From trash to treasure with

up-cycled soup cans.

These simple yet pretty

mini-planters are a cinch

to make and will spruce up your home for spring. When

the Easter weekend

arrives, pop in a couple of themed items

for a holiday vignette.



1The first step is to clean out the soup cans and simply brush on an acrylic paint in a colour of your choice. I chose a Robin’s Egg Blue and mixed in a tiny bit of yellow.

Once dry, wrap a thin band of burlap followed by a piece of lace around the cans and hot glue in place.

2Divide a 6” pot of forced daffodils and place a group of three in each can with a little soil to hold them in place. Top each can off with moss, gently placing it around the stems.

You can leave these as is or use them as place card holders for your Easter dinner or a luncheon with the girls. Simply write the names of your guests on little faux eggs, insert a skewer and push into the soil. Your friends and family will love these take home gifts.

There is nothing ordinary or typical about a spring meal celebrated with the Thachuk family. Carrie, proprietor of The Passionate Home, and her husband Mike, have transformed a basic suburban lot into an idyllic oasis. A lover of all things vintage and a staunch “re-purposer”, Carrie finds beauty in the unwanted, transforming pieces into highly sought-after items.

“A memorable meal is about more than just the food we serve, it’s the perfect combination of flavours, ambience and company that come together to create an unforgettable event,” reflects Carrie. We think that the couple themselves are the perfect entertaining combo; he’s a whiz in the kitchen and she makes setting the scene look effortless.

For the first outdoor meal of the year, the duo created an extra-special space to share with family and friends. While the sofa is typically used in the couple’s living room, it was re-purposed for this occasion. “I like to bring the unexpected into entertaining,” says Carrie. “One day I looked at my sofa and suddenly an idea for our next al fresco meal was born.”

Working with what she had both in her home and backyard, Carrie created an outdoor setting that most of us only dream about. With additional elements such as the incredibly elegant crystal chandelier paired with the simplicity of blooms cut from her own rose bushes, this is a meal that will forever be remembered.

A LEGACY: Carrie inherited a set of her Nana’s elegant dishes which, when juxtaposed against the rustic burlap, compliment each other perfectly.

Spring is the season for peas and asparagus! Combine these fresh, green jewels with rich, homemade ricotta and salty prosciutto for an easy, elegant pasta dinner.

Ingredients2 cups dry orecchiette pasta14 asparagus spears, chopped1/3 cup freshly shelled peas2 slices prosciutto, torn into pieces1/2 cup fresh or store-bought ricotta* 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oilFreshly squeezed juice from one lemonFreshly grated parmesan cheeseSea salt and cracked pepper to tastePea shoots for garnish

InstructionsBring a large pot of water to boil. Add orecchiette pasta and

cook until just barely al dente. Add asparagus and peas to water

until both turn bright green, about 1-2 minutes. Drain pasta, peas

and asparagus and place into a large serving bowl.

Toss pasta, peas, and asparagus with olive oil, lemon juice,

prosciutto, and parmesan cheese. Divide pasta onto two plates.

Add dollops of fresh ricotta on top of pasta. Season with salt and

pepper. Drizzle on more olive oil and add more parmesan if desired.

Garnish with pea shoots for extra crunch and flavour. Enjoy!

A self-proclaimed wine and gin girl, my recent wanderings took me to visit some of the budding craft beer breweries that have popped up east of Vancouver. With the growth of the craft beer industry showing little sign of slowing, this wine girl figured it was time to get educated.

Look east to Abbotsford and you will find Surlie Brewing, Old Abbey Ales, and soon-to-be-open Ravens Brewing Co.

Surlie Brewing is producing two brews through their location; a Belgian ale, Solitaire, and their pale ale, Fixation. Ravens Brewing Co. is looking to open in April with three inaugural beers plus seasonal and guest taps in the plans. As I sat chatting with Surlie Brewing owner and brew master, Tim Brown, and Ravens Brewing Co. owner, Paul Sweeting, they were quick to tell me craft beer is “more of a culture than a trend.”

With B.C. craft beer sales seeing year-over-year increases and more than 20 breweries with projected openings in 2015, I would have to agree. This sit down did leave me feeling like a fish out of water, as I mused about not having a palette for beer. Brown reminded me, if I know what I like, then I DO have a palette for beer.

Moving west, I planned an afternoon with friends to hit up Steel and Oak Brewing Co. in New Westminster, and Moody Ales, and Yellow Dog Brewing, both in Port Moody.

The vibe at each was the same, yet completely different. The obvious — they all offer an array of craft beer to sip, tip, and taste your way through. Most have seasonal, guest, or experimental taps available that accompany their bread and butter brews which are offered year ‘round. But, each also offers a unique sense of community that I am yet to find at my local pub or wine bar. Steel and Oak co-owner, Jordon Foss, has created a space that is inviting and modern with six taps waiting for visitors to their tasting room. Add some board games and old school vinyl to pair with your beer and you’ve got yourself an afternoon. At Moody Ales the community feel continued, with regulars who were coming and going through the front and back of the brewery. In both, I felt the need to embrace the hipster vibe as we hoped for a stroke of luck in finding a vacant seat.

Not far from Moody Ales, and on the same street, is Yellow Dog Brewing. We were greeted by a large portrait of the fur-face of the brand and a space bustling with a variety of people. From couples with strollers to a man and his dog stopping in for a growler refill, I think I found my spot, but then, I am a sucker for dogs.

In each, none has been open for more than 12 months, and all seem to be running full brew ahead as they work to keep pace with the demand for their product, both in the tasting room and on the shelf. Similarly, the thread with each was consistent — it is not about competition, but about collaboration and community. None have televisions to distract from the village feel.

And Tim was right, I DO have a palette for beer, but more so I have a palette for the social, community feel these craft breweries seem to be bringing to my neighbourhood.

tips for your own beer adventures: • Family (and dog) friendly. It was not unusual to see kids in the tasting rooms with their grown-up beer loving chaperones. Steel and Oak Brewing Co. offer locally made sparkling lemonade for their younger guests and designated non-drinkers. At Yellow Dog Brewing kids and dogs are welcome and it isn’t unusual to see a number of hounds hanging out in the tasting room.

• Generous hours. I was surprised to see most of the tastings rooms were open Saturday and Sunday from noon until 7p.m. or even 10 p.m., depending on the location.

• Don’t forget to eat. With all that beer you may need some food. Again, best to check the social feeds of your destination brewery; many have partnered with local food trucks who are parked out front to offer some sustenance.

• Get ready to mingle. The best part of visiting a local brewery, aside from the beer, is the community. Don’t be afraid to chat to your neighbour.

• Transportation. Before all that fun, be sure to draw straws to determine who the designated driver is going to be.
