A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Karana Netball Club and congratulations for choosing to be part of one of the longest running netball Club’s in Tasmania.

We are very proud of our Club’s longevity within the netball Community, and our Members Handbook has been produced to provide you with all the information you will need as a valued Club Member at Karana. The best way to keep up to date is to make sure you join our Team App – if you would like to join this free communication tool please email Tricia Di Carlo at [email protected]. Being a member of Karana is much more than just turning up for an hour each week to play netball. There are lots of opportunities for you to become involved in club activities, such as being on the Committee / sub committees, assisting with fundraising and social events, joining our “SEA OF RED” social member’s club, coaching or umpiring, and mentoring new members. Parents and supporters are also encouraged to become involved in these activities for Karana or by becoming team managers or scorers. To enable our club to be successful and for our members to have the best opportunity to improve their skills there are a few guidelines that all club members must observe. • When you are selected to play for Karana you have made a commitment to be a part of a Club but

more importantly a team, therefore you are expected to give 100% to your team for the short time each week that you are together.

• That means attending training and giving your full attention to your coach/s while you are there. All coaches are volunteers and take time out of their busy week to help you to develop your skills. Please be polite and pay attention.

• Keep trying even when things aren’t going so well or you aren’t playing in a position that you like. Communication is the best tool and if you are having a problem please speak to your coach and he/she will be able to guide or assist you.

• Be on time for training and games. It is important to warm-up prior to playing so if your coach asks you to get to the courts half an hour or more before the game this is why.

• If you cannot get to training or a game you must notify your coach so he/she is able to arrange additional players if needed.

The Committee encourages a respectful and professional approach from all members within our Club and with this in mind have provided processes and policies for all members to abide by which can be accessed at any time on our website. We hope that you enjoy your Season and all that our wonderful Club has to offer. Go Flames!!

Susan Heawood President 2016

Flames Moving Forward – “Playing with Fire” The future of the Flames is looking bright with the 2016 squad comprising of predominantly 20 year old and younger athletes. This all looks positive for the future years if we can retain the majority of existing personnel. State League squads are working towards establishing a more competitive culture on a consistent basis. A productive Flames goal setting session has certainly paved the way for this exciting young group. They have set some very realistic goals and are fully committed to achieving these. Quality daily training environment (DTE), cohesion and pursuing excellence are just a few of the teams’ ambitions. With the holistic approach to work/life balance they will see the benefits both on and off the court. These intentions are backed by a dedicated and thorough coaching and support staff. Karana Flames are well represented in the High Performance Pathway in 2016 with six open players in the State 19s, two in the 17s and 1 in the 21s. The athletes are also a part of the Centre of Excellence and TIS. Karana coaching staff are also involved in the High Performance area with Lou Carter (Opens Coach) Head Coach of 17s State Team along with Kristin Terry (19s Coach) Assistant Coach of 19s State Team. Rosie Fagan our Assistant 19s Coach has taken up the offer of 15s Schoolgirls manageress. These opportunities and experiences for Karana staff will ensure that the club is heading in the right direction for our young athletes. A highlight to date is our pre season camp and exhibition game at the official opening of the St. Helens Multipurpose facility in February. Both Opens and 19s squad should be very proud of their efforts not only their competitiveness on the court against Cavaliers but their effort to connect with the St. Helens Netball Community on all levels. I would like to acknowledge our major sponsor St. Lukes and the Karana Netball Club who supported us in this initiative. I am very excited that Karana is leading the way in supporting regional netball and looking at the “bigger picture” for the sport of netball around our wonderful state. Get along to State League games and witness what is going to be an exciting 2016! Regards Lou Carter Head Coach

INSURANCE Provided fees have been paid, all members are entitled to lodge an insurance claim through STNA in the event of injury whilst training or playing netball. If injury occurs you should contact the STNA office or our club Secretary who will advise you on how to proceed.

CLEARANCES If you have been a member of any other STNA club in the last 3 years then you will have to obtain a clearance from that club before you can become a member of Karana.

POLICIES & PLEDGES At Karana we pride ourselves on our professionalism and our ability to provide appropriate policies and procedures to ensure all members and players have a thorough understanding of the Club’s guidelines and expectations. Our documents include a Parents & Players Pledge, a Privacy Agreement (for coaches), the Club Membership Form, a Publishing Consent Form (for printing of photos on our website or in our newsletter) and a Grievance Procedure Form. To administer these policies the Committee will require members to adhere to the pledges and agreements, some of which will require individual signatures. These documents will be made available at Registration Night, and are also available to be viewed or downloaded from our website www.karanaflames.org.au

MEMBER PROTECTION INFORMATION Since its inception the Karana Netball Club has provided a friendly and enjoyable environment, through which members can enjoy their sport, friendship and a social outlet. The Member Protection Policy that the Karana Netball Club has adopted is a flow on from the Netball Australia Policy. This ensures that our club has the best accepted protection for our members within the sport of netball. This new policy supports the provision of a safe environment for children, free of harassment and abuse for everyone. It also supports and promotes respectful and positive behaviour and values. The Karana Netball Club Committee endorses this policy as it fits comfortably within our club’s other established policies and codes of behaviour. The Committee is also committed to the “Essence of Australian Sport” – principles of fairness, respect, responsibility and safety. At Karana we are committed to ensuring that everyone within the Club be it Players, Officials, Coaches, parents or supporters will comply and be supported by this Member Protection Policy. The full policy document can be viewed on our website at www.karanaflames.org.au, contact details for our Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) Trish Commane on 0419 281 496.

COACHING/UMPIRING Once players reach the age of 15 they are encouraged to develop skills that will enable them to umpire and coach. It is not expected that inexperienced players should do this on their own. Our club has developed a buddy scheme whereby new or young coaches and umpires are paired with more experienced club members to teach them the necessary skills. Club members are encouraged to undertake accredited courses in coaching and umpiring to enhance their knowledge and understanding of netball. Karana welcomes parents and supporters who are interested in coaching and umpiring and gaining accreditation. Contact our Coaching and Umpiring conveners if you are interested. All teams are expected to provide umpires to meet our commitment to STNA.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS Karana wants all players to reach their maximum potential. During the year the opportunity will arise for you to try out for a place in representative teams and for Regional Academy positions (pathway to State U/15s). Representative teams for State championships and regional carnivals are selected during the season. Your coach will let you know when these selections are coming up so you can register your interest in trying out, or look for information on the Karana website www.karanaflames.org.au.

NEWSLETTER Karana puts out newsletters to keep members informed about up and coming events, achievements by our players and generally how our club is developing. If you have an item you wish to include email [email protected] . The Newsletter will be posted on the Notice Board at Hobart Netball and Sports Centre Creek Rd and a link will be emailed out to all members. To ensure you receive notification of our newsletter please make sure we have your current email address.

FUNDRAISING It is very important to a sporting club to have an active fundraising calendar so that we are able to give back to our members. Throughout the year you will be asked to participate in fundraising activities. The Fundraising Committee holds a number of events during the year which everyone is strongly encouraged to attend. As well as raising money for Karana they are a great way of socialising for all club members and are good fun events. We also have a wine order that takes place during the season, and this has proved very popular. Funds raised go towards purchasing new equipment, development programs and clinics for members, and club functions.

SPRING ROSTER For those members wishing to continue playing netball after the winter roster, a spring roster competition commences after a short break usually in October each year. This is a more informal competition with no training and an emphasis on having fun. The spring roster usually runs for 10 weeks and concludes in early December.

SPONSORSHIP Karana is currently very lucky to have the major sponsorship of StLukes Health along with a number of supporting sponsors who are listed on the back page. A sporting club can never have too many sponsors to help with equipment, junior development, coaching and umpiring development and much more. If you know of an individual or business that you think may be interested in offering sponsorship to the club please pass their details on to Casey Oates, our Sponsorship Co-ordinator at [email protected]

STACEY MEYERS FUND

Stacey Meyers was a valued Karana Club member for many years. She contributed as a player and especially as a coach and mentor to our junior club members just starting out in their sporting careers. Stacey was diagnosed with lymphoma at the early age of 17 but battled to overcome the illness and to once again play and coach netball at Karana. During late 2007 she was once again struck down and sadly died of her illness in September of 2008. She was 22 years of age. She leaves behind many who were touched by her beauty, sensibility, kindness and maturity of personality. In memory of her loyalty to the Club and the courage and determination she showed during her illness the Committee have established a fund – The Stacey Meyers Fund. The purpose of this fund is to provide monetary assistance to Karana Club Members who are found to be in financial difficulties caused through acute illness or a life changing traumatic event. Each year donations will be allocated from the Club’s fundraising activities to ensure the funds growth. If you would like to donate to the Stacey Meyers Fund you can do so by an online transaction from your bank to the account detailed below, by forwarding a cheque or money order made out to Karana Flames Netball Club Inc. Stacey Meyers Fund at PO Box 464 Moonah Tasmania 7009 or by contacting us at [email protected]. For more detailed information of the way in which the Fund is administered please visit the website at www.karanaflames.org.au and look for the link: The Stacey Meyers Fund Administration Document.
