Stir Your Soul 2018 - 2019 Season

WHERE WILL THE MUSIC TAKE YOU?

WELCOMEWelcome everyone.

This is one of my favorite times of the year as I have the opportunity to introduce the Jacksonville Symphony’s next season to you, our loyal patrons. The 2018-2019 season is full of the music that the Symphony has come to be about and will be one of our most electrifying yet.

We begin with the second annual Fanfare: Opening Night, featuring three-time GRAMMY Award winner Branford Marsalis performing John Williams’ Escapades for Saxophone. Anchored by Tchaikovsky’s wonderful Symphony No. 4, Opening Night will truly be a not-to-be-missed concert.

We open the Florida Blue Masterworks season with Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. By popular demand, we’re bringing back to the stage such favorites as Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Ravel’s Boléro, Verdi’s Requiem, Brahms' Symphony No. 1 and Mozart’s “Jupiter” symphony.

Guests artists include organist Cameron Carpenter, violinist Jennifer Koh, cellist

Joshua Roman and conductors Matthew Halls, Gemma New and the return of Karina Canellakis.

For me, the highlight of the Masterworks season will be the presentation of Mozart’s gripping opera, Don Giovanni, the key piece in our January Mozart Festival. The festival includes a special presentation of Mozart’s works at UNF’s Lazzara Hall, a concert of Mozart’s chamber music and the film, Amadeus, which won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, with the score played live to picture by the Symphony. It will be a spectacular three weeks of Mozart’s music.

Our exciting Fidelity National Pops season begins with a rousing concert, The Music of John Williams. The season also includes the return of the wildly popular Cirque Musica with their incredible acrobats and aerialists. We’re also bringing back Tony DeSare and Capathia Jenkins who thrilled audiences two seasons ago. Their concert, Frank and Ella, should be on everyone’s calendar. And of course, we bring you Jacksonville’s favorite holiday tradition, Holiday Pops.

The season also brings you the Symphony in 60 series and a wide variety of special presentations to choose from. There are six movies in our Symphonic Night at the Movies series including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and the iconic original Star Wars. And, during the holidays you’ll get in the spirit with The First Coast Nutcracker, Handel’s Messiah and our New Year’s Eve concert and party.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our 2019 Gala which will feature the sensational cellist Alisa Weilerstein performing Dvořák’s tour de force Cello Concerto.

This will be one of our most thrilling seasons. I’m looking forward to seeing you in Jacoby Symphony Hall.

Courtney Lewis, Music DirectorHaskell Endowed Chair

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4STRAUSS Ein Heldenleben

The thread from Beethoven to Strauss is unmistakable. The Fourth Symphony is brimming with the same drama and humanity of Beethoven’s Third and Fifth. The program continues as Strauss takes these same unmistakable qualities to enormous proportions in Ein Heldenleben, “A Hero’s Life.”

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4

Beethoven’s Fourth contains every bit of the genius found in the Third and Fifth Symphonies, but paints with a brush of elegance rather than the hammer of power that those siblings wield. Its themes are fresh and spontaneous, and served as inspiration for the younger Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn.

A GUIDE TO THE SYMPHONY

When should I arrive?

We suggest you arrive 20 to 30 minutes before the concert is scheduled to begin. That will give you ample time to find your seat, relax, read Encore, our program magazine, and watch the musicians as they take the stage. Jacksonville Symphony concerts begin promptly at the announced starting time. Ticketholders who come late will not be seated in the hall until after the conclusion of the first work on the program. Concertgoers who must leave the hall before or during the playing of a piece will not be reseated until after that piece is concluded. In consideration of the performers and fellow concertgoers, we ask that you remain in your seat until intermission or until the concert has ended.

Masterworks Programs: Come early for INSIGHT one hour prior to the performance and enjoy an informal half-hour discussion about the program.

What should I wear?

Your concert experience should be comfortable, so we encourage you to dress to your preference. You’ll see a variety of attire, from business to a more casual dress.

Can I bring my children?

Children are are never too young to begin to establish an appreciation for symphonic music. However, we ask that you also be considerate of others. Evening concerts are best suited for children seven and older. Family-friendly concerts are encouraged for all and include Symphonic Nights at the Movies and all of our Saturday and Sunday matinees. Every child over the age of one year requires a ticket.

When do I applaud? There are two reasons to applaud at a Jacksonville Symphony concert: as a greeting, and to show appreciation. Just before the concert begins, the Orchestra members will all be seated on the stage, except for the Concertmaster - the violinist who sits in the first chair of the first row of the Orchestra. You can applaud to greet the Concertmaster when he or she comes onstage. You can applaud again a few moments later when the Conductor comes onstage. Any soloists who will be performing will usually come onstage with the Conductor; you can applaud to greet the soloist or soloists as well. It is customary to not applaud again until the end of each piece of music, to show your appreciation to the performers. Some longer pieces may have several sections, or movements, separated by a brief, silent pause. It is customary for the audience not to applaud between movements of a piece. The program will list the movements in each piece, so you will know how many there are; applause is usually reserved for the end of the last movement.

How long are concerts?

Most concerts are 90-120 minutes long with a 15-20 minute intermission. Coffee concerts run a little over an hour without an intermission. Symphony in 60 and Family concerts run close to an hour without intermission.
