Safety Precautions andWorking Techniques

&anlgl

Because a brushcutter is, a high-speed, fast-cutting• power tool, special safety

precautions must be obseNed to reducethe risk of personal injury.

It is important that youread, fully understandand obseNe the followingsafety precautions and

warnings. Read the owner's manual andthe safety instructions periodically. Careless or improper use of any brushcuttermay cause serious or fatal injury.

Have your STIHL dealer show you howto operate your brushcutter. ObseNe allapplicable local safety regulations, standards and ordinances.

Warning! The use of any brushcutter may behazardous. If the rotating cutting 1001comes in contact with your body, it willcut you. When it comes in contact withsolid foreign objects such as rocks orbits of metal, it may fling them directly orby ricochet in the direction of bystandersor the operator.

Striking such objects could damage thecutting attachment and may causeblades to crack, chip or break.STIHL does not recommend the use ofrigid blades when cutting in stony areas.Thrown objects or damaged blades mayresult in serious or fatal injury to theoperator or bystanders.

6

Warning!Minors should never be allowed to usea brushcutter. Bystanders, especiallychildren, and animals should not beallowed in the area where a brushcutteris in use.

Never let the brushcutter run unattended.

Warning!Do not lend or rent your brushcutterwithout the owner's manual. Be surethat anyone using your brushcutter understands the information contained inthis manual.

Most of these safety precautions andwarnings apply to the use of all STIHLbrushcutters. Different models may havedifferent parts and controls. See theappropriate section of your owner'smanual for a description of the controlsand function of the parts of your modelbruShcutter.

Safe use of a brushcutter involves1. the operator2. the brushcutter3. the use of the brushcutter.

THE OPERATOR!

Physical Condition

You must be in good physical conditionand mental health and not under theinfluence of any substance (drugs, alcohol, etc.) which might impair vision, dexterity or judgment. Do not operate abrushcuJter when you are fatigued.

Be alert - if you get tired while operatingyour brushcutter, take a break.Tiredness may result in loss of control.Working with any brushcutter can bestrenuous. If you have any condition thatmight be aggravated by strenuous work, check with your doctor before operatinga brushcutter.Prolonged use of a brushcutter (or othermachines) exposing the operator tovibrations may produce whitefinger disease (Raynaud's phenomenon) or carpal tunnel syndrome. These conditionsreduce the hand's ability to feel and regulate temperature, produce numbnessand burning sensations and may causenerve and circulation damage and tissuenecrosis.

WarnlnglAntivibration systems do not guaranteethat you will not sustain whitefinger disease or carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore, continual and regular usersshould monitor closely the condition oftheir hands and fingers. If any of theabove symptoms appear, seek medicaladvice immediately.

Proper Clothing

(i Warning!Brushcutter operation can

0·0 cause serious injury to eyes, ears and person. The de

flector provided with your brushcuttermay not protect the operator from allforeign objects (gravel, glass, wire, etc.)thrown by the wheeling cutting attachment. Thrown objects may also ricochetand strike the operator. Therefore, to reduce the risk of injury to your eyes neveroperate a brushcutter unless wearinggoggles or properly fitted safety glasseswith adequate top and side protectioncomplying with ANSI Z 87.1 (or your applicable national standard).

To reduce the risk of injury to your faceSTIHL recommends that you also weara face shield or face screen over yourgoggles or safety glasses.WarnIng!Brushcutter noise may damage yourhearing. Wear sound barriers (ear plugsor ear mufflers) to protect your hearing.Continual and regular users should havetheir hearing checked regularly.

Wear proper protective clothing.Protect your hands with gloves whenhandling the brushcutter and the cuttingtooi. Heavy-duty, nonslip gloves improveyour grip and protect your hands.

Clothing must be sturdy and snug·fitting, but allow complete freedom of movement. Avoid loose-fitting jackets, scarfs, neckties, jewelry, flared or cuffed pants, unconfined long hair or anything thatcould become caught on branches, brush Of- moving parts of the unit. Wearlong' pants made of heavy material toprotect your legs. Do not wear shorts.

Good footing is most important inbrushcutter work. Wear sturdy bootswith nonslip soles. Steel-toed safetyboots are recommended. Wear anapproved safety hard hat to reduce therisk of injury to your head when there isa danger of head injuries.

Warning'Never modify a brushcutter in any way.Only attachments supplied by STIHL orexpressly approved by STIHL for usewith the specific STIHL brushcuttermodels are authorized. Although certainunauthorized attachments are useablefor the STIHL brushcutter, their usemay, in fact, be extremely dangerous.

THE USE OF THE BRUSHCUTIER

For illustrations and definitions of thebrushcutter parts see the chapter on"Parts and Controls"!

THE BRUSHCUTIER

Transporting the brushcutterWarning!Always turn off the engine and makesure the cutting attachment has stopped before putting a brushcutter down. When transporting your brushcutter in avehicle, properly secure it to preventturnover, fuel spillage and damage tothe brushcutter. Keep metal cuttingtools covered with the transport guard(optional accessory).

Preparation for the use of thebrushcutterAdjust carrying harness and hand gripto suit your size before starting work. The machine should be properlybalanced as specified in your owner'smanual for proper control and lessfatique in operation.

Always check your bruhcutter forproper condition and operation beforestarting, particularly the throttle trigger, throttle trigger interlock (if applicablestop switch, cutting tool, deflector andharness.

Arrows on the deflector (A) and stop (8)show the correct direction of rotation ofthe cutting tool.

The throttle trigger must move freelyand always spring back to the idleposition. The cutting tool must beproperly tightened and in safe operatingcondition. Inspect for loose parts (nuts, screws, etc.) and for cracked, bent, warped or damaged blades.

Fueling

Your STIHL brushcutter uses an oilgasoline mixture for fuel (see the chapter on "Fuel" of your owner's manual).

Warning!

Gasoline is an extremely flammable fuel.Ir spilled or ignited by a spark or otherignition source, it can cause fire andserious burn injury or property damage.Use extreme caution when handlinggasoline or fuel mix.

Do not smoke or bring any fire or flamenear the fuel.

8

Page 10: STIHL FS 88, 108 Owners Instruction Manual - stihlusa.com

Fueling Instructions

Fuel your brushcutter in well-ventilatedareas, outdoors.

rntng l

Gasoline vapor pressure may build upinside the gas tank of a two cycle enginedepending on the fuel used, the weathercondition, and the venting system of thetank. In order to reduce th risk ofpersonal injury from escaping gas vaporand fumes, remove the fuel filler cap onyour brushcutter carefully so as to allowany pressure build-up in the tank torelease slowly. Never remove fuel fillercap while engine is running. Select bareground for fueling and move at least 10feet (3 m) from the fueling spot beforestarting the engine. Wipe off any spilledfuel before starting your brushcutter andcheck for leakage.

. arnmg!Check for fuel leakage while refuelingand during operation. If fuel or oilleakage is found, do not start or run theengine until leak is fixed and spilled fuelhas been wiped away. If this happens, change your clothing immediately.

~Warning!

J1~'\ Unit vibrations can.( cause an Improperly

tightened fuel cap toloosen or come off andspill quantities of fuel. In order to reducerisk of fuel spillage and fire, tighten fuelcap by hand with as much force as

possible. The screw driver end of theSTIHL combination wrench or othersimilar tool can be used as an aid intightening slotted fuel caps.

Starting

Warning!Your brushcutter is a oneperson machine. Once started it may fling foreign objekts for a great distance.

To reduce the risk of eye and other injuryinsure that bystanders are at least 50feet (15 m) away. Stop the engine andcutting tool immediately if you areapproached. Start and operate yourbrushcutter without assistance. Forspecific starting instructions, see theappropriate section of your manual.Place the brushcutter on firm ground orother solid surface in an open area.Maintain a good balance and securefooting.

To reduce the risk of injury from loss ofcontrol, be absolutely sure that the cutting tool is clear of you and all otherobstructions and objects, including theground, because when the engine startsat starting-throttle, engine speed will befast enough for the clutch to engage andturn the cutting tool.

'-When you pull the starter grip, don'twrap the starter rope around your hand.Do not allow the grip to snap back, butguide the starter rope to rewind properly.Failure to follow this procedure mayresult in injury to hand or fingers andmay damage the starter mechanism.

Before cutting, inspectthe area for stones, glass, pieces of metal, trash orother solid objects. The

cutting attachment could throw objectsof this kind.

~.To reduce the

. risk of injuryfrom thrownobjects andblade contact,

never operate a brushcutter without aproperly mounted deflector. Keep theskirt on the deflectors adjusted properlyat all times (see chapter on mounting thevarious cutting tools of your owner'smanual). Do not overreach. Keep properfooting and balance at all times.

Working Conditions

Operate and start your brushcutter onlyoutdoors in a ventilated area. Operatethe brushcutter under good visibilityand daylight conditions only. Workcarefully.

Always hold the brushcutter firmly withboth hands. Wrap your fingers tightlyaround the handles, keeping the handles cradled between your thumb andforefinger. Keep your hands in this position, to have your brushcutter under control at all times. Make sure your brushcutter handles and grip are in good condition and free of moisture, pitch, oil orgrease.

10

Warningl

Never attempt to operate any brushcutter with one hand. Loss of control ofthe brushcutter resulting in serious orfatal injury may result. To reduce the risk of bodily injuryresulting from loss of control and contactwith the cutting tool, make sure your unif':is equipped with the proper handle anaharness for the type of cutting attachment being used (see chart in chapteron "Selecting the Cutting Tool").

Special care must be taken in slipperyconditions (wet ground, snow) and indifficult, over-grown terrain. Watch forhidden obstacles such as tree stumps, roots and ditches to avoid stumbling.

Waming'This brushcutter is normally to be usedat ground level with the cutting attachment parallel to the ground. Use of abrushcutter above ground level or withthe cutting attachment perpendicular tothe ground may increase the risk ofinjury, since the cutting attachment ismore fully exposed and the brushcuttermay be more difficult to control. Neveruse your brushcutter as a hedgetrimmer.

Page 12: STIHL FS 88, 108 Owners Instruction Manual - stihlusa.com

W mmg! When using rigid blades, avoid cuttingclose to fences, sides of buildings, treetrunks, stones or other such objectsthat could cause the brushcutter to kickout or could cause damage to theblade. STIHL recommends use of thenylon line heads or Polycut head forsuch jobs. In addition, be alert to anincreased possibility of ricochets insuch situations.

Do not operate using the startingthrottle lock as you do not have controlof the engine speed. See section of yourowner's manual on the proper use of theslide control.

If the cutting tool or deflector becomesclogged or stuck, always turn off theengine and make sure the cutting toolhas stopped, before cleaning. Grass, weeds, etc. should be cleaned off thecutting tool at regular intervals.

Warning!During CUlling, check the tightness andthe condition of the cutting tool atregular intervals. If the behavior of thetool changes, stop the engine immediately, and check the nut securingthe tool for tightness and the cutting toolfor cracks and damage.

Replace cracked, bent, warped, damaged or dull cutting tools immediately.Such tools may shatter at high speedand cause serious or fatal injury.

Warn'ng'A loose blade may cause the blade tovibrate, crack, break or come off thebrushcutter, which may result inserious or fatal injury. Make sure thatthe blade is properly tightened. Use thewrench supplied or one of sufficientlength to obtain the proper torque. If theblade loosens after being properlytightened, stop work immediately. Theretaining nut may be worn or damagedand should be replaced. Never useunauthorized parts to secure the blade. If the blade continues to loosen, seeyour STIHL dealer. Never use abrushculler with a loose blade.

Important adjustments

amlng'To reduce the risk of personal injury fromloss of control or contact with the running grass cutting blade, do not use agrass cutting blade with incorrect idleadjustment. At correct idle speed, thegrass cutting blade should not move. For directions to adjust idle speed, seethe appropriate section of your owner'smanual.

If you cannot set the correct idle speed, have your STIHL dealer check yourbrushcutter and make properadjustments or repairs.

Waming'Never touch a rotating cutting tool withyour hand or any part of your body. Itcontinues to rotate for a short periodafter the throttle trigger is released(flywheel effect).

Do not cut any material other thangrass, brush and wood. The cuttingtools may be used only for theoperations described in your manual.

With the engine running, attach thebrushcutter to the spring hook of yourharness (see appropriate chapter of thismanual).

USING THE CUTTING TOOLS

For an illustration of the various cuttingtools and instructions on proper mounting see the chapter on "mounting thecutting tools" in your owner's manual.

Using the mowing heads

The STIHL Supercut, Autocut, Polymaticand Polycut mowing heads produce aclean and tidy finish.

They are to be used only on brushcutters equipped with a chopper blade inthe deflector in order to keep the line atthe proper length (see "Parts andControls" chapter of this manual).

If the lawn edges are planted with treesor bordered by a fence etc.. it is best touse a nylon line head. It achieves a"softer" cut with less risk of damagingtree bark than with the polymer blades.

However, the polymer bladed STIHL"Polycut" produces a better cut if there

are no plants along the edge of the lawn.Sharpening is not necessary and worncutting blades are easily replaced.

Warnmg! To reduce the risk of serious injury.never use wire or metal-reinforced line

"':-- or other material in place of the nyloncutting lines. Pieces of wire could breakoff and be thrown at high speed towardthe operator or bystanders.

STIHL "Supercut" mowing headFresh line is advanced automatically.Frayed line is replaced by a simpleadjustment (see instruction sheetsupplied with mowing head).

when it has worn as far as one of thesemarks. It is important to follow themaintance instructions supplied withthe head!

Using the grass cutting blade

All kinds of grass and weeds can beeasily cut with the cutting blade. Thebrushcutter is swept in anarcsimiliar to a scythe.

WarmnglTo reduce the risk of serious or fatalinjury never attempt to cut woodymaterials.

The 4-tooth grass cutting blade isintented to cut grass and weeds. It has 4 cutting knives with cutting edgeson both sides, i.e. front and rear.

The 8-tooth grass cutting blade isrecommended for cutting fern or reed.

'-Both bjades have to be resharpenedwhen all cutting edges are dull.

13

Page 15: STIHL FS 88, 108 Owners Instruction Manual - stihlusa.com

Using the brush knife

When fitted to the brushcutter, thebrush knife is suitable for applicationsranging from cutting matted grass toclearing weeds, wild growth and scrub.

To cut wild growth and scrub, lower therotating brush knife down onto thegrowth to achieve a chopping effect.Use the brushcutter like a scythe to cutgrass, i.e. sweep it to and fro in an arc.

Warning! When cutting woody materials, use theleft side of the blade to avoid "kickout"(blade thrust) situations.

14

Warnlngl

Improper use of a brush knife maycause it to crack, chip or shatter. Thrownparts may seriously injure the operatoror bystanders. To reduce the risk ofpersonal injury it is essential to take thefollowing precautions:Avoid contact with hard or solid foreignobjects such as stones, rocks or piecesof metal.Never cut wood or shrubs with a stemdiameter of more than 2cm (3/4") -use a circular saw blade for such work.Inspect the brush knife at regular shortintervals for signs of damage. Do notcontinue working with a damaged brushknife. Resharpen the brush knife regUlarly (when it has dulled noticeably).

Warning!

When cutting young saplings or otherwoody materials up to 2cm (3/4") indiameter, use left side of the blade toavoid "kickout" situations (seeappropriate section in this manual). Donot attempt to cut woody material with alarger diameter, since the blade maycatch or jerk the brushcutter forward. This may cause damage to the blade orbrushcutter or loss of control of thebrushcutter, resulting in personal injury

Page 16: STIHL FS 88, 108 Owners Instruction Manual - stihlusa.com

To redUce the risk of serious injuryto the operator or bystanders by akickout, never use a circular saw bladeon a brushcutter with a loop handle.

by experienced operators with specialized training in use and control of thebrushcutter.

amlnglThe risk of kickout is highest whencutting in the darker shaded area. Toreduce the risk of kickout and resultinginjury, do not use this area of thecircular saw blade for cutting trees orshrubs. Special techniques using thelighter shaded areas of the blade to cutshrubs and trees should only be used

Before starting the cut, accelerate theengine up to full throttle. Perform cutwith uniform pressure. STIHL recommends that the circular saw blade beapplied to the right of the tree, usingthe non-shaded area of the blade.

Warning'In order to reduce the risk of injury fromthrown objects or from operatorcontact with the cutting tool, be sure toremount the standard deflector for allother u·ses.

positioned against the tree during thecutting process. Inexperienced usersshould place the left side of the stopagainst the tree trunk before beginningto cut. This act will keep the brushcutter against the tree during thecutting operation and will reduce therisk of loss of control and possiblekickout (described in the followingsection).

<D

Using the circular saw blade

Circular saw blades are suitable forthinning brush and cutting small trees upto a diameter of 7 cm (23/4 in). Do notattempt to cut trees with largerdiameters, since the blade may catch orjerk the brushcutter forward. This maycause damage to the blade or loss ofcontrol of the brushcutter which mayresult in serious injury.

When the brushcutter with circular sawblade is used to cut down small trees,STIHL recommends that the standarddeflector be removed and replaced bythe special "stop" (see chapter "circularsaw blade" for mounting instructions). This stop helps to keep the brushcutter

Risk of "kickout" (blade thrust)with all rigid cutting blades

Warningl

Kickout (blade thrust) is the sudden anduncontrolled motion towards the operator's right or rear that can occur whenthe shaded area of the rotating bladecomes in cont<;:lct with a solid object likea tree, rock, bush or wall. The rapid counterclockwise rotation of the blade maybe stopped or slowed, and thecutting attachment may be thrown in anarea to the right or to the rear.

16

This kickout (blade thrust) may causeloss of control of the brushcutter andmay result in serious or fatal injury to theoperator or bystanders. To reduce therisk, extreme caution should be usedwhen cutting with the shaded area ofnay rigid blade and never use a rigidblade on a brushcutter with a loophandle.

MAINTENANCE, REPAIR ANDSTORING

Use only identical STIHL replacementparts for maintenance and repair.Use of parts manufactured by othersmay cause serious or fatal injury.

Follow the maintenance and repairinstructions in the appropriate section ofyour owner's manual. Please refer to themaintenance chart at the last pages ofthis manual.

arnmglAlways stop the engine and make surethat the cutting tool is stopped before doing any maintenance or repair work orcleaning the brushcutter. Do not attemptany maintenance or repair work notdescribed in your owner's manual. Havesuch work performed at yourSTIHLservice shop only.

Never repair damaged cutting attachments by welding, straightening ormodifying the shape. This may causeparts of the cutting tool to come off andresult in serious or fatal injuries.

Page 18: STIHL FS 88, 108 Owners Instruction Manual - stihlusa.com

Check condition of culling tool at regularshort intervals. If behavior of toolchanges, check it immediately fortightness or any signs of cracks in particular. Replace damaged or dull cUllingtools immediately, even if they have onlysuperficial cracks. If the blade loosensafter being properly tightened, theretaining nut may be worn or damagedand should be replaced. If the bladecontinues to loosen, see your STIHLdealer. Do not attach any blade to a unitwithout proper installation of all requiredparts. Never use unauthorized parts tosecure the blade. Failure to use theproper parts may cause the blade to flyoff and seriously injure the operator orbystanders.

Check fuel filler cap for leaks at regularintervals. Use the specified spark plugand make sure it and the ignition leadare always in good condition.Warning!Do not operate your brushcutter if themuffler is damaged, missing or modefied. An improperly maintained mufflerwill increase the risk of fire and hearingloss. Never touch a hot muffler or burnwill result. If your muffler was equippedwith a spark-arresting screen to reducethe risk of fire (e.g. in the USA, Canadaand Australia), never operate your hedgetrimmer if the screen is missing or damaged. Remember that the risk of forest fires is greater in hot or dry weather.

Warning! In order to reduce the risk of fire, do notmodify or remove any part of the muffleror spark arrestor.

Keep cutting tool sharp. Tighten all nuts, bolts and screws except the carburetoradjustment screws after each use.

Keep spark plug and wire connectiontight and clean. The spark plug electrodegap should be checked with a feelergauge at least every 50 operating hoursand reset if necessary. Fit a new sparkplug if the electrodes are badly pilled.

Store brushcutter in a dry, high or lockedlocation place and out of reach ofchildren. Before storing for longer than a fewdays, always empty the fuel tank.

WarnlnglKeep hands and feet away from cUllingtool.

Fuel

Your two-stroke engine requires amixture of brand-name gasoline andquality two-stroke engine oil with theclassification Te.Use regular branded unleaded gasolinewith a minimum octane number of90 ROZ (U.S.A./Canada: pump octanemin. 89!). If the octane number of theregular grade gasoline in your area islower us5=l premium unleaded fuel.Fuel with a lower octane number mayresult in preignition (causing pinging")which is accompanied by an increase inengine temperature. This, in turn, increases the risk of the piston seizureand damage to the engine.

The chemical composition of the fuel isalso important. Some fuel additives notonly detrimentally affect elastomers(carburetor diaphragms, oil seals, fuellines etc.), but magnesium castings aswell. This could cause running problemsor even damage the engine. For thisreason it is essential that you use onlyname branded fuels!

Use only STIHL two-stroke engine oil orequivalent branded two-stroke air-cooledengine oils with the classification TC formixing. We recommend STIHL 50:1 two-strokeengine oil since it is specially formulatedfor use in STIHl engines. The mix ratiowith STIHl oil is 50:1 (50 parts gasolineto 1 part oil), or 25:1 (25 parts gasoline to1 part oil) with other branded two-strokeair-cooled engine oils.

Do not use BIA or TCW (two-strokewater cooled) mix oils!Take care when handling gasoline.Avoid direct contact with the skin andavoid inhaling fuel vapour. The canister should be kept tightlyclosed in order to avoid any moisturegetting into the mixture. The fuel tank and the canister in whichfuel mix is stored should be cleanedfrom time to time.

Fuel mix ages:Only mix sufficient fuel for a few dayswork, not to exceed 30 days of storage.Store in approved safety fuel-canistersonly. When mixing, pour oil into thecanister first, and then add gasoline.

Turn the idle speed adjustingscrew (LA or LD) counterclockwiseuntil cutting tool stops rotating then back off screw aboutanother one half tum from thatposition.

Erratic idling behavior,poor acceleration

Idle setting is too lean.Turn the low speed adjustingscrew (L) counterclockwise untilengine runs and acceleratessmoothly.

Exhaust smokes at idle speed

Idle setting is too rich.Turn the low speed adjustingscrew (L) clockwise untilengine speed drops. Then turnscrew back one quarter turnand ch~k that engine stillacce'lerates smoothly whenyou open the throttle.

Operating Instructions

During break-in period

A factory new machine should not be runat high revs (full throttle off load) for thefirst three tank fillings. This avoids unnecessary high loads during the break-inperiod.

As all moving parts have to bed induring the break-in period, thefrictional resistances in the engineare greater during this period. The engine develops its maximumpower after about 5 to 15 tank fillings.

40

During operation

After long period of full-throttleoperation, allow engine to run for a whileat idling speed so that the heat in theengine can be dissipated by flow ofcooling air. This protects enginemounted components (ignition, carburetor) from thermal overload.

After finishing work

Storing for short period:To avoid condensation, fill the fueltank and keep the unit in a dry placeuntil you need it again.

Storing for a long period:Drain and clean the fuel tank run engine until carburetor is dry.

Check tightness of nuts and screws(not adjusting screws) at regularinteNals and retighten as necessary.
