The Absolute in Green Lighting Solutions Stonco Solar 101

description

Stonco is uniting the high efficiency of LED lighting fixtures with renewable solar panel power systems. Combining these two remarkable technologies reduces installation cost and provides free lighting for the life of the system. Stonco’s solar powered LEDfixtures make it affordable to install fixtures where an electrical supply is not readily available or too costly to connect. Outdoor LED luminaires enhance site appearance and improve pedestrian safety.

How Does Solar Work?

A Basic Solar Lighting System

Page 3: Stonco Solar Lighting

It’s All About the Sun The sun provides energy source to the solar panel Solar panels convert the sun’s energy into electricity Battery is charged during the day by direct-current (DC) from the solar panel A light source is powered by the battery each night The controller/driver charges the battery and avoids overcharging The controller/driver detects dusk and dawn, switch the light on or off as needed

Solarized Charge Controller/Driver

Stonco Solar 101Solar-Powered LED Lighting Solutions

Designed to regulate power to and from the battery - Regulates the battery charge - Prevents the battery from over-charging - Manages the rate of charge within acceptable rangeManages the power coming from the battery to the light - Controls when light comes on and goes off - Prevents the battery from running below safe levels

The Stonco “Solarize” Approach

Stonco Solar 101Solar-Powered LED Lighting Solutions

Use the worst case to set your panel & battery size Longest night (longest operation) & shortest day (lowest insolation) occur in January in the Northern Hemisphere The system must operate through several weeks of these conditions The balance of the year there is plenty of overheadDesign it right and build it right leads to happy customers Works every night Safety factors are used for safety, not standard operation Will survive long nights in winterAllow for depreciation Solar panels lose some efficacy over time Panels depreciate approximately 10% in 10 years

Solar Lighting Glossary

Stonco Solar 101Solar-Powered LED Lighting Solutions

Depth of Discharge:What % of the total battery energy the system consumes per night

Amp Hours (Ah): Maximum amount of stored energy in a battery

Operating Mode:How the light is delivered (Dusk to Dawn, Split Night, Split Night with Dimming)

Effective Running Time (ERT):Number of hours the light is on at night

Solar Lighting Glossary

Stonco Solar 101Solar-Powered LED Lighting Solutions

Insolation: Intensity of average daily sunlight in an area –in sun hours

NREL & NASA Data Sets:National Renewable Energy Laboratory and National Aeronautics & Space Administration collect and update data sets on insolation and weather data at a location

Watts (W): Measurement of electrical power

Backup: Number of nights the system will run with no solar charging
