Labatt's Blue sponsors Platinum Blonde datesPlatinum Blonde, who scored immediatechart action out of the gate with their Colum-bia single Crying Over You, will have the sup-port of the giant Labatt's Brewing Company(Labatt's Blue) for their 36 -date Canadiantour.

In making the announcement Labatt'sDirector of Marketing, Mike Egan, said"Labatt's has had an interest in rock musicsponsorship for some time. We know it's aneffective way of reaching our target market of19 to 34 -year -old males, and over the pastcouple of years we've had very successful in-volvement with concert sponsorship at venuesacross Canada." He continued with "Spon-sorship of a group seemed like a natural ex-tension of our music interests, and when thechance of supporting Platinum Blonde camealong, we jumped at it." He concluded with"They (Platinum Blonde) were Canada's topselling rock band last year and, as Canada'stop brewery, we like to get involved with win-ners."

The Platinum Blonde tour will kick offwith 2 dates at the Kingswood Music Theatreat Canada's Wonderland (Aug. 2 & 3), andthen will move east through the Atlantic Pro-vinces and back to Ontario for the end of

Ratt head out behindAtlantic releaseAtlantic recording act Ratt are on releasewith Invasion Of Your Privacy, an LPproduced by Beau Hill. The band's self -titled debut has surpassed double platinum(sales of 200,000 or more) status in Canada.Vocalist Stephen Pearcy recently toldRPM that the album took 3 months, on andoff, to complete.

"We had to go to Japan for a tour,"Pearcy explains. "The record took longerthan it ordinarily would have."

Lay It Down has been taken as a single, with the LP rising sharply up the RPM 100album survey at this writing.IsRatt's stagepersona something contrived for the bandby someone else - the label, for example?

"No way, not at all," Pearcy asserts, continuing with "We don't take on charac-ters at all; when we started out in LosAngeles, we simply dressed in what wehad - there's never been any attempt tofollow someone else."

The other members of Ratt are RobbinCrosby (guitar, vocals), Bobby Plotzer(drums, percussion), Juan Croucier (bass, vocals), and Warren De Martini (guitar, vocals). Pearcy is asked if the band cons-ciously set out to 'cross over' with thematerial on the debut. The band's debutsingle, Round And Round, certainly hit themark at CHR - firing into many Top 20sand making a name for one of a glut of L.A.metal bands last year.

"Radio formats won't bother Ratt,"Pearcy boasts. "We are that crossoveryou're referring to . . . I think we've comeup with an acceptable sound."

Ratt were performing in Fargo, N.D. on abill with Iron Maiden, Mama's Boys, andAccept, prior to heading out on their ownheadline tour. A European tour is imm-nent - the band's first.

August for a concert at the PeterboroughArena. Much of September will see them playsmall and large cities in Western Canada, closing out the month in Vancouver. Theywill be back to Ontario for October whichwill also include a Montreal concert (Oct. 12).

Mark Holmes, leader of the band, wasobviously pleased with the brewery tie-in."We have always wanted to play the smallercentres, which this tour will allow," he said."We know we have a lot of fans in thesmaller cities because of the letters we've beengetting, asking us if we could include theirtown on our tour - now we can, and I'm pret-ty happy about it."

To coincide with the announcement ofthe tour, CBS released Platinum Blonde'snewest LP, Alien Shores, which containstheir Crying Over You single. The singlemoves up to No. 21 this week on the RPM100 singles chart after only 5 weeks of char-ting.

A&M sets date forAdams' Diana releaseWith several Canadian stations already pro-grarnming Diana by Bryan Adams, availableonly as an import item, A&M has movedquickly to release the track which was the flipof Heaven on a 12" EP which will also con-tain a re -mixed version of Summer Of '69.July 29 has been scheduled as the releasedate.

Adams' current album, Reckless, whichhas enjoyed 38 weeks of action on the RPMsingle chart, is quickly approaching the6 -times platinum (600,000 units sold) mark inCanada. Adams will be playing hishometown of Vancouver (Sept.2) at thePacific Coliseum. Fellow A&M recording actPaul Hyde & The Payolas will open.

Antistatic processfor 3M videocassettes3M Canada currently employs a recently in-stituted permanent, antistatic process in itsProfessional PB (Beta) and PV (VHS) SuperHigh Grade 1/2" videocassettes.

Videocassettes, since their introductionin the early '70s, have been plagued with theproblem of static buildup - contributing to anincreased dropout rate and an overall lower-ing of reproduction quality.

The process is essentially based on therendering of the half-life electrostatic chargeso short that plastic parts cannot retain astatic charge.

He continues with: "This committee br-ings together . . all the players involved withthe broadcasting, the recording, the enter-tainment industries as well as various levels ofgovernment. The findings of this committeeand their recommendations could have an im-portant impact on the future of the recordingindustry in Quebec and will help determinethe role of broadcasting in the promotion andthe use of French -language records."

The formation of the Consultative Com-mittee evolved from requests by someFrench -language broadcasters for a reductionin the required level of French -language vocalmusic, now set at 65 percent of total musicplayed. The broadcasters had argued that theproduction of French -language records haddecreased, particularly in the fields of rock -oriented and dance music.

"When people talked about the band, many referred to us as Hooples anyway. So there

wasn't any problem - and besides, we don't have to worry about any infringement."

Besides Lodge, Hooples comprises guitarist Rock Howsell (another original

member), drummer/vocalist Grant Heywood, and keyboardist/vocalist Jack

Kalenarian.

Valdy tour/Siberry LP score for Duke Street

While in Toronto recently doing promo for his Duke Street Records LP, Notes From

coast -to -coast tour. Country programmer ac- ceptance of Valdy's Sonny's Dream has been

quick and this week the single enters the RPM Country 60 at No. 56.

In other label news, Jane Siberry has completed a video with Deborah Sameuls for

the title track from her 2nd LP, The Speckless Sky. Siberry's debut LP, No

Borders Here, was a critical success on both sides of the border. The Speckless Sky LP is

pencilled in for a September release. Brian Plummer's tour kicks off July 29

in Winnipeg. Stop Running is the video - supported single from Plummer's 2nd LP for

Mackey keeps eye on CKFM's future course

Since RPM spoke with Toronto station CKFM's General Manager John Mackey in

early June, several changes have occurred at the station, notably the departure of Program

Director Jerry Good and Music Director Sheila Connor. What are Mackey's observa- tions after 6 weeks in the GM's chair?

"I wouldn't say I've noticed that much about the market," Mackey responds. "I've spent more of my time looking at CKFM

-where has it been, and what the (future) course should be. It's obvious that CHUM - FM has adjusted their approach toward AOR

to a more hit -oriented, familiar sound. CHFI has done the same thing. Those changes are the noticeable ones to me. On the AM side,

everything sounds the same to me as it did 6 months ago."

On -air, the departure of Jay Nelson recently allowed Mackey to shift Russ

Thompson from the afternoon drive slot to mid -day. Mackey has also hired Bill Ander- son, with Terry Michael working weekend

mornings.

CKFM now utilizes a "music committee" in programming its music, a

situation that is undeniably connected with Mackey's arrival at the station in late May of

this year.

"I don't believe in today's competitive situation that one person should decide what

music a radio station plays," he asserts. The committee consists of Mackey, Scott Stewart,

Paul Cugliari, and Ian Kennedy, the station's Director of foreground programm-

ing. Mackey intends to hold down both the GM and PD positions "for at least a year".

Finally, what is Mackey's opinion on "fixed format" programming as practiced in many U.S. radio markets?

"You can't compare what's happening in Canada with what's happening in the United States," he states bluntly, "because FM radio

is highly regulated in Canada. It's simple to come up with a format in the United States

. .

. in Canada, where there are requirements

concerning spoken word and hits ratios, you have to do it (program) within regulations."

Dennis Davidson to handle IMV '85

Dennis Davidson Associates have been ap- pointed exclusive representative (U.K., Europe and U.S.) for IMV '85 - the 1st An-

nual International Music Video Festival. IMV '85 will be held in London, Oct. 16-18,

concurrent with MUSEXPO '85 and VIDEX- PO '85 at the Kensington Rainbow Exhibi-

tion Centre.

The announcement was made by Roddy S. Shashoua, Chairman of International

Trade and Exhibitions and MUSEXPO. Dennis Davidson Associates' mandate

will include processing U.S. and European participants as well as coordinating judges,

seminar panelists, and the gala awards presentations.

industry golf tournament banquet? I'veheard tamer reportoire at all male stags. It was a fun night, but next year let'smaintain a bit of sobriety!) You meanbefore the banquet!

This industry IS all together ... !!!This was the 12th year for the OntarioMusic Industry's Golf Tournament and itturned out to be one of the best testamentsto the togetherness of the industry. Theyplayed hard - drank in moderation - atewell - and how could they help it - the foodwas exceptional. I thought when I saw thespread that Sammy -Jo had catered theaffair. It looked like everyone came awaywith a prize. It was also gratifying to seehow well some of the record/broadcastheavies took the barbs that were thrownat them - all in good fun - of course. TheGolf Committee certainly deserves a voteof thanks . . . . so THANKS: Jane Bell,Sylvia Harding, Sue McLean, Alun Elias,John McBride, Garry Newman, and DonOates .. . it was a great event.

Cancon was once a thriving industry!!It seems that Cancon is now a thrivingindustry looking for handouts and workingout of the public purse - and charitabledonations from broadcasters. A whole newindustry has opened up and getting productout is becoming secondary. Interesting, that most of the success stories in Canadawere the product of free enterprise. There'sa message there. How would you feel if yourhit was backed by a handout (if it everhappens)?

More hot items for retail . . . !!This has to be one of the better summerseasons, as far as retail is concerned, thatI've seen in a long time . . and just lookwhat's coming up: Platinum Blonde couldn'tbe hotter . . . so stock up on their single,Crying Over You. They're also hot withtheir album release, Alien Shores . . andI'd go heavy on the cassette with this one.Now that a couple of the older ladies in thebusiness have bounced into top of the chartspositions . . . look for Aretha Franklin tobecome one of the hottest acts over thenext couple of months. Her single, FreewayOf Love and LP, Who's Zoomin' Who, bothhave hit, hit, hit written all over them.Billy Joel is bouncing back up the chartsonce again . . . this time with his single,You're Only Single (Second Wind) andhis LP, Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 11. Watchfor these releases to bring a lot of customersinto the stores . . . so display them promi-nently.

Charity doesn't begin at home!!In case those nice folk in Vancouver wonderwhy we never expected them to call back ... . . we knew the answer to our questionbefore we asked it. Now you know howthe game is played. We've been around fora long time!!! (EC: We can't be bought!)

Besides being a trendy dresser . . . !!Nice to see some of the record peopledressing according to today's fashions. One in particular is Kim Zayac at CBS.Looks like he shops in the best places, probably Montreal. He's even influencingsome of the other people at the label. Justbecause you're over 35 . . . you don't have

to look like a "spas . . . . ''. Kim is alsotuned into the latest in record/radio jargon.Watch for the expression "Off the rackrock". Here's another neat observationfrom him - he says the battle isn't betweenAOR and CHR anymore - it's betweenstereo and mono. There you go - a call toKim Zayac and you've got a whole newperception of the business.

Springsteen to CNEIt's probably old news by the time you readit here, but Bruce Springsteen's firmed datesfor Toronto's CNE (Aug. 26 & 27) will nodoubt spark more sales for the Boss' Born InThe USA LP. The album, which is still inteens of the RPM 100, has been on thechart for 60 weeks. I don't envy LyndaKay's job over this period of time. She willbe bombarded by all kinds - hoping to gettickets and an interview with Springsteen. There won't be any interviews or real closelooks at Springsteen . . . he's a very privateperson . . . and maybe that's why he isso successful.

Never a lender . . . nor a borrower. . !!If you're an employee of the post office, and you are reading this, put the RPM backin the envelope, back into circulation andlet it get to the subscriber. Now get yourown copy! No kidding, we know it happens.Although we really try not to cater to con-sumers, RPM seems to capture the attentionof many . . . and there is a lot of interestin RPM's charts. Springsteen to CNE It's probably old news by the time you read

it here, but Bruce Springsteen's firmed dates for Toronto's CNE (Aug. 26 & 27) will no

doubt spark more sales for the Boss' Born In The USA LP. The album, which is still in

teens of the RPM 100, has been on the chart for 60 weeks. I don't envy Lynda Kay's job over this period of time. She will

be bombarded by all kinds -

hoping to get tickets and an interview with Springsteen. There won't be any interviews or real close looks at Springsteen

Kim Carnes' Crazy In The Night is movingup the charts right across Canada, fromCKLG and CFMI toVOCM and C-100,and is sitting in thetop teens on U.S.trade charts. This isperhaps herstrongest single sinceBette Davis Eyes, and her Barking AtAirplanes also con-tains further hitmaterial.

Bluenote artist Stanley Jordan is makinginroads in the U.S. where his Magic Touchalbum topped U.S. jazz charts for severalweeks running and is currently in the Top`30s on black charts. Sales momentum inCanada is building, pehaps due to Stanley's 2 recent concerts in Toronto and Montreal(where his Spectrum audience gave him 3standing ovations).

If Corey Hart hasn't already topped thecharts with Never Surrender, this track is head-ed in that direction. Boy In The Box isalready double platinum here. Corey kicks ofhis 21 date Canadian tour on July 20th in St.John's Nfld.

The latest Coney Hatch single is She'sGone. The band continue to play live dates, and are now playing markets in Ontario.

Story by Limahl continues to sell very well, and reached Top 10 status on several charts

across Canada. Bluenote artist Stanley Jordan is making

inroads in the U.S. where his Magic Touch album topped U.S. jazz charts for several weeks running and is currently in the Top

'30s on black charts. Sales momentum in Canada is building, pehaps due to Stanley

's 2 recent concerts in Toronto and Montreal (where his Spectrum audience gave him 3

standing ovations). If Corey Hart hasn't already topped the charts with Never Surrender, this track is head-

ed in that direction. Boy In The Box is already double platinum here. Corey kicks of

his 21 date Canadian tour on July 20th in St. John's Nfld.

September, with the studio project likely to be the first released. Orbison and Will Jenn-

ings are producing half of the studio session in Nashville the other in England. Collabora-

Orbison's debut entry for Island is Wild Hearts, a single taken from the Insignificance motion picture soundtrack. The film, to open

in Canada in late summer, was directed by Nicholas Roeg, who also worked on Perfor-

mance, a motion picture that starred Mick Jagger. In The Insingnificance film Gary Busey stars. Busey also portrayed Buddy Holly in the film on the late rock legend.

Comstock promotion launches Peters single

"We're launching our biggest record of the year", says Comstock's Frank Fara. He is

referring to the release of Doug Peters' single, The World Is Round, an original from

the Florida songwriter/performer. "Several majors have expressed interest in Doug,"

Fara continues, "and we think this is the one that's going to put him over the top - one of those rare situations where an act has been

equally accepted by critics and programmers alike."

Comstock recording artist Doug Peters (I) with Lee Greenwood at Ronnie

Prophet's Carousel Club (Nashville).

It's obvious that Peters has his own sound and style, brought into proper focus

with this Patty Parker production. An added boost for the Nashville production (Chelsea

Studio) was the employing of Music City's top session people. Of particular interest is the

lead instrument. "It's a fiddle", explains Fara, "being played like a lead guitar with some special effects added. And no one

thought a fiddle could be played this way - ex- cept the man who did it - Buddy Spicher."

The Peters release is being promoted from Comstock's Kansas City headquarters.

Radio promotion is headed by Marsha Puhi with Fara looking after the international PR.

MPI looking for Cancon product!!I have been having a problem obtainingCanadian content Adult Contemporarymusic that is listed in RPM. I have person-ally searched Toronto for these singles andLP's, but they do not seem to be availablein any record store. A few examples are:When I Fall In Love by Bijou; You CanBreak My Heart Anytime by MadonnaTassi; and Rain, Rain by Prairie Oyster. The list goes on and on.

MPI is an international foregroundmusic syndicator. We program for broad-casters throughout the United States,Canada, Australia and by fall we will havea distributor network in Europe. It would bemy feeling that these singles or LP collec-tions would widen the scope of my E -ZROCK program as well as broaden theexposure of the artists concerned.

An estimated 70,000 countryfans had descended on the small town's rodeogrounds for the big event that headlined TheOakridge Boys, Merle Haggard, Janie Fricke,Kathy Mattea and George Jones, to namejust a few. Sumsion was one of the few actsthat received a standing ovation.

Organizers of the 3 -day event are con-vinced this is one of the largest country musicjamborees ever held in Canada.
