Birthday Musings

Pastor’s Column

This week-end I celebrate my 65th birthday. I share with you my Pastor’s Column that I wrote when I turned 60. Has it been five years already?

As I reread the column, I realized that what I feel at 65 is what I felt when I became 60, only the feelings are even more intensified!

I pray that I will have the opportunity to share these words once again when I turn 70!

As I celebrate my 60th birthday today, please allow me a chance to muse a bit!

The worst “decade turnover” for me was 30! I went into a depression that lasted for weeks. I thought I was so old. Can you believe?

I grew up in the era of the slogan, “Don’t trust anybody over 30!” All of sudden, I was 30 and I realized that I did want to be trusted. A shift in “worldview” was taking place in me.

Then one day I just snapped out of it and remembered how young I really was and how much more life still, hopefully, awaited me.

Since then, each “decade turnover” has been a remarkable gift…40 was great…50 even better!

Today I turn 60, another set of thirty years. Each decade of life has been an adventure and a joy. Every year has had its challenges, but, bottom line, because of my faith in God, in and through Jesus Christ, I am thoroughly enjoying and celebrating the gift of life.

I am thrilled with the ride! I am grateful for what has been and I look forward to what will be.

It is such a gift to be able to view the world through 30-year-old eyes, and then look at the same world through 60-year-old eyes, and see things so differently. The life experience that we

Vocations As we enter the transition from summer to fall, it might be time to consider a change in vocations. If God has been whispering in your ear, calling you to a life as a priest, deacon, or religious, now is a good time to explore the possibilities. Contact Deacon Tom at [email protected] or 760-727-8442 to discuss the opportunities. Being a servant of God and serving his people can be a fulfilling way of life. Give it some prayerful consideration.

accumulate over the years brings such a richness in how we see and understand the world around us and the people in it.

We live a Mystery that is totally incomprehensible. We find ourselves on this speck of dust called Earth within a Universe that is beyond our measuring and our understanding.

Yet we proclaim a belief in a “Source of All Being” that knows and loves each one of us and has counted every hair on our head.

The challenge, in the midst of our everyday trials and tribulations, is to recognize the Mystery, embrace it, and celebrate it on a daily basis. Our faith gives us the words and the rituals to celebrate this Mystery, and to keep Mystery as the center of our lives as we make our way Home.

I share with you the words of a poster that I once saw. These words capture what I feel today:

I cry at least once a day, not because I am sad, but because the world is so beautiful!

Thank You! Bob and I would like to thank all our dear friends for your prayers, cards, flowers, and delicious food while we were sick. We love every one of you! You are more than friends, you have been our family. God Bless! —Dottie & Bob Petruzzo

Bishops’ Letter on Marriage—Helpmates: “Marriage is a unique communion of persons. In their intimate union as male and female, the spouses are called to exist for each other. Just as Genesis describes Eve as a helper for Adam, we can see that in marriage, a husband and wife are meant to help each other through self-giving.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/laity/loveandlife/.

Memorials are a way of honoring those whom we love, whether they are living or deceased. Often, memorials are made for a special intention or in thanksgiving for a variety of blessings received from God.

Our Parish Campus will be a living memorial. All who help in building it will leave something to the community itself that will be used by generations to come. The good they do is not interred with them, but will remain to share in the divine activity of God here on earth.

Listed below are items still available for adoption.

All contributions will be recognized in a special memorial to be displayed in our Parish Memorial Garden.

For more information or to adopt an item, contact Chris Smith 760-758-4100 x120 or [email protected]

Hail Mary full of grace…

We do not pray as we ought…

Recently, we have heard many wonderful and amazing things from our Holy Father in Rome. With the advent of social media and other news resources, it feels like he is very close to us…immediate and ever near.

Prayer is central to Pope Francis’ spiritual life. On the balcony immediately after his election, one of the very first things he did was to invite everyone to pray the “Our Father”, the “Ave Maria”, and the “Glory Be” prayers. He has led us in prayers for Mexico after the devastating storms and called upon Our Lady of Guadalupe to intercede on their behalf. The Holy Father also invited non-Catholic Christians and non-Christian believers to participate in ways they feel are appropriate.

Many of the first photographs of Pope Francis were taken as he prayed the rosary in St. Mary Major and catching rosaries being tossed to him in St. Peter’s Square. Our Pope recites the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary every day.

Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Incorporating this beautiful prayer into family life is easy…the rosary is for every age at all times. Saying the rosary can be restful and calming in many situations…in times of stress, thanksgiving, awaiting the outcome of a test…

If you are uncertain how to pray the rosary, there is a sheet to help you inserted in this week’s bulletin. Here are some helpful ideas to make the rosary a meaningful part of your prayer life:

Be prepared: Make sure everyone has a rosary

Start small: Say one decade a day for several days adding more as you become comfortable with the prayers

Active participation: Get everyone involved—take turns being the leader

Pray with purpose: Why do we pray? What is the prayer? What is the purpose?

To Jesus through Mary—In the meditations and prayers of the rosary, the Blessed Mother is leading us to Jesus and teaching us about her son.

TOWERS OF FAITH

Future Support & Estate Planning Options

Towers of Faith is a movement that has arisen due to the visionary leadership and generosity of several of our Parishioners. We stress that this is not about the gift amount, but rather the love and thought behind the gift.

These individuals (several anonymous) have included STM in their estate planning. This helps to ensure their ongoing support and a legacy for our Parish. Towers of Faith is a valuable portion of our future support.

Examples of the various future planning vehicles are:

Designated Beneficiary Accounts, Last Will and Testament, Living Trust, Life Insurance,

Stocks and Bonds, Real Estate, and Endowments.

Any parishioners who have already included STM in their estate plans are Towers of Faith participants. If you are interested, please contact us. Your participation is most welcome and appreciated!

So Many “Rock Stars” ~ In God’s Service

In recent years, when someone has done an excellent job in their field, they are often referred to as “rock stars” . . . whether they excel in music, architecture, engineering, sales, sports, and the list goes on. It is easy to get caught up in the kudos of the day.

It is also easy to forget that we were gifted by God with a variety of talents. It is by God’s grace that we were born with certain talents and into whatever circumstances we were born.

A talent is a talent until it is used to serve God. At that point it becomes a gift of ultimate value, multiplying every time we use it. When we use the gifts God has given us to make the world a better place, we are being good stewards.

Very often when I’m at STM, I see so many wonderful stewards, using their unique talents to make the world a better place ~ in a wide variety of ways. I look at each of you as God’s Rock Stars. The beauty of this is that our stewards are so humble, they would never think of themselves in that way. Humility reigns here.

The gifts that God invests in us are for our own harvest, growth, healing and transformation. We pray for discernment as we go.

Whether we are at church, home, school, work, or play, it is easy to share a smile, a tear, time, a listening ear, or a pat on the back to show someone you care.

We continue to grow at St. Thomas More . . . not only with our campus build-out, but with our ministerial work as well. If you are not already on board with your time and talent, please check out page 10 of the bulletin and review the list of opportunities.

Thanks to Bill Ipsen’s Parish Financial Update earlier this month, we know that the help of the entire Parish is essential to meet all of our financial needs. Thanks to all of you who have already sent back your responses to Fr. Mike’s love letter! It is refreshing to see our Faith Community come together for the greater good.

I am humbled every day to serve alongside of each of you! May all of our combined efforts continue to make the world a better place. Please contact me if you are interested in helping but are not sure where that help might be. God’s peace, Chris

URGENT ACTION NEEDED! Urge the Governor to Veto SB 131!

This harmful, controversial and unfair bill could be acted on at any time.

1. Victims who were abused by teachers or other public school workers are not covered by the bill. Public schools cannot be sued for any abuse that took place before 2009.

2. SB 131 protects the actual abuser from being sued. The proposed law only applies to private

or non-profit organizations like private schools, the YMCA or the Church. It does not apply to public schools, other public agencies or even to the abuser.

3. SB 131 does nothing to increase criminal penalties against the actual abuser and provides no

increase in the criminal statute of limitations that would give victims more time to get the justice they deserve.

4. SB 131 ONLY harms private and non-profit organizations. The bill lets lawyers sue private

schools, the Catholic Church, the YMCA and other non-profit organizations for claims where the statute of limitations may have expired 30, 40 or even 50 years ago—but not public schools, other government agencies or the actual abuser.

5. It’s a step backward. In 2008, the Legislature passed SB 640 (Simitian) that leveled the playing

field and eliminated discrimination against public sector victims. That’s why abuse claims since 2009 are covered in public schools.

6. SB 131 creates two classes of victims and two classes of justice. You’re covered if you and

your family could afford private schools and expensive club sports, but if you went to public school, or played in city rec leagues or had public day care, SB 131 provides you nothing. It only allows suits to go forward against organizations that appear well heeled or well insured—and never against the perpetrator himself.

Please add your voice in opposing this bill, along with the California Catholic Conference, La Raza Roundtable de California, the YMCA/YWCA, the California Association of Private School Organizations (CAPSO), the California Council of Nonprofit Organizations, the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU) and a growing list of community groups, religious organizations and private schools.

How to recite the Holy Rosary1. SAY THESE PRAYERS…

IN THE NAME of the Father, and of theSon, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (As yousay this, with your right hand touch yourforehead when you say Father, touch yourbreastbone when you say Son, touch yourleft shoulder when you say Holy, and touchyour right shoulder when you say Spirit.)

I BELIEVE IN GOD, the Father almighty,Creator of Heaven and earth. And in JesusChrist, His only Son, our Lord, Who wasconceived by the Holy Spirit, born of theVirgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate;was crucified, died, and was buried. Hedescended into Hell. The third day He roseagain from the dead. He ascended intoHeaven, and sits at the right hand of God,the Father almighty. He shall come again tojudge the living and the dead. I believe inthe Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness ofsins, the resurrection of the body, and lifeeverlasting. Amen.

OUR FATHER, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdomcome, Thy will be done on earth as it is inHeaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgivethose who trespass against us. And lead usnot into temptation, but deliver us from evil.Amen.

HAIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord iswith thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for ussinners, now and at the hour of our death.Amen.

GLORY BE to the Father, and to the Son,and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in thebeginning is now, and ever shall be, worldwithout end. Amen.

O MY JESUS, forgive us our sins, save usfrom the fires of Hell; lead all souls toHeaven, especially those in most need ofThy mercy. Amen.

HAIL HOLY QUEEN, mother of mercy;our life, our sweetness, and our hope. Tothee do we cry, poor banished children ofEve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thineeyes of mercy toward us. And after this, ourexile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thywomb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweetVirgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother ofGod, that we may be made worthy of thepromises of Christ. Amen.

O GOD, WHOSE only-begotten Son byHis life, death and resurrection, haspurchased for us the rewards of eternal life;grant, we beseech Thee, that by meditatingupon these mysteries of the Most HolyRosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we mayimitate what they contain and obtain whatthey promise, through the same Christ ourLord. Amen.
