Value of the Month: Kindness
Merry Christmas
I find it hard to believe the autumn term has
gone so quickly and we are about to break up
for the Christmas holidays.
I would like to say a big thank you to the staff,
children, parents/carers and governors for all
their hard work and support this term.
On behalf of everyone at Stillness Junior
School, may I wish you and your families a
happy and peaceful Christmas, and best wishes
for the New Year.
Our new term begins on Wednesday, 3 January
2018 at 8.50am and we look forward to seeing
our children return refreshed and eager to learn
in the new calendar year.
Merry Christmas!

Headteacher
Toilets and Changing Rooms
Can we please remind parents/carers that the
toilets and changing rooms on school site are
for the use of CHILDREN ONLY. Please do
not use or enter these areas at any time –
including before or after school.
If your child needs to use the toilet facilities or
wishes to look for something in the changing
room, please send them in on their own and
wait outside.
Your support on the above is very much
appreciated. It is extremely important that we
all take an active role in safeguarding the
children who attend this school. Many thanks.
UNICEF: UNICEF: UNICEF: UNICEF: Article 43: UNICEF can provide expert advice and
assistance on children’s rights.
Christmas Coffee Morning
We will be holding a Christmas coffee morning on
Friday, 15 December 2017 from 8.50am in the
parent room.
Please pop along and join us for a mince pie and a
cuppa!
Be lovely to see you all before we break for the
Christmas holidays.
Cezanne trip to British Museum
Our trip took us all the way from Honor Oak Park to
Great Russell Street to see the sights of the British
Museum. While we were at the museum we visited
the Egyptian exhibit.
We saw many elegant statues and decorations from
the Ancient Egyptian era, and even saw a tomb! We
were mainly at the museum to visit the
Aztec exhibit, Room 27. We had to fill in questions
about the room such as: what materials were the
sculptures made of and what animals did the Aztecs
show in their early drawings/sculptures.
There were masks in the room that were used as
decoration that were just like the masks we had been
creating in Art Class.

Cold Weather Clothing
Over the coming weeks, the cold weather will
start to creep in. Please ensure that children do
not leave home without a coat, hat and gloves
on cold days. All clothing must be labelled
clearly. On snowy days, children can wear
wellingtons or boots, as long as they have
school shoes with them to change into. The
classrooms get very warm and children will be
too hot in in boots all day.
Please also remember that children are welcome
to take advantage of free porridge every day of
the week. This is served between 8.40am and
8.50am.
However, children will not be admitted in to
school before this time for health and safety and
insurance reasons. Your support is appreciated.
Poppy Appeal 2017
The first Poppy Appeal was held in 1921, the
founding year of The Royal British Legion. Red
silk poppies, inspired by the famous First World
War poem In Flanders Fields, sold out instantly
and raised more than £106,000. The funds
helped WW1 veterans find employment and
housing after the war.
This year the children raised £57.40 by
purchasing poppies in school. Thank you for
your support.

Stillness Children take to the Ballot Box
The Learning Council recently met to discuss an
official name for our new reading shack. After
discussion the Learning Council agreed on three
names; Stillness Snug, Book Beach or Stillness
Story Shed.
The Learning Council then campaigned to the
rest of the children during school assembly.
Reasons were given why they should vote for a
particular name and the election date was set.
On Wednesday, 15 November 2017, the children
took to the polls to vote.
The official adjudicator from the Learning
Council counted the votes and we are pleased to
announce that our new outdoor reading area will
be called the Stillness Snug.

Pupils Returning to School on Crutches
Before accepting a pupil back into school on
crutches, the school will require a letter from a
medical professional (GP, Hospital, Clinic)
outlining exactly what injury or suspected injury
has been sustained.
The letter MUST provide the school with details
of whether the pupil requires any reasonable
adjustments to be made whilst in school and for
how long they may be needed. The letter should
also include information about whether the pupil
is able to weight bear and any limitations.
Health & Safety: Without this clear medical
information, the school is unable to assess the
levels of risks involved and therefore unable to
complete a suitable risk assessment. The risk
assessment will cover all aspects of the pupil’s
day.
A risk assessment is a pre-requisite for any pupil
returning to school after an injury.
A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan will also
be completed and both documents will be
prepared prior to the pupil returning to school.
The pupil must have received training in the use
of crutches from a medical professional.
It is unacceptable for any pupil to arrive at
school with crutches that they have obtained
from means other than a medical/professional
establishment. These pupils pose a risk to
themselves and other pupils and employees
and this could potentially put the school at
risk.

Stillness Snug
We had a ‘Totally Amazing Bonkers’ morning with
the author Emer Stamp, who we invited to open our
new reading shack in the playground, named ‘The
Stillness Snug’.
After the grand opening, Emer ran a special
assembly for the whole school where she spoke
about her childhood, how she got the ideas for her
characters, and her love of writing diaries. She
showed us all how to draw three of her characters
and pointed out that you don’t need to be the best
writer or artist in the world to become an author,
you just need to have the ideas!
Emer then hung around our Library during
lunchtime to meet the children and sign books and
bookmarks.
We loved having her in the school and we hope it’s
inspired some of our amazing young authors to put
pen to paper this week! - Ruth Horsman –
School Librarian
Thank You
We would like to thank our wonderful school
librarian Ruth Horsman for organising the day and
for continuing to ensure the library is a welcoming
and vibrant place for the children to enjoy.
We would also like to say thank you to
Tallulah Noorbakhsh-Newton and Ciaran
Fitzpatrick from Y6, our school photographers for
the morning.
You can view some of the wonderful photographs
Tallulah and Ciaran took on our school website:

Calling all knitters and crotcheters!
St. Thomas’s Hospital has run out of bonding
squares on their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Bonding squares are pairs of 5 inch by 5 inch
knitted or crotchet squares (any colour, design, and
wool – please do be aware it needs to be washable
in a machine). One square is put with the poorly
baby, and the other square is with the parent, and
then these are swapped over daily. They are so
crucial for little superstar premature babies, or
poorly newborns and parents who are separated at
such a stressful time.
Please dig out your knitting needles and send them
to Neonatal Unit, St. Thomas Hospital,
Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7EH.
Thank you.

Curriculum Assemblies
Thank you to everyone who came along and
supported our recent curriculum class assemblies
and completed our feedback form.
The children work really hard to learn their lines
and dance moves; it is therefore very rewarding
when they can perform in front of such a large and
appreciative audience.
Miss Curtis “Read of the Month:-
The Suitcase Kid in this story is Andy, whose real
name is Andrea. She's a tall, awkward 10-year-old
whose parents have recently divorced. Her dad
wants her to live with him... and her mum wants
her to live with her, so it's a difficult situation for
Andy who's stuck in the middle.
Andy wishes that her parents would get back
together so that the three of them can move back to
their little house, Mulberry Cottage, where there's a
lovely mulberry tree in the garden.
Andy's forced to spend one week with her mum and
one week with her dad, which means she ends up
having to live out of her suitcase. Not surprisingly,
she starts to get bad marks at school and loses
touch with her best friend. The only thing to cheer
her up is her little stuffed rabbit, Radish.
One day, Andy finds a secret garden with
mulberries growing in it and she goes there after
school. When she accidentally drops Radish down
inside a tree and can't get her out, she has to creep
out of the house in the middle of the night to rescue
her rabbit. Is she going to lose her beloved Radish,
as well as her mum and dad?
Dinner Money
The dinner money from 3 January 2018 to
9 February 2018 will be £56.70. Can
parents/carers please make every effort to pay in
advance.
To improve the service we provide, Stillness Junior
School will no longer accept cash or cheques as
payment.
This can be done online using a very secure
website called ParentPay. You all have your
individual ID and Password to access this facility.
Please note: if you wish to change your child
from packed lunch to school dinners or vice
versa please inform the school office in writing
to avoid being charged. Children can only
change this option at half term break.
Please Note: Dinner accounts that are more
than one week overdue or in arrears will result
in your child having to bring in a packed lunch
or going home for their lunch.
Stillness Junior School Website
We are pleased to inform parents/carers that we
work extremely hard to ensure that our website is
up to date. Please take a minute to have a look and
catch up with the latest news and holiday dates. If
you do not wish photographs of your child/ren
to be posted on this website, in the school
newsletter or in articles that may be published
in the press, please notify the school office in
writing.
