COMMODITY ROUNDUP

In oil markets, U.S. crude was firmer after news of a govern-

ment decision to permit exports of lightly refined oil prom-

ised to open a new source of demand for the product. U.S.

crude CLc1 added 18 cents to $106.68 a barrel, while Brent

LCOc1 gained 20 cents to $114.20.

Gold in Singapore held on to small overnight gains on

Thursday to trade near a two-month high, supported by

safe-haven bids from weak data on U.S. economic growth

and a softer dollar. Spot gold was little changed at

$1,319.20 an ounce by 0008 GMT, after rising 0.1 percent in

the previous session. The U.S. economy contracted at a

much steeper pace in the first quarter than previously esti-

mated, turning in one of its worst-ever non-recession per-

formances, but growth already appears to have rebounded

strongly.

Fearing an input shortage due to the decision to raise the

level of compulsory blending of ethanol in petrol, the

chemical industry has urged the Union government to roll

back the decision without delay. In a letter to the ministries

of chemicals, finance, commerce, food and petroleum, the

ICC said the move would lead to reduced supply of indus-

trial alcohol, a valued raw material for a number of down-

stream industries.

Brent crude inched lower on Wednesday, but held close to

a nine-month high above $114 a barrel as Sunni insurgents

battled govt forces for control of Iraq's biggest refinery.

Platinum group metals were steady after tens of thousands

of South African platinum miners returned to work on

Wednesday after wage deals ended the longest and most

damaging strike in the country's history.

Silver prices fell for the third straight session and lost 0.67%

to Rs 44,703 per kg in futures trading yesterday on contin-

ued offloading of positions by speculators amid a weak

global trend. At the MCX, silver for delivery in September

fell further by Rs 300, or 0.67%, to Rs 44,703 per kg in a

business turnover of 341 lots. In a similar fashion, the white

metal for delivery in July declined by Rs 294, or 0.66%, to Rs

44,200 per kg in 2,399 lots.

NCDEX ROUNDUP

India is unlikely to achieve even 1mn tonnes of raw sugar exports, 25% of permissible quantity, under "Marketing and Promotion Scheme" due to pruning of subsidy period to seven months from 19 months proposed originally. Food Minister under the UPA govt. on February 28 this year ac-cepted sugar industry's demand and proposed subsidy on exports of raw sugar to tune of Rs 3,333 a tonne until Sept. 2015. It also put ceiling of four mt export during the period.

Coriander prices fell by 0.33% to Rs 10,600 per quintal as speculators reduced positions amidst subdued demand in the spot markets. Besides, adequate stocks position in the physical markets on increased arrivals from producing belts also put pressure on coriander prices. At NCDEX coriander for delivery in July eased by Rs 35, or 0.33%, to Rs 10,600 per quintal with an open interest of 27,560 lots. The price for August declined by Rs 34, or 0.31%, to Rs 10,908 per quintal with an open interest of 29,470 lots. Adequate avail-ability of stocks in physical markets against subdued de-mand led to the fall in coriander futures.

Chana prices moved up by 0.51% to Rs 2,939 per quintal as speculators enlarged positions on tight supplies from pro-ducing regions. Further, increased demand in the spot mar-ket also supported the uptrend. At NCDEX chana for deliv-ery in August rose by Rs 15, or 0.51%, to Rs 2,939 per quin-tal with an open interest of 64,630 lots. Similarly, the com-modity for delivery in July traded up by Rs 14, or 0.49%, to Rs 2,864 per quintal in 1,51,230 lots.

The dollar index .DXY fell as far as 80.091, a low not seen since May 22, while the euro bounced to $1.3627 EUR. Ster-ling climbed to $1.6984 from a one-week low of $1.6952, while the Australian dollar popped back above 94 U.S. cents from $0.9354. The lower dollar helped gold up to $1,318.75 an ounce, from a low of $1,310.36 on Wednesday.

The dollar languished near one-month lows against a basket of major currencies early on Thursday, having been knocked back hard after revised U.S. growth figures for the first quarter came in shockingly weak.

The Indian rupee hit a one-week low on Wednesday, weighed down by losses in other Asian currencies and shares but good dollar inflows for a share sale helped the unit recover to end marginally higher on the day.

The partially convertible rupee closed at 60.1250/1350 per dollar compared with 60.1325/1425 on Tuesday. The rupee dropped to as much as 60.3850 during the session, its low-est since June 18.

In the offshore non-deliverable forwards, the one-month contract was at 60.48, while the three-month was at 61.07.

India deferred a decision on Wednesday to raise prices of locally produced gas for next three months, saying the mat-ter requires more discussion.

India has moved a step closer to establishing industrial parks with China, the country's law minister said on Wednesday, as New Delhi looks to rebalance a $40 billion trade deficit with its northern neighbour.

The Indian government has raised the price at which it will buy the new season common rice from local farmers by 3.8 percent to 1,360 rupees ($22.78) per 100 kilograms, Law Minister told a news conference after a cabinet meeting.
