“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

1 Corinthians 12: 12-13, 27

My brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus,

Think of how wonderful it is to be able to call one another sisters and brothers in Jesus. As Christians, we are a part of God’s family, God’s very big family. It is this bond in Jesus that makes it hard as we prepare to say, “goodbye.” Yet, it is this very bond that first brought us together back in 2006.

In September 2006 when we arrived at United in Christ we were strangers to you, as you were to us, but we had the common bond of faith in Jesus which brought us together. Now almost nine years later, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we prepare to part from one another as loved and dear members of God’s family.

There is another way to talk about our life together, and that is as the Apostle Paul does in the verses shared above. Paul talks about the church and its members as the body of Christ. As Jesus’ body here on earth we each have our part to play. We lead you in worship, baptizing and communing, preaching and teaching, visiting and counseling, marrying and burying, and simply ministering to and with you as your pastors. You each have God-given talents and gifts to live out as a member of the body of Christ. Your abilities and willingness to serve, help, and love as part of Jesus’ body is what makes the church, the church. As sisters and brothers we are active and alive as Jesus’ hands, feet, and voice at United in Christ Lutheran, on the Iron Range, in Minnesota, the U.S.A. and around the world.

As Jesus spoke in the Gospel of John, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

When we act as Jesus’ hands, feet, and voice in the life of the world, it is not always easy, nor is

it always popular, or even what is expected, but it is right and good. It is what Jesus calls us to do, and how he calls us to live as his church, meaning, living in his love and sharing it every chance we get, wherever we can.

In the future you, as God’s body of United in Christ, will be living out and sharing Jesus’ love here on the Range. And we, your brothers and sister in Christ, will be living out and sharing Jesus’ love in Oslo as part of God’s family there. And so no matter the distance or time, we are apart, we still get to claim one another as brother and sister in Christ, now and forever.

Your brother in Jesus’ love, Pastor Joel

P. R. FOR THE PARISH

Do you have important information

to share about your ministry?

It is important to share what is happening with the rest of the congregation, and at times, also the community within which we live. The Congregation Council and the church office wants to make sure that each ministry or group within the church can be helped to share the news when needed.

Here is what we need you to do:-Decide: Who needs to know? The church,

the community, or both?-What: What do they need to know? Write down what you want to share.-Where: Where should this information be shared? The bulletin, the newsletter, the newspapers, the Facebook page, the bulletin board? -When: How soon does your information need to be shared? How often does it need to be shared?-Who: Sonja knows. Sonja will help you to get your information into the bulletin, the newsletter and direct you to the correct people for the Facebook page and at the newspapers.

It is up to you to get your news onto the “Information Super Highway.” The church office number is 744-2694.

SUNDAY SCHOOL UPDATE

May 2015

It is hard to believe, but we are at THAT time of the Sunday School year…the end of it! I’d like to uplift a few ministry celebrations and an opportunity coming up.

We only had “in the classroom” Sunday School twice during the month of April, due to the celebration of Easter and the special Kids Identification Program.

I’d like to begin by thanking Adam Roen and his dad, Kerry Roen, for coming to United in Christ on Sunday, April 19. (Thanks to Madison and AJ Roen for helping to set up the event early that morning, too!) Through their involvement with the Mason Organization, they provided and ran the Kids Identification Program. We had a wonderful turnout. Thirty seven kids were registered and went through the identification process.

Thanks to all the volunteers, who made it poss-ible for each child and parent to comfortably participate. A special thanks to Deb Tikkanen, Laurie Oates, Karen Terrio, Shelly Jarvela, Ali Hill, Rich Sather, and Chad Larson. We couldn’t have done it without all of the assistance from these people. Thank you for attending and participating.

Secondly, I’d like to invite everyone to the last Family Sunday School of the year on May 10. It is also Mother’s Day, but I invite you to come and celebrate the families of our church together during a special Sunday School time. We will gather at 9:45 a.m. and will have an activity to celebrate our Sunday School year. It will also be my last time leading Sunday School, as one of your pastors. So I do hope you will be there, as we have much to celebrate!

Thirdly, I’d like to thank all of the Sunday School leaders and teachers. It has been a priv-ilege to work with so many parents and teachers who feel strongly about building family faith. Thank you to the pre-school and Kindergarten teachers, Cassandra and Shaun Hainey, Tom and Chrissy Bartovich, Elisa Boe, and Kelly Suihkonen. Thank you to the 1-3 Grade teachers, Jessica Riess, Chad Larson, Kelly Sather, and Andrea and Chris Lintula. Thank you to the 4-6 Grade teachers, Emily Celley, Shelly Jarvela, and Ellen Williams. A special thank you to Jessica Riess, who has coordinated the Sunday School schedule! We are so grateful for the work she has put into helping us run a smooth year. (If I forgot ANYONE, I apologize and want to thank you too!)

Thanks to all of you parents, grandparents, and everyone, who has prayed for, participated, and built upon the foundation of faith for our youth. I am so grateful to have journeyed with you throughout the years. I will miss your children immensely, as they have meant so much to not only me, but to my family. Thank you for shar-ing your milestones: celebrations, sorrows, and

everything in between! I will continue to hold you in my thoughts and prayers as we move to Norway to a new congregation. You have taught me a lot about myself and the ministry we share together.

Last of all, you might be wondering what’s next…..what happens after Pastor Emily leaves? Well, at this point, there is a team of people who are taking on the Sunday School program next

Sunday School continued…

year. We will be gathering and resourcing to-gether. They are passionate parents who care deeply about the faith formation of kids and families and will be working to keep this mini-stry going and improve upon the foundation wehave already started. Please remember that during this time of transition, it might be fun and full of adventure. It also might be painful. It also might be a little bit like wandering the desert for a bit as you discern your way…but soon, you will come to a rhythm and routine that will move you forward in Jesus! I promise; it will all be okay!

The Sunday School process does require your participation. It does require your involvement and input. When the opportunity arises, please find a way to continue to be in the midst of it all!

You are important to this congregation and the life it continues to grow into!

Thank you again for everything and may God bless and keep you today and always.

In Christ,Pastor Emily

P.S. I love staying in touch and would love to hear from you as your

children grow! Please e-mail or connect with me on Facebook!

DAY CAMP INFORMATIONDay Camp will be held this year, Monday through Friday, June 22-26, so please mark your calendars as you plan your summer! You won’t want to miss this week of fun, fellowship, outdoor time, games, learning about Jesus, and making new friends. Counselors from Voya-geurs Lutheran Ministry will lead the week.

Lots of coordinating is needed as things come together to welcome the counselors and make sure all the details of each day are completed. If you are able to be a part of this week, whether it is donating snacks, providing an evening meal to the counselors, assisting during the day, driving the 4-6 graders to their service project, or being on hand for last minute help, we would appreciate it SOOO much.

Pastor Emily has always taken care of the details of this camping ministry, but she will not be here, so it will require extra hands and help for the week to go as smoothly as possible. Registration forms are attached. Please fill one out for each child and turn it in as soon as possible.

The cost of camp is $25 for the whole week. This is an amazing deal for 27 hours of camp! We want as many people as possible to attend camp during this week. If finances are an issue for you, we don’t want them to be, so let us know and come to camp!

A LOOK AT OUR

MINISTRY TOGETHER

May 2015

“There is strength in numbers” is an adage that applies when we look at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Northeast Minnesota Synod. We, United in Christ Lutheran and its members, belong to one of the 65 synods of the Evangel-ical Lutheran Church in America. This Synod includes 13 counties with over 63,300 baptized members, 137 congregations, 228 rostered personnel, and over 1,500 elected lay leaders.

The Synod and the larger church can do what individual congregations cannot do. For ex-ample, the Synod works with congregations in time of transition. At the last meeting of our Congregation Council, which included Pastor Vickie Taylor, Assistant to the Bishop, she walked us through the beginning process of transition. This is occurring because Pastor Joel and Pastor Emily have resigned their calls at United in Christ Lutheran. She provided a concrete plan to facilitate this transition and help deal with any anxiety we may have at this point. She reassured us that we have strong dynamic leadership and are a strong congregation. In addition the Synod provides support, leadership,

training for lay leaders in the area of finance, youth leaders, stewardship, public relations, etc.

Through the Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America we, as individual parish-ioners, can extend our mission to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, heal and visit the sick, and bring the good news of salvation to the world. We can connect with and support the Lutheran Churches in Ingria, Russia, India, and Honduras. Support of Duluth Twin Ports Ministry to Seafarers brings the world to our door. The Church, because of our support, is able to respond to world hunger and disaster crises.

The “hierarchy” of the church supports campus ministries, seminaries, continuing education, and youth ministry such as the youth gathering in Detroit. Ten of United in Christ Lutheran youth and two adult chaperons will be attending.Income from the upcoming Burger Bash will be dedicated to Lutheran Social Services. In important breaking news, LSS plans to build “The Center for Changing Lives” for the growing number of homeless youth in our area. Lutheran Social Services is a strong-arm of our church's effort to meet the needs of people. Your benevolent donations also support ELCA World Hunger, Lutheran World Relief, and ELCA Disaster Response. We cannot do this alone but together great things can be done.

Thank you for the love you show to our brothers and sisters in need.

“Be strong and courageous, and ac; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you.” I Chronicles 28:20

The above bible verse reminds me of the Women of the ELCA. With the support of many women, we are able to assist other women from our local community to women across the globe.

The spring is a busy time of activity for Women of the ELCA. On April 11, Stancy, Donna, Pat, Jan, LaVonne, and Elaine were part of the 70 in attendance at the Spring Laurentian Conference at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Aurora. Speaker, Cynthia Hanne, educated us about the biblical history of many hymns. Her theme was around, “Jesus is precious. We don’t need a sermon as it’s all in the song”. She reminded us that numerous songs come from the Book of Psalms. The offering collected that day, in the amount of $1,004, will go to Global Health Ministries and Church-wide ministry. The year-long penny collection had a total of $1,255.35 with support for Project Care Free Clinic. Penny collections during the next year are designated to

Duluth Center for Changing Lives construction project. In-Kind offerings for Global Health Ministries were collected and included many useful products. Congratulations to Jan Cutter for accepting the position of secretary and Elaine Edwardson for accepting a position on the nominating committee. The fall Laurentian Conference will be held at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt on September 19.

A pasty sale, organized by Melissa Gulan and Susan Anderson, was again held. Thank you to each person who contributed to make it a successful project. You are thanked and encouraged to help in the fall with the next sale.

WELCA met on April 27 and enjoyed a present-ation from Fran Lahti about her and Ken’s adventure to Finland accompanied by their granddaughter, Ingrid. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the group.

The annual women’s spring banquet will be held at the church on Tuesday, May 12, at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are now on sale for $17 for a catered meal of champagne chicken and entertainment by Shannon Gunderson. All women of United in Christ are invited to this event. You are encouraged to bring a friend to enjoy the evening with you. Door prizes will be provided by the circles.

The NE MN Women of the ELCA convention will be held June 12 and 13 in Duluth at the University of Minnesota. Visitors and delegates are still being sought.

Last but not least, I give a big big thank you to Pastor Joel and Pastor Emily for their time spent in ministry at United in Christ. We will miss you, but we wish you and your family a happy and healthy time in Oslo, Norway.

How to Start Running(Reprinted from WebMD

By Matt McMillen Reviewed by B. Nazario, MD

Whether you’re running for the first time, or for the first time in a long time, you want to kick things off slowly. Before you lace up your shoes and hit the pavement, try this smart advice to get into the race safely.

How to BeginStart with your diet. To fuel a run, keep well-hydrated by drinking at least 8 ounces of nonalcoholic liquid eight times a day and eating a small, sugar-boosting snack 30 minutes before you head out, says former Olympic runner Jeff Galloway, a columnist for Runner's World and author of Women's Complete Guide to Running, which he co-wrote with his wife, Barbara. He suggests half of an energy bar or a sports drink.

Find a buddy. Running can be a great way to stay in shape and keep connected with friends. "Women tend to respond better to running in

groups," Galloway says. "It helps keep them motivated."

Pace yourself. Galloway cautions newbies not to get overly enthusiastic early on. “Men tend to get injuries from overdoing it," he says. "Men who have not done any real exercise in 20 years and suddenly decide to run like they did in high school -- that's a formula for disaster."

The Walk-Run RatioGalloway, who works with runners of all ages and levels, teaches a technique that lets the body ease into its new type of motion. Beginning runners, he says, should run for 5 to 10 seconds out of every minute, walking the rest of each minute. Gradually, the walk/run ratio will shift as your muscles strengthen and your joints adjust.

Even in the beginning, when the bulk of your run time is spent walking, you’re still getting a good workout. "Walking is the best cross-training," Galloway says. "And a lot of people progress to marathons in just 6 months."

Running RulesHere are a few of Galloway's tips to keep you on the run and off the injured list.

Go for gain, not pain. "Follow the huff-and-puff rule: If you’re huffing and puffing at the end of a run, you’ve overdone it," says Galloway, who advises a slow and easy approach to running. "The bottom line: You need to monitor your aches and pains."

Avoid runner's lows. Done incorrectly, running can cause a lot of discomfort and even injury, Galloway says. "People get discouraged and feel they’re not designed for running. Really, they just need to correct their walk/run ratio, until it feels right."

Run through it. Galloway and his wife have written two running books for women. "We went through a list of concerns with physicians and ob-gyns, such as menopause, PMS, and pregnancy," Galloway says. "Women can run through all of these things, though they will

likely have to make individual adjustments to their routine."

David Tollefson, Congregation Council secretaryDay Camp is Coming to United in Christ

During the Week of June 22-26, 2015!What is Day Camp?Day Camp is a five-day camp experience filled with much of the same fun and excitement found in the in-camp programs of Camp Hiawatha and Camp Vermillion.  Day Camp is a “little bit of camp” in our congregation and community!

Where will Day Camp take place?Day Camp will take place at United in Christ Lutheran Church, June 22-26, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Monday through Thursday) and 9:00 a.m.-noon (Friday).

Who may attend Day Camp?Day Camp is designed for those who are ages 5 (entering kindergarten) through completed 6 th grade. The 4-6th graders will focus some of their time doing service projects in the community.

Why Hold A Day Camp?Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry offers Day Camp to K-3rd graders to provide programming for those who might not be ready to attend camp. Day Camp for 4th through 6th graders is intended to connect the students to the home congregation and community. Day Camp can also provide an excellent opportunity to draw in youth and families from our community! So, please encourage your friends to come with you!

What is offered at Day Camp? The Day Camp program includes: worship, crafts, Bible Study, camp songs, skits, nature hikes, and camp fun!

What is the cost? The cost of day camp without a scholarship is $50.  BUT, due to the Camp Sunday caramel and cinnamon roll fundraiser and “In Remembrance” Sunday, we are able to offer each child a $25 scholarship.  The total for each child to attend is $25.  What a deal!  Yet, we would never turn anyone away because of finances.  So, if there is need of a full scholarship, please let us know. Call the church office at 744-2694.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Day Camp Registration Form     Please attach a check payable to: United in Christ Lutheran for $25 and the health form.
