Hello, Forever Young readers.

I have been working on this wonder-ful publication for more than a yearnow, behind the scenes, making surethat all the information ended up onthe page and before your eyes.

Now, with a few changes and somerevamping, I’ve accepted the challengeof writing Forever Young but will stillhelp to produce it. It couldn’t havecome at a better time because the artsare a true love of mine, and the focus ofthe December edition of Forever Young.

When I was little, I remember the busrides from school to museums. Therewere tons of museums to go to and as Iwalked around, bright-eyed and filledwith wonder, I became fascinated witha world that was beautiful.

Whether it was a science museum,Ripley’s Believe It or Not in St. Augus-tine or an art museum, I was alwaysenthralled with what was on eachcorner, wall and display.

When I was 18, I took a trip to NewYork City. When my cousin asked what Iwanted to see, the first place on my listwas the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Surrounded by paintings, statues andjewelry from around the world throughdifferent periods of time, I fully under-stood the history around me.

Each component of “the arts,” shows

us glimpses into other worlds, one thatis not in the here and now. They are atemporary distraction from life.

My love of the arts is found not onlyin paintings, but in the beauty of music,the well-choreographed steps of aballet or the perfect reenactment of acharacter.

This area of our beautiful state hasmore than enough to offer and Decem-ber is bursting at the seams with plays,recitals, symphonies and museumsfocusing on the holidays. There’s noexcuse not to get out of the house andwatch the beautiful light displays.

After all …’tis the season!There is so much to the holidays:

family, malls, presents and shoppingthat we can become bogged down witheverything. It can become hectic andthe stress begins to pile on.

Take a moment out of the day, planan outing with the family, whether it isgrandchildren or your adult children,and go see a play or a concert.

Browse through a gallery or museumand take the time to enjoy works of art.

In the months ahead, you will noticechanges to this publication, to make itbetter rounded and more enjoyable foryou. We hope to include morecolumns, including those with focuseson wine and travel.

As a last word, we hope you have asafe and happy holiday season.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St.Lucie Ballet will once again be per-forming “The Nutcracker” for a one-night engagement at the SunriseTheatre.

The traditional ballet, created inRussia and scored by Checkovsky, isa traditional play about a little girlwhose uncle takes her on a magicaljourney to the land of sweets.

Lydia Oquendo, co-owner of theSt. Lucie Ballet with her husband,Rolegio Corrales, will direct thisyear’s ballet. Mr. Corrales stars in theplay as the Cavalier.

“It’s a lengthy process,” Ms.Oquendo said of the production.“We start in August and most of thechildren in the play have had yearsof training. We have rehearsals everySaturday until the performance.”

Though they may be a small com-pany, their shows speak of thesophistication and professionalismof a larger-scale ballet company.

“The backdrops are rented fromthe Minnesota Ballet,” Ms. Oquendosaid. “We have lots of props and lushcostumes and special effects. I reallythink people are surprised whenthey see the play that we are a smallballet studio. (Mr. Corrales and I)have worked for ballet companiesthrough the years and we know howbig productions are made.”

The roles are filled primarily fromthe students at the studio, apartfrom a few of the principal dancers.Each year, the students audition andmove into primary roles as theyprogress.

“I’m extremely proud seeing thechange in the dancers year afteryear,” Ms. Oquendo said. “You gofrom seeing the small gingers to see-ing them grow up to play Clara; the

dancers move through the cast tothe top.”“

Mr. Corrales has been the Cavalierfor a few years now and said heenjoys being in the play year afteryear.

“Every year you find somethingdifferent in the play,” he said. “Youget better as you go. I also loveteaching the children and it’s impor-tant for the students to see meonstage and performing with themand having fun.”

For Ms. Oquendo, “The Nutcrack-er” is the play that speaks to every-one.

“People who don’t normally seeballets come and see this play,” shesaid. “They come with their familyand children and they’re always sur-prised. Even if they aren’t balletlovers, because it is a ballet show,

One hour can be worth generations

Afew of years ago, I was plan-ning a long weekend trip tothe mountains for our wed-

ding anniversary. We were flyingfrom into Charlotte, N.C. I knewthat it was close to where I needed

to research, but I shouldforget that, it was myanniversary.

However, I could-n’t help checking

the map and onlyone hour east was myresearch town. Ineeded to go “west”

with my husband,not “east” tothe library,

right? But itwas so close!

Thecourt-house

would be closed on Satur-day and the library proba-bly would be, too. Betterforget it, but it was so close!

It happens that my father’s familyand my mother’s family both livedin Richmond County, N.C., between1790 and 1836, in separate ends ofthe county. Each family had movedon in different directions

I checked the library hours.Almost any North Carolina libraryhas a great genealogy room withlots of local history. The library wasopen until 5 p.m. Saturday. I couldland at Charlotte, rent the car and

drive to Rockingham, and be thereby 4 p.m. One whole hour in thelibrary, then we could head west.

Fortunately, I have the mostunderstanding husband in theworld, and he doesn’t mindresearching and likes cemeteries asmuch as I do. He says, “go for it,”and so we actually pull up to thelibrary in Rockingham, N.C. at 4p.m. Saturday. It had a huge geneal-ogy room. He took one side and Itook the other and we spent thenext 45 minutes going throughlocal history material. Beforeclosing, I went to the copy machine

to copy the few thingswe found that might

mean something ata later date.Standing in line at

the copy machine, I

glance ata hand-drawn mapVernon has found ina thin little book. Ithas all the churchesin the county marked.The booklet is the history of thechurches in the county and has anindex at the back. In the index islisted “Knight’s Chapel.”

Quickly looking this up throughthe book, I find that Knight’sChapel was founded by MosesKnight in 1790. Moses Knight! He’smine, and the chapel is marked atthe state line right where he hadlived. This is a great find. I copy themap and the page I need, and weare kicked out of the library atclosing time.

FORT PIERCE — Sister is back atthe Sunrise Theatre this season for“Sister’s Christmas Catechism: Mys-tery of the Magi’s Gold.”

The all-interactive show has been asource of laughter for more than 18years and this version of the “Sister’sLate Night” shows, for more thaneight.

“It’s the sister going through theseason,” said Sonya Carter, chiefoperating officer at EntertainmentEvents, which produces the show.

“She interacts with the audienceand talks about Christmas,” she said.“It’s very family friendly. You canbring all the kids and grandparents.”

Sister will take the audience

through the mystery of the Magi’sgold, retelling the story of the nativityin a whole new way.

For audience members who havebeen to Catholic School, they mayhave flashbacks.

“It’s sister being a sister, so youdon’t want to come late because she’llget you,” Ms. Carter said. “Oh, and goahead and let your phone ring duringthe show and find out how she han-dles that one.”

The tour runs all over the UnitedStates and Canada, with more thanseven plays in the series including the“Late Night: ‘Til Death Do Us Part,”and Easter, Vegas and summer schoolversions.

Ms. Carter cautioned that no one isbeing made fun of and the hilarity is

a summer day in August, so we startvisiting cemeteries lookingfor my mother’s family,stopping to talk to neighborsand taking all their directions to thelittle cemeteries in the out-of-the-way places. This search brings noresults and so I reluctantly decideto give up and continue on with ouroriginal plans.

Knight’s Chapel is calling to me. Itis right on U.S. 1 a few miles downthe road at the state line. Of coursethat was in 1790. Before we leavetown, I say to Vernon, “Why don’twe just drive down the road. Who

knows, maybe there willbe a big sign with

Knight’s Chapelwritten on it?” Andso we do.There is no sign and

no Knight’s Chapel, but

after we cross intoSouth Carolina wepass a little whitechurch sitting farback on the road.

“There’s a churchwith a nice cemetery, do you wantto look?”

The sign reads: New HopeMethodist Church. That soundsfamiliar. I check the copied pages.

“Moses and WilliamKnight foundedKnight’s Chapel in1790, which later

became New HopeMethodist Church.”

Along the side there is a nicecemetery, and at the front, andsitting next to where the originalchurch would have been, is afenced-in section. Most of thestones remaining are the Knightfamily, some are Moses’ children.This is “our” family plot. It isSaturday night, tomorrow is Sunday

service at the church and there isno way I am going anywhere. Weare going to church.

As we walked intothe church, all fiveelderly attendeesturn to stare. Servicewas over, and they were havingSunday school. They were friendlyand polite, but had no idea how orwhen the church was founded anddidn’t really seem to care. TheKnight family is long since goneand they were only interested intheir own families and anxious totell me about them. The rest ofSunday school was spent on familystories.

My little out-of-the-way trip tospend one hour in a library turnedinto a memory of a lifetime. Wel-come to genealogy. One chancemeeting, one quick stop, checkingjust one more source, can changethe whole direction of yourresearch, or give you your own

memorable experience. Sotake the chanceand the time andgo, for it!

Dale’s is barbecue at its best

that made it popular in 1962 are stillbeing used today.

“We are a real, true, open-pit barbe-cue,” Ms. Webster said. “Every day, weuse real wood on real racks to cookwith.”

Another attention to detail is thatthe staff makes all the sauces,

coleslaw and bakedbeans from scratch

recipe for the sauces,” she said. The meat is first dipped into the

sauce, and then cooked hours over anopen fire. The result is a delicious fla-vor that melts in your mouth.

When I went for lunch I had a por-tion of baby back ribs, some slicedpork and beef, along with coleslaw,green beans and baked beans.

Even though the restaurant wasbusy for lunch, my food arrivedquickly. As I waited, I watched thewaitresses greet fellow diners, manyby name.

The sliced pork and beef were juicy,and I had fun trying the varioussauces on the table with the meat. Idecided I liked the sweet sauce withthe sliced pork, while I preferred a mixof the mild and hot sauces with thesliced beef.

While the meat was hot from thekitchen, my coleslaw was a coolbreak. Its creaminess held the shred-ded blend of cabbage very well, andthe carrots and poppy seeds gave it anadded punch of both color and flavor.

The baked beans were wonderful,as well. I enjoyed the hint of barbecueflavor the beans had from simmeringall day.

Also enjoyable was the slight spici-ness of the green beans. They werevery flavorful, and I made quick workof my vegetables.

I also enjoyed some ribs, both regu-lar and baby back, and I couldn’tdecide which ones I liked more. Themeat on the spare ribs fell off thebone, while the baby back ribs camecoated in a tangy glaze that made thisa finger-licking favorite.

Looking over the menu, I quicklyrealized there is so much more to therestaurant than the barbecue food it’sfamous for. They also offer barbecuechicken, fried chicken tenders, friedfish, smoked turkey, hamburgers,steaks and shrimp. There’s even a sep-arate menu for kids.

As for sides, I realized I onlyscratched the surface of what theyhave to offer. Dale’s also has onionrings, French fries, baked potatoes,

corn onthe cob,m a c a -roni andcheese, tossedsalads, garlicbread andapplesauce. Ican quickly tell I cancome back many timesand not eat the samemeal twice.

I look forward to returningwith my family and enjoyingboth the food and the atmosphere atthis family establishment.
