The “S.O.S.” Summit Conference:Conceptualization
Wallach (2004) “Even a brief visit to a mental health facility canimprove attitudes beyond classroom education.”
Provide an opportunity for interaction between students andconsumer survivors, which is empirically recognized as the mostpowerful model of learning (Angermeyer & Matchsinger, 1996;Corrigan et al., 2001).
Corrigan et al. (2005) found adolescents were one of the besttargets for anti-stigma campaigns, since it is during thisdevelopmental period that foundations are laid for adult attitudesand beliefs, which if positive, could prevent stigmatizing behaviour inthe future
Increase the knowledge of mental illness and decrease theassociated stigma, because research shows that decreasing stigmareduces attitudes and behaviours that might be barriers to careseeking (Corrigan, 2004).

What can you do about it? 34
• In general, however, we know that there is no quickfix and no single answer. Instead, many authorssuggest a three-pronged approach:
– Education (to dispel commonly held mythsabout mental illness)
– Protest (to suppress discriminatory attitudesand challenge commonly held stigmatizingimages)
– Contact (to put a human face on mental illness– whether that of celebrities or of the not-sofamous

Speaker Testimonial
“Speaking for TAMI has given me the confidence I need to reach out andtry to erase the stigma attached to mental illness. The students I talk tohave become like a second family. Their intelligent questions havetaught me how much they are willing to learn, and I’ve become a betterperson for talking to them.”Ivor Vasconcellos, TAMI Speaker, 7 years
Research hasalso shownevidence of theempoweringeffect that tellingone’s story andinteractingwith programparticipants, can have onconsumers(Wood & Wahl,2006).
