Learning

Learning and general advice for all:

� Keep crane access routes clear

� Use the designated lay down areas only, if they hinder

access then report this to your supervisor

� Keep clear of all lifting operations

� If you hear or see any crane warning alarms then report

this to your supervisor immediately

� Do not ask the crane driver directly to lift something. If

you need anything lifted then speak to your supervisor

or the B&V Appointed Person

� No lift can proceed without an approved Lifting Plan

Learning

Additional learning and guidance for lift team:

� No lifting without an approved Lifting Plan

� Lifting Plan to include all items to be lifted

� Know the weight of the load to be lifted

� Don’t forget to include the weight of lifting accessories

� No lift must proceed if the load exceeds 95% of the SWL

� Specific assessment is required for loads close to the limits

� Lay down areas to be planned

� Lifting Plans to be reviewed weekly and checked daily

� Any changes to be re-assessed by the AP

� Crane drivers and slinger/signallers to be briefed so they

fully understand their roles and responsibilities

Learning

Additional learning and guidance for crane operators:

� Do not do anyone any favours

� Do not lift anything that is not covered by in the Lifting Plan

� You must not proceed with a lifting operation if the load will

exceed 95% of the SWL

� You are not permitted to disable or ignore any warning alarm

� You are not permitted to use the ‘over-ride’ switch when the

crane is in operation

Crane requirements:

� Cranes on B&V sites are to be fitted with data loggers where

possible

� External safe load traffic lights to be fitted also

2010 amendments to our lifting procedure

� The old lifting procedure has now been simplified and incorporated into a Prosys flow chart (A451)

� The flow chart references and links to additional guidance documents which have been split into bite-sized chunks

� New Lifting Plans have been produced for specific items of plant

� There are new induction briefings for crane operators and slinger/signallers

Key elements to the changes

� New templates for Lifting Plans have been produced for specific items of plant:

� Mobile cranes

� Crawler cranes

� Tower cranes

� Telehandlers, forklifts

� Excavators

� Misc

New inductions/guidance notes

� New induction briefings for crane operators and slinger/signallers, adding to the others already in existence:

� Safe lifting instructions

� Safe operation of excavators

� Safe operation of dumpers

� Safe use of abrasive wheels

� Hand drill safety

� Guidance for banksmen

� Safe operation of telehandlers

� Make sure that if you carry out any of these tasks that you have been authorised and are familiar with the requirements set out in these guidance notes

� If you are involved with lifting operations then make

sure that you have been authorised and are familiar

with the requirements set out in the relevant guidance

note(s)

� All crane drivers; slinger/signallers to be briefed on the

new induction

� Managers and those managing lifting operations to

review the new Prosys lifting flow chart and associated

guidance

� Everyone must keep clear of all lifting operations

� Any queries then discuss with your supervisor or local
