We aim to include as many local events and news items as possible – so if you have a bric-a-brac sale; fete; class or exhibition etc. that you would like advertised for free in our magazine, please contact us at the earliest opportunity and we will include it in our News and Events section.

Don't forget if you would like to read the magazines online simply visit the site and click on 'Latest Issue' in the menu bar . If you saw something in a previous issue and need to find it then click on 'Old Issues' tab in the menu bar.

As we look toward the year ahead we are thinking of ways to improve your local magazine. We are keen to expand our readership yet further. Recent price increases in the printing industry have hampered our progress but we are sure that this year we will be able to reach readers in the Candover Valley.

The Garden

to be perfectly frank I have never quite known what to do in the garden in

February. The new year’s surge of positivity and planning has passed, the garden still looks drab and brown in its winter look and the enticing, over colourful seed catalogues that arrive with a thud on the mat only add to the gloom. I know I should probably do something useful, like dig over the vegetable plot, but I am not really in the frame of mind to give our cats a spiffing new litter tray. Plus it would mean unearthing my wellies from the pile of collected gubbins under the stairs and finding some warm ‘gardening clothes’ that I know full well are going to get

soaked through as I do battle with the mountain of leaves nicely sagging on the netting frame that I neglected to take down.

February is such an ‘inbetween’ month in the garden, a ‘not quite yet’ month. I stare out of the window searching for the smallest hint of green, something; anything. Just the tip of a crocus, a slight of hellebore, a whiff of snowdrop, would give me hope and renew my gardening vigour. I resign myself to the fact that the slugs have probably feasted on all our spring bulbs, again. I idly revisit the to-do lists with a sigh and a cup of tea. Roll on march when I can trawl the seed catalogues with real interest, make excuses to pop to the garden centre and have a proper day out in the garden that actually involves a spade and secateurs, followed by a sherry and a warming roast dinner. Perhaps I need a walk up to Brandy mount House on one of their open days to see the national snowdrop collection and revive my gardening gusto. And yes, I hear you tut tutting, I really do need to get my snowdrops in before I’ve missed it for another year!AWB

Celebrating Success at King’s Somborne

Happy New year to you all. We have started the new year raring to go and already new

topics are underway, exciting trips are planned to various places in and around Hampshire and further afield as well as a busy School calendar for the term.

It is important during busy weeks that the small things are not forgotten; the good attitudes to learning, supporting and caring for others or a simple please and thank you. Being respectful underpins all our school values – how can you work collaboratively or independently if you don’t respect others or yourself? We take time each week to celebrate

UNIQUE, interactive, educational storybook for children, 7-10 years.

Hospice. Complete set of three books £20. Individual parts £8.99. NEW VIDEO and all purchase details on www.pud-swan.org or contact: [email protected] or

'Hello Pud-Swan' A New Book by Bryan Beggs

Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Hampshire, as reported last

month, has benefitted to the tune of £3000 from the newly published storybook for children by Andover author Bryan Beggs. ‘Hello Pud-Swan’ [a three-part set] is a story with a difference, which aims to capture the imagination of readers aged from 7 – 10 years, in an INtERACtIVE and

EDuCAtIONAL way. topics of geographical, historical, scientific, and cultural interest are woven into the storyline, as are the 7, 8 and 9 times mathematical tables!

All information about these books and where they can be bought can be found on the books’ own website www.pud-swan.org and now the first 17 pages are available to read on Google Books.

children who do all of these things by awarding ‘Special mentions’.

Throughout the week, children can nominate each other, with a reason for the nomination, and two are selected from each class to receive a special mention during celebration assembly. Special mentions are received for a wide variety of reasons, including those linked to the weekly challenge. Some recent reasons have been; showing initiative in their learning, being kind and caring towards

the younger children, having a resilient attitude even if things don’t go right first time… the list goes on.

Once a term though, we recognise an outstanding achievement; an ‘Inspiration trophy’ award. This is chosen by staff and awarded to someone who has made a real difference to people outside their class and is a genuine inspiration to others. The award was started by a past colleague and continues to be

something children strive to achieve each term. It has been awarded to people for being a ‘kind, patient and consistent friend’, ‘leading by example in everything they do in a quiet, unassuming way’ and, most recently for ‘being mature, level headed and taking an active part in school life.’ I wonder who will be awarded the Inspiration trophy next at Easter?

Securing the Future of Environmental Services in the Southern test Valley

A £2million capital investment in land at Romsey has been confirmed today by

the Borough Council. The plan is to use the newly-bought site as the permanent home for Southern test Valley’s environmental services; providing a base for staff, waste collection vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment. Councillor Peter Boulton, Environmental Portfolio Holder for test Valley says: “Environmental Services for residents in Southern

test Valley are currently provided from a rented site, which has some operational limitations. We have been searching for a new site for several years that can provide a permanent secure base and meet the operational needs for these essential services. This was a rare opportunity for the Council to acquire a suitable new freehold site in the area which is already in commercial use. Councillor Peter Giddings, test Valley’s Economic Portfolio Holder, says: “We thought very carefully before

making this decision in the current economic climate. However, the argument to make an investment in land makes complete sense. By owning the land outright the site will be a financial asset for the people of test Valley and, because we won’t need to rent land elsewhere, ongoing costs can be managed much more effectively. The Council will have to apply for planning permission

for the site. Proposals are currently being finalised and the Council expects to submit an application very soon. There will be opportunities for local people to get involved in the planning process and to comment on the plans when they are ready.

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

01962 776545Domestic plumbing

I’m reminded of a quotation of Winston Churchill, which I’m sure some readers will remember, when he said

on one occasion about Russia...’ it is a riddle wrapped up in a mystery, inside an enigma’... I feel the same remarks could be said about St. Valentine!

There appears to be at least three possible candidates for the naming of our present day celebrations. The name Valentino comes from the Latin ‘valens’ meaning ‘worthy or strong’, and so you can imagine it might be a popular name, but of the three known saints called Valentine martyred during the early Roman Empire for their Christian faith, I think one stands out as ‘most likely’. He died on 14th February sometime between AD 269 and AD 273. He was arrested for illegally marrying Christian couples in Rome; it is said that the Roman Emperor Claudius II initially took a liking to his prisoner, but

when Valentine tried to convert him to Christianity he ordered him to be put to death. The place of his execution was just outside the Flaminian Gate [the starting point of the Via Flaminia which was the road from Rome to Rimini]. The site of the Flaminian Gate is now occupied by the edifice of the ‘Gate of the People’ or Porta del Populo built in 1475, which leads into the Piazza del Populo... worth a visit if you go to Rome and you are romantically inclined. Strangely enough it is thought that many of the legends associated with St. Valentine, particularly that of ‘romantic love’ were invented in England during the 14th Century when the perceived virtues of chivalry were highly honoured and desired. Geoffrey Chaucer [Canterbury tales etc.] was a story-teller of note and some believe he was partly to ‘blame’. A church was founded in AD 340 on or near the site of St.

St.Valentine... Who was he?

Valentine’s execution, known as the ‘church of St. Valentine outside the city gate’ and relics of the saint were said to be interred there, but as with many other saints, relics have been claimed by, or distributed to, many other churches as the years have gone by. There is a coffin in the Birmingham Oratory given to Cardinal Newman in 1847 by Pope Pius IX ostensibly containing relics of St Valentine and there are other similar relics venerated in such cities as Dublin, Vienna and Glasgow... and the list goes on. St Valentine’s Day as we know it throughout North America and Europe is of course February 14th and is also the ‘name day’ chosen by the Greek Orthodox Church for all persons called either Valentinos or Valentina. tokens of love and affection given on this day celebrating friendship, romantic love and marriage, have evolved into an ‘annual routine’, but are no less poignant for all that. Echoes of the roman festival of Lupercalia [fertility and purity] celebrated around the middle of the month of February, reverberate down the ages. ‘Gifts of Love’ can be written in the landscape... the hanging gardens of Babylon were a love gift; the taj mahal in India was built in memory of a much-loved wife. In England the ‘Crosses of Queen Eleanor’ were erected between 1291 and 1294 to the memory of the wife of Edward

I, wherever her body rested on its way from Lincoln to London, of which it is possible that the ‘Chere Reine [Charing] Cross is most well known? Lovers everywhere somehow find ways to express their emotions to the world... it might be in schoolroom chalk on a pavement, ‘SuE 4 ROy’, or in more excellent fashion through poetry; a favourite of mine is Sonnet No. 116 by William Shakespeare, of which I will tempt you with the first few lines...

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments. Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds

Or bends with the remover to remove;

O, no! it is the ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken

It is the star to every wandering bark...

I’m sure you will all have your special memories of this day, but over the years however much the story has been embellished, I think we do well to recall its origin in being a desire to promote Christian marriage, love and friendship, for which cause a young man called Valentine was prepared to die.

Rant: 'to talk in a loud and excited way', is one dictionary’s definition. Some would say I do that

about most things. Whilst a rant may well be a boisterous stream of cathartic consciousness it is also, invariably, ill-informed - just a way of venting our spleens when angry about something without alluding to anything factual.

Recycling, or more specifically for the moment, the green wheelie bin, is a particular favourite rant of mine.... oh don’t get me started …..

It seems to me to be classic governmental / local authority

behaviour to turn the consumables which they bounteously bestow upon us into the very stick with which to beat us. The car is a classic example; through marketing and actual requirement we are actively encouraged to purchase the conveyance of our dreams, reassured that it will be as eco-friendly has mechanically possible; yet the minute we place our foot on the accelerator we become the whipping boy for all the eco-evils of the world, and are taxed accordingly whether via fuel or road tax, for the use of our deteriorating roads. The guilt we are made to feel when using our car on short journeys is

Recycling Rant

tangible. The four horsemen of the apocalypse have a better carbon footprint, given their mode of transport.

Forgive me, I’m ranting. Ah yes, the green bin.

you see, I understand that we can now recycle a vast percentage of things, from batteries and mobile phones to clothes, glass, vegetation of all types, paper, cardboard - the list is endless. There’s a thriving second-hand market, whether it be through charity shops, car boots or e-bay. So why do I rant about the bin? Plastic! There are an equal number of items that may not be placed in the bin as there are that are deemed acceptable, the vast majority of which are plastic.

Now I’m an average bod, and whilst I could do better, recycling has become a normal part of life - so when I sort the household rubbish for its respective bins, I reckon the vast majority of it should be easily recyclable.

Not so, as my husband kindly points out, as he re-sorts it all. No cartons of the 'tetra' variety, no yoghurt pots, and no plastic trays of any kind; on and on it goes. Now surely there is a place in eco-heaven where these things can be disposed of safely? All I need do is seek it out, be proactive about it all.

But alas, I’m ranting about the amount of money the local authority has spent on issuing us all with a green wheelie bin that you can’t put anything in. (Remember, I’m mid-rant now, the time when the most illogical utterances are likely.)

“What’s the point of it all, let's pop it all in landfill and be done with it.” Well, I’m going to keep on putting everything in the green bin until tHEy do something about it!

Post rant as I breathe into a recycled brown paper bag: it occurs to me that there is no ‘tHEy’ - there is only ‘I’.It’s not the fault of the local authority, nor even that of the government: for, though it pains me to admit it, they are doing their best. We are fortunate to be able to recycle not only in our own back yards, but at local authority ‘dumps’ and, rather ironically, at the supermarket.

Ironic because ‘they’ don’t have the power - ‘I’ do. ‘They' are not bestowing consumables upon me - I’m buying them: all ‘I’ need to do is to stop buying those things which are packaged in such a way that it just doesn’t suit my lovely green bin. So that’s easy then.

What do you think ? Gill Grant

Pour the cream into a small pan and bring to the boil. Cut the vanilla pod in half

and scrape the inside into the cream.

In the mean time on a chopping board, chop the chocolate into very small pieces. When the cream comes to the boil, remove from the heat and leave cool for a minute.

Put the chocolate into a mixing bowl and slowly pour the hot cream over it, sieving it to remove the fine vanilla seeds. Then with a whisk mix slowly making a circle from the inside toward the outside until well mixed. Next add two soup spoons of whisky, mix very well and slowly. Leave to cool in a cold place but NOt in a fridge, until firm.

In a pot bring some water to near boiling point, place the mixing bowl over it (bain marie) let the mixture get lukewarm and gently mix with the whisk a second time until you obtain a creamy mixture, but not too soft.

With a piping bag form small balls of mixture on greaseproof paper, or use a teaspoon to scoop some chocolate and form a ball in the palm of your hand. Let the truffles become hard for at least one hour in a refrigerator.

Whilst the truffles are hardening chop more chocolate, place it into a bain marie and let it almost melt. Pour the cocoa powder onto a plate or small tray. take the very firm truffles from the fridge, plunge one by one in the melted chocolate using a fork

and roll in the cocoa powder. take the covered truffles, place into a sieve and shake to remove any excess cocoa powder, when the excess has been removed place the truffles into the fridge until they are ready to be eaten.

to make the best truffes, the layer of chocolate muSt be very thin, like the cocoa layer. If you are left with too much mixture then let it harden in a plastic container and keep it in the fridge until the next time you want to make a round of truffes.

Enjoy!Germain

Hampshire Mum

It’s an epidemic. Friends are being fifty all over the place. There’s no stopping the relentless march of

time it would seem; the ‘big five O’ is upon us!

two chums hit the half century just before Christmas and then, in early January, it was the turn of the Husband to cross the great divide - the line, once crossed, when people feel obliged to tell you that it’s ‘all downhill from here’.

We threw a party in his honour, and he journeyed blithely to our market town’s local golf club the next day to play with his new sticks, clubs or whatever, that I had bought him. Apart from admitting that his new golf trolley ‘made life easier… now,’ he’s taken the whole fifty thing rather well.

Having had two ‘mid-life crises’ on previous landmark birthdays, I was predicting something of cataclysmic proportions to coincide with his half century… but no. Having jettisoned the three litre Capri

Ghia and ‘hot hatchback’ long ago, he eventually settled for the trusty Renault. The birth of Stars I and II sent him into a flat spin, resulting in the purchase of two large motorbikes and all the necessary gear, complete with knee ‘sliders’:

“It’s for when you get your knee down, Sandra, love.” Not to be confused with getting one’s leg over presumably? Anyhow, much like the venerable toad of Wind in the Willows, he soon tired of speed and, indeed, his black leathers. Apparently they chafe horribly in hot weather.

So now he’s seriously into fitness, running and biking of the ‘mountain’ variety. He can often be found frolicking through local woods on his bike with like-minded chums returning home covered in mud and happy as Larry. He completed the Great South Run in an excellent time despite his calf muscle giving way at the two kilometre mark, and the Alresford 10K is but a walk in the park for him.

So far the Husband has lost a stone in weight, and his nothing short of a hunk in his new 32 inch waist jeans. Apart from a slight hint of depression the day before his birthday, he has embraced being fifty and is moving forward with renewed vim and vigour: and therein lies the problem.

How am I to compete? The last thing our superhero wants is an overweight, unfit frump by his side. I could be superseded by a nubile blonde any minute!

What chance do I stand? Older men can always find younger, attractive women. I’m no ‘cougar’- more like something the cat dragged in. I don’t actually hit the ‘big five O’ until the summer, but for the past two years when I’ve been telling people I’m “very nearly fifty,” they have politely said “Really? No way!” - but in reality were probably thinking, “God, I thought she was older than that!”

As the few remaining female hormones gasp their last, it would appear that my narcissistic gene has kicked in, but too late, as, unlike Narcissus, I loathe my own reflection. I pause in front of the mirror pulling sagging facial flesh this way and that, pondering the benefits of a nip and tuck.

Covetousness has also reared its ugly head: how I envy younger friends whose breasts still sit just below their chins and whose bottoms resemble peaches. my Bassett- hound -like jowls are in danger of meeting my chest. I thank god for scarves and the polo neck, as my bum drags along behind me, counter-balanced only by the ‘middle aged spread’ that appeared overnight. And as for a pelvic floor, well mine’s in possession of a deep pile carpet, I’m sure.

Clothes are now a depressing prospect: too old for monsoon, too fat and too old for Jigsaw, while Eastex and Scholl suddenly appear comfy! Thanks to image distortion, my current look is ‘mutton dressed as lamb,’ which I do rather well.

If female, fifty and over a size 10, one becomes invisible to half the population and the only time a man will take your hand now is to help you cross the road.

What’s this? Depression looming? Am I about to have a mid lifer of my own? All the signs are there - a desire for a sports car, a genuine belief that 80’s music was fabulous (sorry, 70’s music doesn’t count), being inexplicably drawn to my son’s tennis coach and having a healthy disregard for both the police and any newly qualified doctor; for clearly anyone who looks just out of puberty can’t possibly know anything .

No, if truth be told I’m quite cool about the whole thing. No, really, I am. So, if you are celebrating your fiftieth this year, consider these benefits. We can become rebellious, grumpy and shout at the telly, Saga will start sending us emails about cruises and funerals (I know which one I’d prefer) and, as we should have started using anti-wrinkle creams in our twenties, using them now is futile so spend the money on good wine instead.

If we have happiness and health, if we love and are loved then we are truly blessed. Downhill it may be, but potentially only half way through. So if fifty really is the new forty, bring it on!

Happy Birthday!Sandra Pagan

A new crown in 90 minutes?Although our patients tell us they like visiting the practice we appreciate they are busy people. They would wish to spend as little time as possible in the dental chair.

with this in mind we have installed the latest

CereC technology. This is a revolutionary

innovation that enables us to design, fabricate

a crown, inlay or veneer in a single visit. when

you arrive, a digital camera is used to take

an image of a prepared tooth, instead of an

impression or mould. you then relax with a

coffee and a magazine whilst we design the restoration. The whole

procedure that would normally take at least two weeks, if not more,

just takes around an hour and a half.

remember our success is your smile, For more information on

CereC please call us or drop in.
