Responding to Debt and Exclusion with Dr Andrew Orton This presentation will explore how Christians are responding to debt and financial exclusion in local communities, drawing particularly on interactive research funded by the Leech Research Fellowship between 2014-16 with churches and Christian charities across the North East of England and London. It will particularly consider ways that Christians can reflect theologically on money and debt, and how this might affect stewardship practices within the church as well as Christians’ wider social engagement on these issues. Andrew will distribute copies of his Money Talks Guide, but you can also access this at: bit.ly/Money-Talks-Guide In addition, the research report from the project is available at: bit.ly/Money-Talks
Dr Andrew Orton is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University, with experience of researching and working with churches, charities, national governmental and international organisations on issues related to faith, diversity and social action. He is also a Methodist, with experience of being Circuit Steward responsible for a group of local churches, so appreciates the joys and challenges this can bring!
Case Study: A local CAP Debt Centre with Jane PrestonThe session starts with a short presentation on the work of the Telford CAP debt centre – providing an illustration of the practical issues and benefits of practical local church engagement.
Jane Preston has been manager of the Telford CAP debt centre since its launch in October 2015 and leads a team of 30 volunteers from 10 churches.

He is a Chartered Company Secretary with an M.A. in Theology from Durham University whose 40 year career has spanned banking, construction and higher education sectors, including consultancy specialising in change-management and the implementation of risk management strategies.
A Journey of Generosity with Lee Behar and Gordon Randall.A Journey Of Generosity is a gathering that enables givers to explore God’s Word, watch stories of other inspirational givers, enjoy meals together, and ask God’s Spirit to show us how to use the money that He’s entrusted to us. Following last year’s conference, we’re exploring how this might work for the C of E.
Lee served as the Chief Operating Officer of Generous Giving before joining the staff of Generosity Path in 2015. Lee also serves at the Maclellan Foundation, which he joined in May, 2006. Gordon is Stewardship Advisor for the Diocese of Winchester, and chairs the Legacy Good Practice Group. He is also a Trustee of the Parish Giving Scheme.
Legacies with Nichola Sims, Training Manager at the Institute of Legacy Managment Nichola Sims has been the Training Manager at the Institute of Legacy Management since 2005, having worked in the charity sector since 1993. She was a member of the legacy administration teams at The Salvation Army, NSPCC and Diabetes UK, and provided consultancy service for numerous other charities such as Save the Children UK, Dogs Trust, Barnardo’s and Children’s Hospice South West. Nichola has a passion for ensuring that every charitable legacy achieves its greatest potential, honouring the wishes of the donor and helping the charity meet the needs of those it serves. “Generosity and Grace from Luke” with Bishop David WilliamsThis talk will cover three elements, with Bishop David bringing us the fourth and final element during the conference eucharist:1. Generosity and Grace. Luke 18:9-172. Generosity and Relationships. Luke 17:3-103. Generosity and Hospitality. Luke 14:7-24

A. Porcupines in the Parish with Jonathan Farnhill in Room AThis session will canter through some of the insights into giving that are in “The Porcupine Principle (and other fundraising secrets)”, a book published by the Directory of Social Change. We will look at how to inspire generosity, and how we can communicate persuasively and positively in order to do this.
Jonathan Farnhill has recently started as Generous Giving Adviser in the Diocese of Oxford and has worked in fundraising and leadership roles in charities for over 25 years. He has given talks and presentations on giving in the UK and abroad following the publication of “The Porcupine Principle”. Further information at www.farnhill.org.uk.
B. Developing Giving Leaflets – a working session in Room BThis is a practical session to develop new leaflets for congregational use. It is intended that these might be used alongside a parish booklet produced for a giving review, or in a stand alone capacity to accompany a talk or light-touch annual review. We will consider what parishes find most helpful and give some thought to developing leaflets that ultimately would be available for order through the Parish Resources website.

What kind of leaders are we? with Alison MaddocksAlison moved to Worcester Diocese in January 2017 to take up a full time role as Stewardship Officer. Prior to this she was a half-time Parish Priest and half Diocesan Leadership Officer in Derby Diocese for nearly six years. Her early career was spent working in Nottingham for Boots in Marketing and New Product Development before ending up in Personnel in a role as Career Development Manager for High Fliers. Having left the company to train for ordination, she did a conventional parish curacy followed by a time spent in full time workplace chaplaincy before moving to Derby.
Alison is thoroughly enjoying the Stewardship work for the way it brings together strands of discipleship and vocation, facilitation and leadership.

B. Mind your language! With Tom Brazier in Room AHave you ever noticed that we shoot ourselves in the foot with the language we use about Christian giving? Hopefully after this session you will notice it regularly and annoy people just as much as Tom does when he points it out. In love, of course!
