• We love the rumor that a new business is opening up in Woodland Hills. It’s a partnership between a veterinarian and a taxidermist. They say no matter what happens to your dog, you’ll still get him back.

• “Doctor!” the frantic mother screamed into the phone one late night, “my baby just ate an entire tube of K-Y Jelly! What should we do?” After a moment’s reflection, the physician said, “If you really can’t wait, call one of the all-night drugstores.”

• Here’s a fact heard on Doug McIntyre’s ABC radio program: In the old days, cargo ships fighting shipping costs used to use dried cow chips to cheaply propel the ships. But, when sea water splashed onto the bow of the ship, it created a bad smell and methane gas, which often exploded, causing ship damage. Soooo, the sailors began storing the cow chips on deck covered with a tarp. The labeled the storage Ships High In Transit - which was ultimately just reduced to the initials of the sign. And you thought it was a golf term!

• After his divorce, Jones realized poker isn’t the only game starting with holding hands and ending with a financial loss.

• A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year old daughter to answer the phone. “Mommy can’t come to the phone to talk to you right now. She’s hitting the bottle!”

• Valley News Group wants to wish all our loyal readers - especially of this columnn - a happy and healthy 2020... full of laughter!

Word on the Street -----------------------------------------------From Kathleen Sterling

We have a family tradition.Every year the weekend

before Christmas my siblings and our kids head up to Big Bear.

The ages range from 16 to 60. Depending on schedules people come and go but for two to three days we just chill out from the holiday rush.

The beauty is the Internet is iffy and cell service even more so.

So we read, we take walks, we go to the village - we play games. Kids are not glued to their phones and video games. Parents aren’t glued to computers stressing about work.

We escape the pre-Christmas madness and just enjoy what’s really important about the season - which is each other.

We spend endless hours playing Scrabble and Rummikub. We take turns cooking breakfast, lunch and inner and cleaning up after one another.

We put on masks and paint our nails and sometimes hit golf balls over the fence onto the course.

We wear sweats and warm socks and watch movies. Walk across the street and visit with

neighbors and friends and in general just chill.

There’s time enough when we come down the hill to worry about deadlines, cash flow, last minute presents and all that jazz.

I go to a little mountain church where I can reflect on the real meaning of Christmas and then come back and cook Sunday brunch for the whole gang which is a treat. I don’t get to do that much at home so I cook up a big batch of bacon, eggs, cinnamon rolls, with fruit and juice and coffee and people float in when they wake up (or when they smell the bacon). Then I have a lazy Sunday afternoon.

I look forward to it all year because three days with nothing to do is a luxury. It’s not about gifts or giving or getting.

It’s just about loving the people we’re with and spending quality time with them unplugged.

On Monday we come down the mountain and then it’s mama time. As she gets older and more fragile we have decisions to make, things to arrange and every moment spent with her is precious.

But the weekend with just the siblings gives us a chance to make decisions together, pull together, reconnect and then celebrate Christmas as a family united.

My wish for our readers is the same - to have the time to celebrate those you love and as we move into the new year realize what’s really important.

There will always be work. Always be stress. Always be a list of things to do. The best gift of the season is just to take a moment to stop, give thanks, and give time to family and friends.

Have a beautiful, happy and healthy new year. We’ll continue to bring you all the local news of the west valley, and keep you connected to the community!

VALLEY ENTERTAINMENTPage 6, Valley News Group, December 26, 2019

By Theda Kleinhans ReichmanNoah Baumbach’s “Marriage

Story” on Netflix is a bittersweet drama about a relationship that is coming to an end.

Charlie Barber (Adam Driver, “Star Wars” and Scorsese’s “Silence”) is a New York director, married to actress Nicole Barber (Scarlet Johansson, “Avengers,” “Jo Jo Rabbit’). While they still care for each other, their career choices are driving them apart. He is a dedicated New York theatre director while she is drawn to work in Hollywood films and television. During most of their married life they both lived and worked in New York, but now she wants to be in control of her acting choices which are limited in the Big Apple. At this point in her life she wants to return to Los Angeles so that she can resume her career as a film actress.

In marriage counseling, they are encouraged to write a letter to one another, describing why they

once loved each other. Perhaps this might lead to an eventual reconciliation. He is willing to share what he has written, but in defiance she walks out taking her letter with her unread without explaining why.

In happier times we see the couple interacting with their son, Henry (Azhy Robertson) who is now 8. Charlie loves reading to Henry and playing games like Monopoly with him. Charlie is also a far better cook than his wife and enjoys preparing family meals. In the early years of their marriage their family dynamics seemed to be in harmony,

When Charlie realizes the end is inevitable, he is willing to work things out amicably with Nicole on their own terms. However when Nicole returns to L.A. for an acting assignment she is convinced by her family that it would be better if she hired a divorce lawyer. Her choice is Norah (Laura Dern) a real

barracuda in a skirt. At this point Charlie

reluctantly hires Bert (Alan Alda). Bert is kindly and affordable, but no match against Norah who is definitely out to take Charlie to the cleaners. In desperation Charlie then turns to Jay (Ray

Liotta) who is as conniving and forceful as Norah.

Life becomes especially difficult for Charlie as he tries to maintain a Los Angeles residency while continuing to direct in New York. And in Los Angeles he needs to prove to a family

evaluator (Martha Kelly) that he is capable of providing a suitable home for his son so that he can retain equal custody.

Writer/director Baumbach explored the pain of a broken marriage 14 years ago in “The Squid and the Whale.” He is now back in similar territory. This time he has created a film that has attracted critical approval and will most surely be an Oscar nominee.

“Marriage Story,” from Netflix, is rated R for language throughout and sexual references. Running time 2 hours, 16 minutes

Sting Takes the Stage in “The Last Ship” Grammy Award winner Sting will take the stage in “The Last Ship”

at the Ahmanson Theatre in January.Featuring original music and lyrics by Sting as well as a few of

his best-loved songs (“Island of Souls,” “All This Time,” “When We Dance”) the heartfelt and empowering musical tells the story of Gideon, a prodigal son returning home after 17 years at sea.

He finds that the local shipyard his town was built on is closing, and Meg, the love he left behind, has moved on. Tensions flare and picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie white (Sting) rallies the workers to take over the shipyard and build one last ship in face of the gathering storm.

The Stage magazine calls “The Last Ship,” “uplifting, intimate heart-breaking and universal.” The Sunday Mirror says the play is “Poignant and powerful...stirring stuff from Sting.”

“The Last Ship” will be on stage from January 14 to February 16 at the Ahmanson Theatre, located at 135 N. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, at The Music Center downtown.

By Janey M. RifkinBack in the year 2008, there

was a widespread outbreak of food-borne diseases from tainted pre-cut melon in the produce section of markets – both chain and specialty stores. Pre-cut produce is more likely to be contaminated with bacteria, because of the number of fruits and vegetables that are likely being handled all at once.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were able to stop produce centers from cutting up and offering for sale – parts of some fruits, such as watermelons and other varieties of melons. The widespread outbreak of salmonella was largely abated, due to their efforts.

Now – more than a decade later – food-borne illnesses like salmonella, listeriosis, and cyclosporiasis are largely blamed on pre-cut fruit. Do not purchase pre-cut vegetables, such as shredded lettuce, chopped and mixed onions, and carrots and

Health & Wellness Update

Prevent Food-Borne Illnesses celery at the grocery stores. Aside from possible contamination by handlers, pre-cut fruit and some veggies come with additives. To prevent pre-cut fruit from turning brown, often producers dip them in calcium carbonate to preserve color and texture.

Cut produce loses water fast, which means that water-soluble vitamins like vitamins B and C will evaporate faster. Baby carrots are often rinsed in an antimicrobial water solution that contains chloride; and this increases your risk of consuming infection via by-products.

Think about it! All such-described contamination possibilities precede the likelihood of food-borne illnesses such as salmonella. The best way to stay safe is to buy whole foods from trusted, local sources, and cut them yourself.

By Neill Simmons The highlight of January is

the Quadrantids meteor shower on Friday night, January 3. This event will get better as the night goes into the early morning hours on Saturday the 4th with 3 to 5:30 am being the best time to look up. As always, more meteors can be seen if you can get away from the city lights. Stay warm.

During the month of January, the sky is getting dark by 5:30 pm. The best object to see is in the southwest, the dazzling planet Venus is a beacon. Look on the 27th as the beautiful thin crescent Moon will be near Venus.

Our favorite sight in January is the “Pleiades,” also known as the “Seven Sisters” to the ancient Greeks. Look straight up each night to see this star cluster that is 444 light years away. As a reminder, a light year is a unit of length used to express astronomical distances and refers to the distance that light travels in one year, which is 9.46 trillion miles. There are over 100,000 stars in the cluster. Today we see only six stars since one is believed to have exploded.

Fun Fact: The form of the Pleiades is on every Subaru car.

Nighttrek Report: What to See in the January SkySubaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster. There were five little car companies in Japan that merged with one big company, thus the name Subaru.

Just below the Pleiades cluster is the red star, Aldebaran, which is the main star of the Zodiac sign Taurus. Below the constellation Taurus is one of our favorite constellations, Orion the Hunter. It has seven bright stars. Look for the sword belt which contains the Orion Nebula. All can be seen with the naked eye.

During the entire month, Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, rises in the East. While it is low on the horizon, it will twinkle red, white, and blue.

A very lovely sight happens on the early morning of January 20. The thin crescent Moon, the planet Mars and the bright red star in Scorpius, Antares, are making a triangle in the night sky.

NASA Fun Fact: Voyager I, which was launched in 1977 and completed its mission in 1989, is still in space at 20 billion miles from Earth and is still being

used to explore our outer solar system. Wish my car had that kind of dependability!

NASA Fun Fact II: What time is used on the International Space Station? It’s Greenwich Mean Time in London.

On January 10, the famous “Wolf Full Moon” will occur. Its name was earned

because at this time of the year, the wolves would howl all night from hunger.

On January 27, look southwest and find the dazzling planet, Venus. If you have binoculars or a telescope, the planet Neptune can been seen right next to Venus.

The Griffith Observatory is putting on a FREE Star Party on Saturday, January 4, at dusk and runs until 10 pm. There will many telescopes for you to look through, as well as astronomy experts to explain the night sky.
