“We are committed to be the best. With the full power of all that weare, we will go where there is no path and blaze a new trail. Our

positive attitude and commitment to quality will be a powerful forcethat can not be stopped.”

Welcome to the 101st National Western Stock Show! The National Western Stock Show is like a modern day roundup- breeders from across the US andCanada convene on one location for a 14 day period. In the old days, the prize stock were roundedup and the crew set out to blaze new trails. The same is true today and as many of you load the trailerwith enough food to feed half of the yards on any given day, one thing remains a constant…qualitymatters. That is the reason we make the effort to head to Denver because in our hearts and our minds,we believe we have what it takes to be considered worthy of the National Western Stock Show status.

The Simmental breeders involved in The One-Vol. X1V, National Western Simmental Sale areindividuals that are passionate about this breed. They have demonstrated dedication and have madethe commitment to be part of this modern trail drive that has the Simmental breed in the spotlight. The sale offering covers all spectrums of the beef business from the donors that proudly carry theirown history books including impressive LTE (Life Time Earnings), bred females ready to write theirown chapters, open heifers that have the “Bet On Me” look and stout herd sires that are ready toprove they ARE the next generation!

The Denver Simmental excitement includes the Annual ASA meetings, female pen show, andChairman’s reception, the always exciting Bull Pen show including Power Bull, The One Vol. XIVSale and the Jr. & Open Show on the Hill. The National Western Simmental Show on the hill is ourNational Show for this year which will once again showcase an outstanding set of cattle.

Special thanks to the CSA board for the countless hours they put into the Simmental events for all ofus. The ASA & Register staff for the extra hours to assist the breeders, Bill Angel and his staff forthe hospitality they extend during the stock show, Jim Birdwell, our consultants and ring staff foryour dedication to be part of this sale each year. A special thank you to the breeders so dedicated tothis breed and to making Denver the “Grand-daddy of all roundups!” It is our privilege to be yourmarketing partner!

Join us in Denver…. It is a Roundup to remember!

“Pick of the Herd” to benefit theASA/AJSA Foundation!

The Simmental business has been very good to the Butcher family at Gateway Simmental. Our family has been committed to this great breed of cattle since the first Simmental crosscalves were born here in the spring of 1969. Our whole philosophy and experience has beenbuilt around this breed and association. Emmet Butcher based a significant amount of his lifearound working to make Simmental an American success story. He liked nothing more thanbrainstorming and debating his vision of what would make the breed better. He spent twodifferent tenures as a member of the ASA board of directors. He left our ranch in a position tobe handed over to the next generation with his passing in the spring of 2003. Now it ismanaged and operated by his widow Darlene and sons Jim and Tom. Hopefully, down theroad we will be fortunate to incorporate the next generation.

As in most businesses, change is a given and success is a function of how we adapt and change with it. Wehave been fortunate to be able stay ahead of the curve and still be in business after 33 years of the good and badtimes.

We are finishing up the best year Gateway Simmental has ever had. We sold 220 bulls for just under $3500a head and sold 250 head of breeding females private treaty. Our herd has grown to 700+ cows that calve andwe are breeding around 1100 head total per year. Currently we are living through a time when the demandcurve for Simmental genetics is seriously shifting to the right. We have patiently been doing our homework andwaiting a long time for underlying demand growth to be coming from the rancher and feedlot levels. From acycle standpoint, we are entering another era of good times in this breed and it is up to us as breeders and anassociation to sustain it as long as possible. Our hats go off to all of you that have made this trend a reality.

The Gateway program is totally focused on building genetics that offer profitability to the end users. Wehave a breed that has a lot to offer from both the maternal and terminal aspects. It is very important for us tooffer genetics that will improve many traits and balance both the production and terminal traits. We may begreedy, but believe through selection we can multiply cattle that excel in both aspects. We work really hard tolet our cattle perform to their ability in large contemporary groups. This way we can find the REAL cream andit will rise to the top. We feed and carcass test some of our sire identified cattle through the feeding phase eachyear. We sell them on value based grids finding their true value in the beef. Many of those cattle have turnedheads among feedlot owners and will create more demand for Simmental based genetics. Another new item theassociation has implemented that can have a huge impact over time in simplifying decisions among cattlemen isthe API and TI indexes. They will also serve as a means of keeping us as breeders honest and not chasingsingle traits.

With all that said, we think that you can support the foundation and find a female in our heifer calves thatcan move your program forward. In order for you to make the best decision in getting the right heifer, wewould advise waiting until after July 20th, 2007 to make your selection. The heifers will be bred andultrasounded for pregnancy and calf sex.

It is without hesitation that I saythat SOSF Ebonys Joy is no doubt the most influential dollar producer and image builder thateither Janssen Farms or Double S have ever had the privilege to own. Joy’s track record of high selling progeny is unprecedented and undeniably the most impressive of our generation. So farEbonys Joy has produced 12 daughters that have sold at public auction for a total of $209,500 foran astonishing average of $17,458 per heifer. Joy’s embryos, when offered for sale, havecommanded as high as $2000 per egg! Her daughters and sons have proven that they can win inthe show ring, but more importantly they win in the pasture as awesome production cattle, asevidenced by the great 479P, known as Hope, who has produced a top notch Herd Sire/A.I. I’ve been asked a million times, what is a cow likethis worth? All I can do is help with the math... she is averaging over $100,000 per year in totalproduction from sales of sons, daughters, embryos and pregnancies. Joy averages over 24freezable embryos per flush even at $1,500 per embryo, you do the math. Joy is due to calve thefirst week of January and will be ready to crank out the eggs. This is truly a rare opportunity. We believe that Love Me Dont U is a cow that we can build a whole herd around. That iswhy, with our good friends at Southern Comfort Simmentals, we recently paid $40,000 for this once in a life time female. This Black Joker/Ebony Antoinette daughter was Reserve Grand Champion Female at both Louisville and Denver as well asa Reserve Division win in Kansas City in 2003. She was Reserve Show Heifer of the Year that year. More importantly, shehas developed into an impressive and elite donor cow.
