Mission

The Mission of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program is to be the most effective

prevention and recovery program helping young people and families avoid or

recover from the devastating effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

Vision

Our Vision is to provide free prevention and long-term drug and alcohol

recovery programs of the highest quality that are readily accessible to

Houston area youth and their families who may benefit from these services.

The Program

is administered with the highest level of integrity;

is free to all participants;

is spiritually based on the twelve-steps of recovery; and

provides recreational and social rehabilitation activities in a safe, sober environment.

From the CEO & President

On behalf of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program ( PDAP ) , I am proud to

share with you the highlights of another outstanding year in the life of PDAP

in this community. PDAP is the leading adolescent substance abuse recov-

ery provider in the Greater Houston area. For the past 46 years, we have

responded to the needs in our community by offering free recovery services

to the youth and families in the Houston area and provided education, inter-

vention, and prevention programs to area schools, businesses and church-

es throughout the community through our outreach services.

The on-going support we receive from our dedicated and committed Board

of Trustees, along with the community support of foundations, churches, in-

dividuals, and businesses is a true blessing to PDAP. Without such a

strong support system, we would not be able to continue fighting the effects

of substance abuse by offering these essential recovery services free of

charge to the young people and their families who so desperately need our

help. It is only through the generosity and support of the Houston commu-

nity that we are able to fulfill our mission of being the most effective sub-

stance abuse recovery program for young people and parents in the Hou-

ston area.

This has been a wonderful year for the Palmer Drug Abuse Program and

we are looking forward to an even better one in 2017.

Together we are making a difference….It works and it ’ s free !

History

The Palmer Drug Abuse Program ( PDAP ) was started in 1971 in Hou-

ston, Texas when a man named Bob Meehan, who was a recovering ad-

dict, built a relationship with Father Charlie Wyatt-Brown, the rector at

Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church. They developed a vision to reach lost

youth with substance abuse issues and bring them into a new, sober life-

style.

PDAP has been so successful that it has been replicated in nine cities in

the US, seven of which are in Texas.

Research & Research Award 2016 Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP) has been the focus of multiple research studies conducted by research teams representing multiple universities (Baylor University, Vanderbilt University, Sam Houston State University, University of Houston, Texas A & M, and University of Texas). Some of the completed research has been published and many in top tier journals. One article was published in Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation and in September 2016, this article was recognized by the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling (AARC) Research Committee as the re-cipient of the 2015 CORE Visibility Article of the Year Award. Innovative School Program In 2016, the 2015 piloted school/PDAP program, known as the After -school Peer Group (APG) program, was extended to provide services for 2016-2017 school year. The continuing partnership with Spring Branch ISD (SBISD) and the PaRC (Memorial Hermann Prevention & Recovery Center) provided expanded services to all the SBISD middle school and high school campuses. Generation Found The Generation Found documentary (GFD) was filmed in Houston and focuses on the continuum of care of adolescent recovery in Houston. PDAP is featured in the film that gives hope to those in our nation that are struggling with the youth, drug abuse epi-demic. PDAP is recognized as the first adolescent recovery program in the nation. We are honored to be a part of the national youth addiction recovery revolution in Houston. In 2016, the clients PDAP served were able to maintain an 82% sobriety rate. PDAP continued through sustained contributions from the community to provide all

core services free of charge to the members.

Making a Contribution

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

PDAP relies on contributions from the community to continue providing free drug recovery ser-

vices to the youth and families throughout the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area. There are

many ways that you can help the PDAP Program through donations of time, money, on-line

donations, stock, vehicle donations, company matching gift funds, in-kind donations such as

office supplies and recreational equipment, and through the many matching gift opportunities

provided by local grocery stores or internet shopping sites. Below is a listing of ways that you

can contribute to PDAP.

More than 85% of contributions go directly to support the free drug and alcohol recovery ser-

vices provided to the youth and families struggling with substance abuse in our community.

We accept donations at any time during the year...all of which are tax-deductible.

You may also use the form below and mail your donation to the attention of Dr. Danielle Lutz

Stories of Hope Through Recovery

PDAP is my safe place, this is where I come to find solutions to my problems with the help of my counselors and

peers. The counselors have always showed me unconditional love and support no matter what I have done or how

I have acted. PDAP is where I meet sober friends and receive feed-back I may not want to hear at the moment but

eventually really helps me out in the long run. PDAP is where I grow and remain teachable. There is almost no

other place in the world that I feel safer to come and to be than PDAP. – Female, 17 years old

PDAP gives me a place to come and find fellowship and friends. It gives me a place to feel loved and accepted.

PDAP helps keep me sober and sane. Every time I come here I feel safe like I can talk openly and not feel judged.

Without PDAP I don’t think I would be sober right now. I consider PDAP to be part of my family. – Male, 16 year

old

It feels welcoming and a fun place to vent in a healthy way. I can also hear other’s stories and learn from them. –

Male, 15 years old

PDAP has helped me stay sober and find a sponsor. I would have not be able to get sober without PDAP. It has

also helped me find friends that are sober and help me when I need advice or someone to tell me how it is without

sugar coating it. It has helped me become a better person all around, of course I’m not perfect, but I get better

with the help of PDAP and my friends. - Female, 16 years old

I learned of PDAP from a rehab facility my son was in. At that time, I was in crisis mode; I knew I needed help for

my son when he got out; back into the world in which I believed got him in rehab. I had no idea what a life chang-

ing experience it would be for both us. I started going to the PDAP parent meetings before he was able to attend

his peer meeting. I was sure I was going to learn how to fix him. To my surprise, with the help of staff and the oth-

er parents, I learned how to work on myself, which, in turn taught me to be there for my son in a healthy manner,

how to walk the walk rather than talk the talk, mirror if you will, what I asked of him. My Son started attending

PDAP meetings about one month later. Our meetings were separate however in the same building at the same

time. He is able to have individual counseling and we have family counseling sessions which have been amazing

for us, and, at no cost, by licensed staff. PDAP also gives him separate hang out times so that he is in an environ-

ment where he is able to be with others that learned how to have fun “sober”. We have been in PDAP, attending

meetings regularly now for more than 4 ½ years. The tools PDAP has given me and my son are something I could

have never imagined. There is always someone there to help me and or him. Today my life is one I never knew of.

I am a much better person for my son and others in my life due to all I got from my parent meetings and the same

is true for him. I am a pdarent, my son is a pdaper, and we live a life of recovery because that’s what we learned,

recovery is a lifestyle and it works if you work it! – Parent

We started our journey in PDAP when our daughter was a 9th grader about six years ago. We have always felt

comfortable in PDAP and during this time we have learned a lot. We've been shown ways to stop the chaos that

was going on in our house and ways to support our daughter that were healthy for her and for us. –Parent
