Sunday, October 15, 2017 Stewardship and Discipleship In 1992, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published a pastoral letter entitled “Stewardship: A Disciples Response”. In the letter, the bishops defined a Christian steward as one who: Receives God’s gifts gratefully Cherishes and tends God’s gifts responsibly Shares God’s gift in love and justice Returns God’s gift with increase Stewards recognize that God is the Creator of all and shares their gifts out of love for God and one another. Disciples as Stewards: A disciple is simply defined as a follower of Jesus Christ. As members of the Church, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to imitate His way of life. This has major implications: Mature disciples make a conscious decision to follow Jesus, no matter what it costs. Christian disciples experience a conversion and commit their very selves to the Lord. As Stewardship is part of discipleship, Christian stewards respond in a particular way to the call to be a disciple. Stewardship has the power to shape and mold our understanding of our lives and the way in which we live. What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly is one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent and treasure. But being a Christian steward means much more. As Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly and share them generously with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. As we recognize the presence of God in our lives, we set to live the spirituality of stewardship in terms of time, talent and treasure. As we prepare for our annual treasury campaign, we will focus on the theme of Stewardship of Treasure, what it means and why it is so important. Stewardship and Discipleship In 1992, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published a pastoral letter entitled “Stewardship: A Disciples Response”. In the letter, the bishops defined a Christian steward as one who:

Receives God’s gifts gratefully

Cherishes and tends God’s gifts responsibly

Shares God’s gift in love and justice

Returns God’s gift with increase

Stewards recognize that God is the Creator of all and shares their gifts out of love for God and one another.

Disciples as Stewards: A disciple is simply defined as a follower of Jesus Christ. As members of the Church, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to imitate His way of life. This has major implications:

Mature disciples make a conscious decision to follow Jesus, no matter what it costs.

Stewardship: A Way of Life…

“My God will supply whatever you need…” - Philippians 4:19

God really does provide for those who are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people that don’t live a stewardship lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it’s just coincidence. If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month – be generous with your gifts of time, talent and treasure and see how God provides for your needs.

Offertory Gift Bearers Sign-Up Since fall of 2015, parishioners have been given the opportunity to sign up as Gift Bearers to present the gifts of bread, wine, and monetary offerings during the Preparation of Gifts at weekend liturgies. Monthly sign-up sheets continue to be posted on the bulletin board in the sacristy hallway. If an individual or individuals, family, group or ministry (e.g. Scouts, IHM-St. Casimir School, Youth Group, etc.) wishes to bring up the gifts at a particular Sunday (Vigil) Mass, they may sign up in advance or even prior to Mass so long as the hospitality team has adequate notice.

We have received a minimal response to this effort, however, the Worship Commission would like to extend this procedure for another year. The original intent was designed to not only enable more parishioners to participate in this part of the Mass, but will also relieve the responsibility of hospitality ministers to continuously seek out people to fulfill this role. If no one signs up for a given liturgy, others will be solicited as in previous years.

Please contact Dave Wiseman at 517.393.3030 (#230) or [email protected] if you have questions or concerns regarding this process. We are always looking to improve our participation at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, so feedback regarding this protocol is appreciated.

All are WELCOME!

Why do Catholic Parishioners act as Offertory Gift Bearers?

The community offers bread and wine in the

memorial sacrifice of the Mass. Bread and

wine are presented as gifts to God, as

symbols of the work of human hands. This

allows members of the church who are not

able to participate in the other forms of

liturgical ministry a chance to play a role in the liturgy. When volunteers include a family

with children, it’s a special sight; one that

reminds us that parishioners of all ages are

important members of the body of Christ.

The Charism of Teaching The charism of teaching empowers a Christian to be a channel of God’s truth and wisdom by enabling others to learn information and skills that help them reach their fullest spiritual and personal potential.

Do people tell you that you help them learn new concepts or skills that have made a real difference in their lives? Do you enjoy learning new things and then really enjoy teaching others about it as well? Are you able to explain complicated things in a way that is clear, easy to remember and interesting? Do you get really excited to teach others anything and it almost feels like a prayer? Do you find yourself cooperating with God even in the midst of speaking, while you are teaching? These are some initial questions you can ask yourself if you are discerning whether or not you have a charism of teaching.

I believe that one of my charisms is teaching. I love to teach people things. Anything, but especially things about the faith. I call myself a “ChurchNerd” because I read Church documents like they are novels but it is because I want to have a deeper understanding of things so that I can better explain them to others. I believe Leah Hinman our director of RCIA and several bible studies and Fr John may have this charism as well—have you ever seen them when they are teaching? They are alive! And you “get” what they are trying to explain to you.

Now, some people are naturally gifted at teaching or maybe they have learned the skills for teaching. They may or may not have the charism of teaching. Remember our three ways of discerning: 1) we are unusually effective, 2) it feels like we are cooperating intimately with God in His work, or it feels like prayer, or our favorite way of expressing our faith and 3) we get feedback from others that what we set out to do with this gift was accomplished.

The Charism of Evangelism empowers a Christian to be an effective channel of God’s love by sharing the faith with others in a way that draws them to become disciples of Jesus and responsible members of His Church.

Do you enjoy sharing with non-Catholics the joy and peace which your Catholic faith has given you? Do you find yourself sharing your faith with those who have no Church background and you

see them have a desire to know more about your faith as result of your conversation with them? Is talking about Catholicism with those who have little understanding of it one of the most fulfilling and important things you can do? Do you find yourself wishing the Church would just go out into the streets and start telling people about Jesus? If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, you just might have a charism of evangelization!

Now, before you say “phew! I don’t have this gift, I don’t have to evangelize!!”, remember everyone is called to evangelize others because of your baptism – that is, God has given YOU specific gifts to enable you to bring Christ to others, but you also are called to have your “spiritual antennas “up at all

times in case the Holy Spirit is asking you to speak to someone. And a reminder, again, that we as a parish are committed to helping you grow in your ability to evangelize. It is why we as a parish exist – to bring Christ to the world!

St Francis Xavier (1506-1552) came to faith through St Ignatius of Loyola and thereafter joined the Jesuits which St Ignatius had founded. St Francis Xavier became one of the greatest evangelists ever. In 10 years he founded Churches in India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan. It is estimated that he baptized over 10,000 new Christians — in one month! Even when he was traveling to various places he would engage those running the ship in “apostolic conversations” – that is, starting up conversations with others about who Jesus was and helping them want to follow Jesus as his

disciple. A great quote of St Francis’ to remember is “Speak to them of the great mercy of God… Sometimes people are helped by your telling of your own lamentable past.”

St Vincent Pallotti (1795-1850) was a pioneer in the collaboration of lay people with the clergy in the work of evangelization. He was deeply worried about the passivity of the laity and he founded a group of priests and lay people

who were dedicated to awaken the zeal and charity of all the faithful in every state, rank and condition to serve the Catholic Apostolate – that is, evangelization. He had one simple guiding principal that we can all take on: “The love of Christ impels us”. Whether or not you have the specific charism of evangelization, let the love of Christ impel you to share the Gospel message with others. You might be the only Jesus others will ever meet!
