THE HEALTH & SAFETY (SAFETY SIGNS AND SIGNALS REGULATIONS) 1996As an employer you are required to conform fully with the provisions of these regulations. Guidance is given here and throughout the catalogue in respect of: Risk assessment Use of pictorial symbols General health and safety signs Fire/emergency escape signs Positioning of signs Marking of hazardous storage areas and obstacles Dangerous locations Identification of pipelines

A red circular band with diagonal cross bar on a white background, the symbol within the circle to be black denoting a safety sign that indicates that a certain behaviour is prohibited.

A yellow triangle with black border and symbol within the yellow area denoting a safety sign that gives warning of a hazard.

A blue circle with white symbol denoting a sign that indicates that a specific course of action must be taken.

A red rectangle or square with symbol in white denoting a safety sign that indicates the location of fire fighting equipment.

A green rectangle or square with symbol or text in white denoting a safety sign providing information about safe conditions.


LEGISLATION AND GUIDANCE

As you can see from the examples below, some of the design changes are minor, whereas some have a more obvious difference.

BS EN ISO 7010In 2011, ISO 7010 was adopted as a British standard and replaced BS 5499-5: 2002 as the UK standard for safety signs. This change has seen safety signs in the workplace move away from being an International standard (essentially a recommendation on best practice), to a European norm (meaning the contents of the standard must be written into UK and EU Law). ISO 7010 has been developed to provide a consistency in design across the EU. We have phased in the new designs and you may notice some design changes to the symbols whereas others will look virtually unchanged.

The Health and Safety Sign Association executive committee has agreed that all members will adopt the graphical symbol designs published within ISO 7010 and so, as a member of the HSSA, Stocksigns endorses the change to the new symbols. Health and safety signs that conform to the BS 5499 series of Standards and have yet to be adopted by the ISO standards will still be available from Stocksigns. To show our commitment to the principles of best practise, we have highlighted all compliant products in this catalogue with the quality assured HSSA logo shown here.

The majority of the symbols have been adopted by ISO and as such have now been encompassed into UK safety legislation.

1. In the event of fire it is the first duty of all concerned to prevent injury or loss of life.

2. For this purpose, you should make certain that you are familiar with all the means of escape in case of fire. Since there may be an opportunity, in the event of a fire, for you to attack it with the nearest fire extinguisheror hose reel, you should also be familiar with how to use them.

3. IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE OR one is reported to you, you should -

SOUND THE ALARM

4. The Principal or the authorised deputy is responsible for ensuring that the Fire Brigade is called immediately on the sounding, of the fire alarm.

5. Immediately after the fire alarm has been sounded, you should -

.1 see that any doors immediately surrounding the fire situation are closed, and

.2 escort persons from the area of the incident, in accordance with the detailed fire drill procedure, ensuring that all doors through which you pass are closed after you, and

.3 when the persons arrive at the assembly point, which is call the roll and notify the Principal at once of the result (e.g. all persons presentor one missing, and the name and likely location, as the case may be).

1. Call Fire Brigade immediately.

2. Proceed to nearest available exit.

3. Do not return to your vehicle.

In situations of emergency evacuation, especially when confronted by power failure, a way guidance system using photoluminescent tapes, signs and markers will help to indicate clearly defined escape routes, saving critical time for the evacuation of the building.

BS 5266-6: 1999, is a Code of Practice for non-electrical low mounted way guidance marking using a photoluminescent system. It recommends how to plan, design, install and maintain the system when used in conjunction with powered emergency lighting. The use of this standard, combined with BS ISO 16069:2004, Graphical symbols-Safety signs - Safety way guidance systems and BS 5499-4: 2000, Code of Practice for escape route signs, gives the answers to most questions that could be asked from those contemplating installing a photoluminescent way guidance system.

The 1st July 2007 saw the implementation of a total smoking ban in all enclosed public places, work places and certain vehicles in the UK. Stocksigns has a wide range of No Smoking signs, to help you comply with these needs. The smoke free legislation means that it is an offence not to display the appropriate No smoking signs, resulting in fines of up to 1000. It will also be an offence for managers of smoke free premises to permit others to smoke within the premises, carrying a fine of up to 2500.
