based from the manufacturer.

3 — CONFIGURATION

Make sure you have enough of room during configuration. For example, installing the roof lists takes a lot of space. The ground should be smooth and supporting so the silo can be lowered safely.

Book enough workmen and tools. Pneumatic and battery powered tools save time and make the job smoother. Book two conical ended mounting hardware (centre punches) for each person. Sturdy racks will expedite the work and prevent damage.

We recommend to assemble silo using a crane to help the so-called ”up-to-down” method. This manual is made according to this method, because it’s the most common way of assembling. The crane should be big and extending enough so that the lifting and working to be safe.

Use butyl mass for sealing (included in delivery). Carefully done sealing ensures that the silo fills the requirements. Release the sealant extruder from pressure every time you stop sealing.

Element marking:• 1,25mm black color• 1,5mm yellow color

The wall elements are made of 1,25 – 1,5mm thick galvanized steel plates. The color is painted to inside the wall element, to the top edge. Wall element’s edge profile is thinner from the top edge, so it’s necessary to install the element to the correct direction. The color mark will be inside the silo, up and visible. See the table of the material thickness from page 22.

NOTE

Assemble the wall elements by inserting the higher element to the outside of the lower element as show in the picture on page 11. This is to avoid the rain water getting into the silo.

!

11 VERSION 201604 — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — ARSKAMETALLI LTD.

Start the work by supporting the top cone to the right height according to the picture on the right. Assemble two highest layers concentric with the top cone. Note the material thickness (see the table on page 22), assembly direction and remember the sealant.

Seal the vertical seams from the outside of the hole row. Seal the horizontal seams by extruding the sealant above the higher hole row (picture on bottom right).

Seal the seams from the outside of the vertical hole in the row. The seal horizontal joints by extruding the mass of the upper hole in the row above

Wall element vertical seam comes halfway of higher layer’s elements. Don’t tighten the bolts and nuts before all elements of the layer are in place.

4 — THE ROOF AND THE HIGHEST LAYERS

Start the configuration by assembling two highest element layers and the roof. At this point it’s not necessarily need a big crane, but it’s good for the safety to have a smaller crane to lift the parts.

12 ARSKAMETALLI LTD — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — VERSION 201604

Start assembling the roof by attaching the roof brackets to wall element’s top edge (shorter side against the element).

There’s three hole perimeters in the top cone with an indication of the diameter of the silo (Ø5,6 round holes - Ø6,4 square holes - Ø7,2 oval holes). Attach the roof section with M10x20 screws and nuts. Attach the lower edge of the section to the wall element using the brackets (note the lifting rings in the silos which are over 10 layers high). The sections are attached to each other with the roof list. Push the roof lists to place from below to up such that the lower edge is even with the roof section. Attach the roof lists to the section using self-drilling 4,3x13mm screws, about 10cm from the list’s top and lower edge.

Insert the roof element with a manhole even with the stairs and the other three elements vertically against each other. Put the other roof elements on place. Push thre roof lists on place and attach them to the roof sections. Tighten the bolts when all roof sections and lists are on place. Sweep the chips that are formed during the drilling from the galvanized plate to prevent corrosion from the roof.

13 VERSION 201604 — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — ARSKAMETALLI LTD.

Install the roof ladder and railing on place with self-drilling screws 4,3x13mm.

You can install the roof ladder railings, wall ladder and ladder cages after the silo has four element layers ready on place.

Install the ladder bracket to wall elements with M10x20 screws and nuts. The highest bracket pair is installed to the third fold from the top and the rest to wall element’s horizontal seam (page 15). Attach the handrails at the top end of the ladder element and attach the ladder on place such that the high ends of the handrails can be attached to the roof ladder.

Attach the highest back arch of the cage to ladder’s handrails. Install the remaining back arches and cages to wall ladder. The cage should extend to 2,2 - 3 meters height from the ground.

Rain cover

Install the rain cover on top of the top cone and attach it with a few drill screws.

5 — ROOF LADDERS, RAILINGS AND WALL LADDERS

14 ARSKAMETALLI LTD — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — VERSION 201604

Install the roof railings as shown in the picture. Attach the support pieces to roof lists by using the bonding pieces. Sweep the chips that are formed during the drilling from the galvanized plate to prevent corrosion from the roof.

15 VERSION 201604 — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — ARSKAMETALLI LTD.

16 ARSKAMETALLI LTD — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — VERSION 201604

6 — LIFTING

The silo can be lifted from the top cone or from the lifting rings which are attached to the roof and the wall elements. You can lift max. 10 layers high silos from the top cone.

When lifting from the top cone you need a Ø500mm disc which shares the load evenly to the perimeter of the cone. Thread the lifting chain inside from the fill hatch and attach it to the disc. When lifting with the lifting rings (4pcs) you must note that the chain angle between a single chain and a horizontal level is min. 60 degrees.

Install the lifting rings (picture in page 21) symmetrically to the junction of the roof section and the wall element.

7 — REMAINING LAYERS AND REINFORCEMENTS

Remaining wall element layers are installed one layer at a time by hunging with a crane. Tighten the screws and nuts after all wall elements of the layer have been installed to place. Remember the installation direction, material thickness and sealing. Install the ladder brackets during the work.

Install the reinforcements at the same time as the wall elements. The wall elements have been perforated for attaching the reinforcements. Plug the spare holes with M10x20 screws and nuts. Remember the washer. One reinforcement layer is a same height as two wall element layers. Check the reinforcement layer amount and material thickness from page 22. Extend the reinforcements if needed and attach a base support to lowest reinforcement.

Manhole

Install the manhole element according to the foundation type from below to 1th - 4th wall element layer. Rule is, that the grain surface must stay below the hatch lower edge after the silo has been discharged with an conveyor.

17 VERSION 201604 — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — ARSKAMETALLI LTD.

Install the inner hatch to inner surface and thread the rain cover to the outside.

Screw conveyor spigot

Install the screw conveyor wall spigot so that the conveyor is in 40 degrees angle relatively to the horizontal level. Installation height depends of the foundation type (flat base / cone base). Install the cover pipe after the silo has been attached to the foundation.

18 ARSKAMETALLI LTD — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — VERSION 201604

8 — ATTACHING TO FOUNDATION

Attach the silo to foundation from the reinforcement base supports with stud anchors or by welding (clamp plates on the foundation). Note that most of the grain load will be on top of the reinforcements. Thus, attaching should be done carefully.

Coat the bottom of the silo wall twice with bitumen. Do the grouting: to the outside in 45 degrees angle and to the inside horizontally (discharge screw) or in the same angle as the base.

19 VERSION 201604 — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — ARSKAMETALLI LTD.

9 — FINISHING

Attach the fill pipe (or conveyor) to silo’s fill spigot. Seal the connection carefully. Install the discharge conveyor’s cover pipe to conveyor wall spigot and support the pipe as seen on the picture below. Install the discharge conveyor and seal the connection using a cover.

20 ARSKAMETALLI LTD — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — VERSION 201604

10 — FILLING AND DRAINING

Fill the silo from the middle so that the load distributes evenly. Uneven load might cause damage to the storage silo. Draining is done by a screw conveyor (or equivalent) also from the middle of the silo.

21 VERSION 201604 — STORAGE SILO: ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS — ARSKAMETALLI LTD.

11 — LIFTING RINGS (OVER 10 LAYERS)

Lifting rings (4pcs) are used when you have to lift over 10 layers high silos. Lifting rings are put together of two parts, of a fastener and and a ring.

Installation

Install the lifting rings symmetrically to silo’s perimeter such that the lifting chains can be a lenght. Install the first lifting ring where the wall element’s vertical seam touches the center of the roof section. Install the fastener to the vertical seam with the highest screws. Attach the ring to the fastener using the middle screw of the roof section. Drill holes to the section to the outermost holes of the ring and attach the parts to each other with M10x30 screws and nuts.

Install the remaining ring-fastener pairs such that they come to the middle of the roof section. Drill holes to the wall elements for the fastener screws and to the roof sections the outermost holes of the rings.
