Transcript of Stockholm (sweden) sutainable transport
Swedish APPROACH
“lots of small things”
Overall Strategy
Objectives • Access
• Quality Service
• Safety
• A Good
Environment
• Sound Economic
Development
Some features
Multimodal transportation
corridor.
transit work through: efficient
service at reduced subsidy.
customer orientation in transit
by using surveys to identify
traveler preferences
4 ways to reduce oil dependency and
fossil CO2 from transportation!
Curb the uncontrolled growth of
transport
Increase energy efficiency
Increase the use of biofuels
Public Transportation
Swedish examples of sustainable
development and sustainable
transport include the following:
• Coordinating land use and
transportation in redeveloping and
preserving town centers
• building new towns at walk able densities
near transit.
• Designing, building, and reconstructing
transport facilities to reduce negative
impacts, e.g., putting highways
underground in the city and implementing
traffic calming.
• Experimenting with and implementing
new automotive technologies, including
alternate fuels, hybrid and alt-fuel buses
and government fleet vehicles, etc.
.
o Developing a sustainable
freight transport strategy
o improving rail freight; and
applying advanced logistics
to make freight operations
more efficient.
o Emphasizing health and
safety in transportation,
including a zero deaths
safety (grade separation,
traffic calming, in-vehicle
protection, and public
education)
• Targets for SL renewables • Trains
• SL shall only use electricity from
renewable sources (wind, hydro,
biomass)
• Buses
• 25 % renewables2006
• 50 % 2011
• 100 % 2025
For buses: Good and readily available alternatives
BIOGAS = clean burning /
benign emissions
Limited supply
Suitable for local traffic
It works!
ETHANOL = Volume and
infrastructure
Liquid – simple
infrastructure
Large volumes available
(internationally)
It works!
The worlds largest
ethanol fleet
• Biogas is a part of the Climate change solution
• Biogas is a renewable fuel
• natural degradable processes of waste products
• from households, restaurants and sewage treatment plants
• similar to natural gas CNG but renewable
• locally produced
Environmental enrichment, net
gain in Stockholm using
ethanol,biogas and RME in
buses
All inner city bus lines run on
renewables (250 buses)
• A total of 450 ethanol and 129
biogas buses in operation at
present
• Reduced diesel use by ca 18
million litres / year
• Reduced fossil CO2 by approx.
60 000 tonnes / year
• Reduced PM and NOx
