Stone Oak Aesthetics - Beautification & ConservationThe Stone Oak Property Owners Association maintains approximately 78 city-owned right-of-ways and medians, approximately 51 acres total. In maintaining these areas, the Association is ensuring the unique character of the Stone Oak area for its residents and businesses. The Stone Oak Property Manager, and the Stone Oak Maintenance Supervisor, meet weekly with the grounds maintenance contractor and a certified arborist to discuss areas of concern, and any ideas to further enhance Stone oak while conserving water and funds.

Since inception of the Stone Oak Property Owners Association in 1986, Stone Oak has professionally maintained area landscape. At the beginning of the year 2000, most of the 51 acres of medians were landscaped with grass and native trees, along with selected areas of formal plantings, yet there was no tree trimming taking place, no plants on island noses, and no color. All landscaping was irrigated with sprays and rotors with no fertilizer or compost. In 2004, projects were initiated to add flowering perennials to many of the islands, with these new plantings still being irrigated with sprays. In 2007, a major irrigation project was undertaken to irrigate all plantings with a drip system. Efforts also began to reduce water use on the island turf grasses. In the last few years these and other water conservation activities have accelerated producing a 54% savings in water costs. Please also consider our other recent accomplishments:

Over 1,200 cubic yards of organic compost is laid on the Stone • Oak islands each year to enhance the health, fertilize, and protect the turf, as well as ensure the retention of water.

In 2010, the City of San Antonio was putting in new left turn lanes • on multiple islands. Rather than lose valuable landscaping, the Association paid a professional arborist to transplant 37 trees to other median locations, the largest of which was a 19 caliper inch Live Oak, which still thrives to this day.

In 2012, a new maintenance facility, with an office and a five • bay garage, was built on the property for storage of equipment. This also assists in more efficient organization of maintenance activities as a result of meetings, irrigation control and record keeping computer access, etc.

As part of the City of San Antonio canopy perservation effort, • over the past few years, the City has donated approximately 100 trees for planting on the Stone Oak islands, with an additional 39 trees donated in 2013.

Bubblers have been installed on all transplanted and any new • trees. In addition, mulch around large trees reduces turf, and ensures moisture remains around trunks.

Fountains maintained by the Association have been converted • to use recycled water.

An annual SAWS Irrigation Audit is completed each year • resulting in timely repairs of identified issues.

Drip irrigation has been installed on island noses to assist in • water conservation.

The Stone Oak POA Maintenance Team performs weekly water • meter readings to monitor water usage. This enables us to find and repair problems in a timely manner.

In December 2013, after researching meter usage over the • preceding year, the POA was able to eliminate five water meters. This resulted in a significant annual savings to the POA without

any negative impact on healthy turf and plants.

Also in December 2013, SAWS granted the POA a Commercial • Rebate of $3,300 for work done along Huebner Road including the elimination of turf as well as the installation of turf drip and drought tolerant plants, stone edging, river rock, and mulch.

Over three hundred sprays and rotors have been removed, and • rain sensors have been installed.

Along Stone Oak Parkway, islands have been reconfigured to • include more hardscape and drought tolerant plants.

Our grounds crew performs a weekly trash pickup routine to • ensure Stone Oak stays clean and presentable. Rocks are also picked up and saved for later use in landscaping projects.

During the first six months of 2014, three more islands were • configured with turf drip. The POA is also undergoing an irrigation upgrade with the installation of a more efficient two-wire system that will be able to be monitored and controlled remotely by the Maintenance staff.

Organic weed control, ant treatments, and tree trimming take • place on an annual basis to ensure health and longevity of the existing landscaping.

A certified arborist provides a bi-weekly tree and turf health • status report to the Aesthetics Committee to assist in maintaining the health of all island landscaping.

Stone Oak hosted a very successful A&M Agrilife Rain Barrel • Workshop in April 2014. Along with co-sponsor Trinity Glen Rose Water Conservation District, and the support of SAWS, residents were educated on water conservation and the use of Rain Barrel water. The event was so successful, another will take place in September. SAWS Water Conservation Representatives will be on site to educate residents on patioscapes, rain gauges, etc.

Another successful event meant to promote area beautification • was the Stone Oak Donation/Dumping Event held in May 2014. By providing residents a way to dispose of unwanted items, we are able to ensure no unsightly trash or dumping is left on our streets. Again, this event was so successful, another will be hosted on the same date as our Rain Barrel Workshop in September 2014. Republic Services representatives will be on site to educate residents about recycling, and other trash services provided to the community. The POA also hopes to arrange a hazardous waste disposal and shredding day in the future.

Also planned for 2014, to celebrate Arbor Day, the Association • has partnered with an arborist and the City of San Antonio to distribute over 100 trees to Stone Oak residents free of charge in hopes of encouraging a continued conservation effort among the community.

Stone Oak has worked hard to establish a relationship with SAWS and other water conservationists to help ensure Stone Oak is a model community of water conservation, and conservation education. We invite you to come visit us and observe the positive outcome of our team’s hard work and dedication- something that will continue and grow to ensure Stone Oak remains the unique community it is.

Paint the Parkway Pink5K Run/1 Mile Family Walk/Kid’s Run/Diaper Dash

Saturday, October 18, 2014We are preparing for the Third Annual

“Paint the Parkway Pink” 5K run/1 mile

family walk/kid’s run/diaper dash, to be held at the North Central

Baptist Hospital on Saturday, October 18, 2014. Referring to the

Stone Oak Parkway, the central thoroughfare for the Stone Oak

community, this special event is held to promote community

wellness and health awareness, and raise funds for breast cancer

research. The money raised from this event is donated to the

Susan G. Komen for breast cancer research through a special,

restricted grant set up previously by the Women in Medicine and

Law for the Cure®. This organization, Women in Medicine and

Law for the Cure®, led by Dr. Jean Holt and a group of female

physicians and lawyers, partnered with the North Central Baptist

Hospital and other groups, vendors, and sponsors in the Stone

Oak community, to hold the first race three years ago. It was a

resounding success and last year was even bigger and better. A

Military and Wounded Warrior category was added, sponsored

by Trinity Oaks, as well as the “Diaper Dash” sponsored by ABCD

Pediatrics. Additional founding sponsors included the Baptist

Breast Cancer, Sonterra Ophthalmology, Alamo KidSports, Liz

Braden Realtor and Character Cafe. Reagan High School of the

North East Independent School District provided space for the

various runs and walk on its campus.

Itza Gutierrez, Spurs Arena Atmosphere reporter, was the event

moderator, and the Stars’ Silver Fox joined the children for the

kids’ fun run and scooted the crawlers over the finish line.

We are anticipating over 1000 runners, walkers, and children

for this third “Paint the Parkway Pink” event. Dr. Holt wants

to acknowledge the event planning committee, Mrs. Kathy

Friedrickson from the Baptist Breast Center, Mrs. Jennifer

Meachum, director of employee wellness for the North Central

Baptist Hospital, Dr. Andrea Duke, Jennifer Thompson, Liz Braden

and Diane Heiman. New this year will be a Fit Kids Challenge: a

month long program to promote health and wellness for the area

youngsters sponsored by Velocity Sport Performance.

All in the Stone Oak community are invited to participate. We

send a special thanks to the neighborhoods “hosting” the run:

Stone Creek, Hills of Stone Oak, Glen of Stone Oak, Las Lomas,

and Champion Springs.

One hundred percent of every dollar raised, whether from

a runner, sponsor or vendor will go directly to research to

Getting the Most Out of Farmers Markets and

Seasonal Produce(BPT) - Warm weather months bring an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, and for those who enjoy buying local, farmers markets are popular destinations. Produce choices available at farmers markets are now reaching their peak. So how can you make the most of this seasonal bounty?

Chef Daniel Reyes, culinary faculty member at The Art Institute of California - Inland Empire, a campus of Argosy University, believes that it’s important to know the difference between buzz words common at markets. “If you have questions about how farmers do something, they are more than happy to talk to you and educate you about sustainable and organic farming,” he says.

Reyes explains that while some produce may look unfamiliar, a good market salesperson will provide tips on how to use the items. Farmers markets are not just great places to buy, they’re also great places to learn new culinary techniques and food pairings.

Another tip? Shop early - that’s when chefs at are the markets. “Chefs are usually there early in the morning. See what they are buying,” says Reyes. And remember to bring bags to carry your items home - cooler bags are especially helpful when you’re buying delicate goods such as locally made cheeses, eggs or meats.
