Reformation Sunday will soon be here – October 27!!! It’s a

good time to remember our spiritual roots as well as our

congregation’s life and ministry since 1951.

Two major emphases for Martin Luther that were vital to the

Reformation were the Word of God and the priesthood of all

believers. He encouraged Christians to keep God’s Word holy

and gladly hear and learn it. He also believed that all Christians

who have been baptized are called to do ministry within Christ’s

Church.

Our dear friend Carl Rieger was devoted to our Lord and

demonstrated both of these emphases throughout his life and

ministry within St. Mark’s. Carl loved to teach Sunday School

and did so for decades; can you imagine how many lives were blessed through his words of

wisdom and instruction? Carl remained a student of the Word who faithfully attended my

Monday morning Bible study during these past four years. Carl found many ways to serve

the Lord within this congregation, including choir, worship leadership, Free Spirits, and

Meals on Wheels.

There are times that I wonder about the future of the Church in North America, including

our congregation. Are devoted disciples like Carl Rieger a dying breed? When the members

of our “Glorious Generation” pass from this life, will the next generations stand ready to

love and serve the Lord? I remember hearing these words at the turn of the century and

they sound prophetic to me: We worship our work. We work at our play. We play at our

worship.

As your Pastor, I invite you to look at your personal discipleship and the stewardship of

your life:

Are you gladly hearing and learning God’s Word?

Is your life in balance and centered upon our Lord?

Are you growing in grace and in the knowledge of God?

Are you over-committed in the world and becoming disconnected from this Church?

Will you open your heart and mind to new ways of serving the Lord and building up

this Body of Christ?

I shared the following with our Monday Bible study group regarding Jesus who is full o f

grace and truth. [John 1:14] “Jesus’ words of grace express to all people God’s desire to love

and save us and give us the life we were created to enjoy with our Lord. But Jesus’ words of

truth are directed personally to each of us. He speaks the truth about rough ways that need

to be made smooth and the parts of our life that need transforming.”

Church Family News

Carl Rieger, a beloved member of St. Mark’s since 1953, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on

September 20. His memorial service was held on September 24 and was well attended by his

loved ones and church family. Carl leaves a legacy of faithfulness and service to our Lord that

becomes an enduring example for all of us. Please remember Gisela and her family members

during this time of personal grief.

Please remember in your prayers those who are currently hospitalized or going through

rehabilitation: Karen Dekko, Joy Groenke, Marge Killian, and Mary Ann Williams.

We rejoice in the Lord for all the people currently attending New Member Classes with

Pastor Gary. New members will be received on Reformation Sunday, October 27.

Thanks be to God! We are grateful for these couples who have agreed to serve as Mentors

within our Confirmation Ministry at St. Mark’s: Phil & Karen Ager, David & Michele Bodin,

Robert & Carla Burkhardt, Greg & Patty Carl, Paul & Leah Gradl, Kevin & Julie McNeill, Ed

& Linda Myzska, John & Shandry Peugeot, Mike & Michelle Price, Andy & Brianna Sieja,

There will be 38 persons attending our retreat at Lutheranch on October 11-13. Pastor Gary

will return and lead our Sunday morning worship services.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday! Lots of

good work was done within the congregation and the community.

Bishop Kevin Strickland and his staff members will be installed on Saturday, October 5 at

2 pm in Atlanta. Pastor Gary will be attending as one of the Bishop’s Deans. His new staff

members are:

Pastor Karen Boda, Assistant to the Bishop for Congregational Life

Pastor Jill Henning, Assistant to the Bishop for Leadership and Administration

Pastor Michael Jannett, Assistant to the Bishop for Formation & Communication

Pastor Patti Axel and Melissa Fuller Sims, Directors of Evangelical Mission

May you believe Jesus’ promise in the Gospel: If you continue in my Word, you are truly my

disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. [John 8:31-31]

Fall Festival is coming up!!

Is your costume ready? Mark your calendars for October 26th for our annual Fall Festival. The Fellowship Hall will be transformed into a place full of friends and visitors enjoying yummy-themed food, games, activities, and candy. THE CANDY. Please donate what you can so we can make this event a huge hit.

Our team is already planning and prepping for this, and we would love your help. Can you help with food? We could use donations to offset food costs, as well as peo-ple to help make and serve food on the day of the festival. If you're interested in helping (donations or working hands), please contact Lara Sieja - [email protected].

Do you want to help run a game or activity and see all the smiling faces and won-derful costumes of our community children? Talk to Jared or Jessica Waylander – they are the games gurus this year! ([email protected])

fellowshipping with our guests and clean up. We will begin setting up at

This is a wonderful way to reach out to our local community and is a great deal

Our existing Food Ministries

need YOUR help!

St. Mark’s Food Pantry fills orders for the FoodLine on a daily basis. We are in need of volunteers to come in one day a month (or more, if you want!) during

lunchtime for about a half hour, depending on the volume of orders. We also keep a list for subs - to be called on when someone is sick or unable to fill their spot. Please contact Stephanie Smith ([email protected] or 256-417-9318) if interested.

Our Meals on Wheels team has a new driver (hooray!) - now we need substitute drivers and a “team captain”. Drivers pick up food from The Senior Center and deliver to a predesignated route. This takes approximately 1.5 hours. The team captain will call on subs when a regular driver is not able to run their route and pass along other important info from The Senior Center. The team captain does not have to be a driver! Anyone could handle this administrative job from home in a short period of time. Please contact Dave Schultz at [email protected] or 256-883-0567.

Are you willing to provide dinner to someone in our church family on occasion? We are restarting this internal ministry - whether because of a loved one in the hospital, a death in the family, or a new baby's arrival, we want to show our love and support through food. Instead of stocking a freezer at the church with casseroles, we will set up an email based sign up when there is a need, and you can sign up to provide a meal if you can (home cooked, store bought or even deliv-ery ordered). If you're willing to be added to the list of possible providers, please send Courtney Spadaro ([email protected]) your email address.

Mom Bags - depending on your perspective, Christmas is a

long way off OR Christmas will be here in about two seconds!

With the latter thinking in mind, we are going to be collecting items for

the rest of the year to fill another 150 ‘Mom’ bags for Manna House. These gifts

are for the motherly figures in the lives of some of the visitors to Manna House.

We will be collecting full-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and

lotion; in addition, candles and nail polishes. After that, we’ll supplement with

random items like jewelry, make-up, etc. Please put any donations, labelled, in

the blue bins in Communication Central. Thanks!!

at 1 pm.

We pack 75 bags weekly for kiddos at MLK, Jr. Elementary. Food donations are always needed (easy-to-open cans of ravioli, fruit, and vegetables, oatmeal packets, 100% juice boxes, pop-tarts, pudding cups, and cheese crackers) and can be put in the blue bins in CC. If you would like to volunteer in some capacity, please talk to Jed Deason.

Food Pantry

Recycling Note

Please use your recycling bins at home for all recyclables.

Many programs that we have participated with in the past have changed. We will continue to recycle paper and cardboard. We are no longer able to recycle plas-tic (bottles or bottle tops) or aluminum cans at church.

For information about Madison County’s new residential recycling program, please call RANA at 256-801-CART or visit their website at: www.recycling-alliance.com.
