This is the theme of our stewardship reflections booklet which will be mailed to the parish at the end of September. Prepared by fellow parishioners, under the sponsorship of stewardship, it is part of our yearround effort of stewardship education. We have said that “stewardship is a spiritual act, reflecting our true relationship with God … that as members of the body of Christ, we are his feet and his hands in the world

today … that our pledges are the way that the mission of Trinity happens.” Paul wrote in the letter to Romans “Having gifts that differ according to thegrace given to us, let us use them.”

October is the month of the year when we consider our pledges to Trinity forthe next year. While there are many things we can say, write and educate aboutstewardship, our hope is for every member to prayerfully consider his or herown personal commitment to giving. As you prepare for your annual pledge on Stewardship Sunday November 5th, we offer a reflections booklet of dailyreadings and commentary by our parishioners, remembering that we learn stewardship best, by reading the Gospel and by listening to the experience of others.

This is an important month for stewardship, as we confirm our support for the ongoing ministries ofTrinity into 2007 and pledge our per-sonal commitment to the practice ofgiving and love for others in our lives.

Here is a summary of the stewardshipevents that will occur in the next fewweeks. Please make a note of themand plan to participate.

Anglican Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu writes in God Has a Dream:

"Like humility, generosity comes from seeing that everything we have andeverything we accomplish comes from God's grace and God's love for us.In the African understanding of ubuntu, our humility and generosity alsocome from realizing that we could not be alive, nor could we accomplishanything, without the support, love, and generosity of all the people whohave helped us to become the people we are today. Certainly it is fromexperiencing this generosity of God and the generosity of those in our lifethat we learn gratitude and to be generous to others."

My brothers and sisters, I want to take a momentto speak to an experience many of us had earlyin September. It is no surprise that summer is aseason of “low Sundays” for many Episcopalparishes in this region. It is a time of travel, vacations, rest, and for many a needed breakfrom the bustle of life during the program year.Still, I always welcome the return of the pro-gram year. Our sleepy sum-mer months give way to theexcitement of new begin-nings. Church School andYouth Group resume, with ahost of young folk filling thehallways with shouts of joy.Choir resumes for all ages. The Day School fills our hallsand playground with bustlingenergy throughout the week.It is a feeling not dissimilar to having theextended family arrive for a holiday visit. For an “off the chart” extrovert like me, THIS IS A SLICE OF HEAVEN!

One remarkable moment caught me completelyby surprise this year. On September 10th webegan our program year with the usual kickoffflair. Entering the liturgy, as I do at the end ofthe morning’s “parade” I saw a church that wasquite respectably full. Ardent voices filled thechurch with song. We had a strong balcony con-tingent. It was beautiful…and then at the Peace, the Church School entered…and that respectablenumber of folk quite literally doubled.

What was a lovely day of reunion and celebra-tion took on a new quality. Honestly, we haven’t

seen so many people in church this year sinceour Easter Day celebrations! There were peoplein the aisles, standing in the Narthex, on thestairs and in the open areas in the balcony. I wasimpressed and overwhelmed by the diversity ofage and personalities assembled, of the presenceof pure grace, that this place has and continuesto offer to the world.

For all of the challenges weface in the coming months—from Stewardship campaignsto building renovations andrepairs; from concerts to din-ners to meetings and forma-tion events, I see a churchthat is growing, glowing andgracing its wider communitywith the Good News of Godin Christ.

Years ago, I had a chance to hear ArchbishopTutu preach to the concept of ubuntu: that innatesense of humanity responding to itself withechoes of divine love. For me, Trinity is grow-ing in leaps and bounds as it embraces its ownversion of ubuntu. As you consider Trinity thisyear with regard to your offerings of time, talentand treasure, look to that same sense of thedivine revealed here throughout our worship lifeand service in outreach. Trinity is, once again, busting at the seams with energy and spirit. Let’scontinue that great work! God has been generousto us; let us respond with the greatest “AMEN”we can muster—with active gratitude and grateful hearts!

CALLING ALL ACOLYTES!!!2006 National Acolyte Festival

Saturday, October 7, 2006— Miles J. E. Gombosi

The 27th Annual National Acolyte Festival will be held in theWashington National Cathedral on Saturday, October 7, 2006.

Last year I attended the 26th Annual Acolyte Festival. It was agreat experience! There were 1,500 acolytes from all over theUnited States including Hawaii, Texas, Puerto Rico, California,Alaska, and Florida, as well as many other places. There was aprocession of colorful banners and vestments that lasted one hour to start the service. The service was a Eucharist similar toour service on Sunday morning.

If you have any questions, feel free to speak to me at Church orcall me at (215) 794-5706.

On October 27-29th, Trinity YouthGroup will spend a “spooky” weekendtogether on their annual fall retreat. As the last weekend in October, itonly makes sense that this year’stheme is Halloween. Almost 30young people and 8-10 adults willpack their bags and travel to a won-derfully reclusive camp, Mensch MillRetreat Center. Only a little morethan an hour from Trinity, this facilityoffers a great escape from the dailymayhem of school work, extracurricu-lar commitments and even cell

phones. It is through the retreats, especially the first one of the year, that friendships are made and thesense of community deepened withinTrinity Youth Group.

So, aside from some solace and bonding, what else happenson these youth retreats?Bonfires, storytelling, smallgroup discussions, spiritualexploration, art projects andlots of fun, food, free time, joy andlaughter. One of thehighlights of the week-end is the Saturdaynight party. All atten-dees are encouraged towear a costume in keep-ing with the theme of theweekend. There are alsogreat treats, activities and,of course, a talent show.

Time slips away quickly, and beforewe know it, the time arrives to returnhome. Though somewhat sleepdeprived, the youth and adults oftenfind themselves reluctant to say good-bye to the weekend’s events. Notonly has each person been changed bythe experience but the entire grouphas also been profoundly affected.

If you are a young person or adultwho has not yet consideredinvolvement in Trinity

Youth Group, please thinkabout participating in the fall

retreat. The relaxed and openatmosphere provides a per-fect setting to get to know aremarkable group of people.

For more information, pleasecontact Alex Austin, RetreatCoordinator, at 215-499-1525or [email protected].

Cookie Bake — Jean Evans

I can’t believe that it’s time to start thinking about Cookie Bake! I also can’tbelieve that Cookie Bake is 61 years old, older than most of us who worship atTrinity. Cookie Bake is just what its name implies: baked and decorated holi-day cookies. Last year our all-volunteer crew baked over 15,000 cookies thatwere packaged in one-pound boxes and sold at the Holiday Store in December.

What makes Cookie Bake so unique is not the cookies, although they are deli-cious and “you can’t eat just one.” It is not the money that is raised, althoughlast year we cleared over $6,000. Cookie Bake is unique in that it provides anopportunity for everyone at Trinity to spend a few hours socializing whilerolling and cutting out cookies or decorating them. Friendships are formedover green icing and Trinity history is passed down from generation to genera-tion. You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to pitch in and help.

Plan on joining us for one or more sessions. The schedule for this year is:Tuesday October 31 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Wednesday November 1 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.TYG Night 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.Thursday * November 2 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.Tuesday November 7 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Wednesday * November 8 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.Thursday November 9 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.*Includes evening hours

Own a piece of Cookie Bake HistoryAfter years of service to Cookie Bake, we are willing to part with historic metal tins.

They are free, on a first-come, first-served basis, provided they are replaced with a new

plastic sweater box. Look for the metal tin display in McArthur Hall beginning on

October 15th and pick up your piece of Cookie Bake History.

Looking for Balance?A More “Spiritual”Life?— Caroline McCarthy, Lay Assistant

“In communion with the Spirit and one another, we are called to recognize thespiritual lives of every member of Trinity, to assist one another in finding waysto enrich and nurture our spiritual practice, and to develop our ministries in this world.”

In a forum she led at Trinity last year, Kay Steinkirchner Rock, a professionalwriter now residing in Doylestown, PA, shared with us how moved she was byTrinity’s Vision Statement as printed on the wall in McArthur Hall.

Kay then offered a thoughtful expository reading of Trinity’s Vision, along with her thoughts elucidating the meaning she found in each phrase. Manyparishioners have asked about this reading. It is as follows:

In communion in sharing, in common, in participation

with the Spirit that spark of God’s energy, our aliveness, our soul, our “en theos” (in God) enthusiasms

and one another our journeys are not in isolation

we are called vocare: to call; what and how are we called to do?

to recognize to be present to: to hear; to see

the spiritual lives in all their diversity

of every member of Trinity each one a cell in the living organism of this parish

to assist one another symbol of the cross speaks to our relationship to our God (vertical axis) and to each other (horizontal axis)

in finding ways it is as much about the quest, the search, the journey as the answers

to enrich and nurture breadth of knowledge and depth of caring

our spiritual practice practice implies discipline and rigor

and to develop become perfect as in to mature, to ripen

our ministries in the world we are all ministers, here for a reason.

Amen.

Kay will be leading a forum here at Trinity next month entitled “Listening tothe Other: Hearing God’s Voice In Our Daily Encounters,” underscoringTrinity’s focus this year on the art of listening.

Expository Reading of Trinity’s Vision

Are you wishing you could somehowfind the time to learn a spiritual practice or two that might bring somebalance into your life? Or are youwondering, what exactly is a “spiritualjourney”?

The St. Thomas Choir School in New York City is the only church-affiliated residential choir school in the United States, and one of only four suchschools remaining in the world. Saint Thomas Choir School offers extensivemusical training and a rich curriculum for boys in grades three througheight, with class sizes averaging just eight students.

The Saint Thomas Choir is considered by critics to be the leading ensemblein the Anglican choral tradition in the United States, and among the finest inthe world. In the Gothic setting of Saint Thomas Church, the choir providesmusic for five choral services each week. Choral Evensong is sung Tuesdaythrough Thursday with Sunday services at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., aschedule which requires the preparation of approximately four hundredsacred choral works each year.

John Scott has been the director since 2004 and is one of the world’s leading organists and choir trainers. He was an Organ Scholar at St. John’sCollege, Cambridge and after leaving Cambridge was jointly appointedAssistant Organist at London’s two Anglican Cathedrals, St. Paul’s andSouthwark. Before coming to Saint Thomas he served as Director of Music at St. Paul’s Cathedral for fourteen years.

We are very fortunate to have this outstanding choral ensemble coming toTrinity. I would especially like to encourage our families with children andyouth to come hear this wonderful group. Please don’t miss this incredibleexperience. You won’t be disappointed. There is no admission charge forthis event. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Trinity’s annual commemoration of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi celebrates both the created world andthe animal companions with whom we share this life.Francis of Assisi was born in 1182 to a wealthy merchant family and spent most of his earlyyears as youth of his time were wont to: inleisure, sport and the pursuit of military glory. After experiencing encounters with lepers, the sick and the poor on his travels, he experi-enced a conversion to Christ that led him torenounce his earthly wealth and embrace“Lady Poverty.” In 1210, his community wasrecognized by Pope Innocent III, and the Orderof Friars Minor experienced popular growth inEurope. He died in 1226, bearing at that time themark of stigmata, the wounds of Christ. He was

canonized in 1228. Francis was known for his love ofGod’s creatures, and reminded his community to

treasure all beings. Trinity remembers Franciswith an annual Blessing of the Animals on thefirst Sunday in October with a service of 10:00a.m. Holy Eucharist on the parish’s upperlawn. This year, we also remember domesticanimals without homes with our regular offerings to support the local Animal Rescue

shelters. Bring a bag of animal feed to the service on October 1st and join in thanksgiving

with the Trinity community as we celebrate God’sblessings revealed in the created order.

For the past five years, Trinity’s Church SchoolProgram has dedicated three weeks to the studyand understanding of saints. Part of the educa-tion has included a deepened awareness thatsaints are not only those with whom we aremost familiar, such as the Virgin Mary andFrancis of Assisi, but also include people in our lifetime, even people we know. As contemporary theology has fostered a moreintimate relationship and connection with Christ, so it is in Christian access to saints and the saintly.

While all children in Pre-K through 3rd grade study saintsof yesteryear and today, they craft symbols for vests, repre-senting some aspect of the saint they have chosen. On AllSaints’ Day, Sunday, November 5, as children enter thesanctuary during the peace, they will wear their vests and

parade through the sanctuary. They may even sing a song about the saints before sitting withtheir parents.

Last year saints visited Church School class-rooms. Parishioners, such as Linda Kenyon andNancy Cullen, assume the persona of particularsaints, share their life story and, of course, fieldquestions. As always, parents and other churchmembers are welcome to stop into a classroom

and enjoy the experience as well.

All Saints’ Day provides a great opportunity for families totalk about saints and the inspiration that they provide all ofus in their commitment to faith and ministry. To learnmore, check out some helpful reading sources on saints onthe Trinity website and/or contact Marshall Shelly, KyleEvans or Lorri Perkins.

Participantsalso have ample quiet time to reflect on their personal andprofessional lives.

Each participant commits to extensive reflectionthrough pre-conference instruments and surveysthat focus on personal and professional wellness.

The work of CREDO is organized around fourmajor areas in each person’s personal and

professional life. Each of these components is exploredas an integral part of the whole.

• Spiritual – offers CREDO as a sacred space where each participant can reflect on his or her interior life and relationship with God in Christ.

• Vocational – provides opportunities for reflection, discernment and planning in the professional areas of vocation, career and work.

• Health – encourages reflection on physical and emotional health and well-being, stewardship of the body and development of a plan to address the individual’s health needs.

• Financial – explores all aspects of personal financialmanagement and encourages reflection on God-givenresources and how best to use them in response to God’s call.

Through this discernment and visioning process, and withthe help of a faculty team of professionals, each participantbuilds a CREDO Plan – a personal covenant based on hisor her CREDO work and a formal expression of theCREDO experience. The CREDO Plan provides a personalbaseline and strategy for effective implementation.

Give a Gift to the World — Michelle Summerson, Outreach Ministry

The Christmas season seems to start early at Trinity Church, as cookie bakebegins and Christmas symbols are pressed into cookie dough. Many of us putour holiday lists together, begin our shopping, and make plans for family visitsin the coming months. This season, why not give a gift to Mother Nature, orour neighbors in crisis around the world by choosing a gift from AlternativeGifts International?

Alternative Gifts International is a nonprofit interfaith agency that, throughcontributions to its gift markets, provides grants to established internationalprojects run by reputable agencies around the world. By participating in thisholiday Outreach tradition, each of us can help impoverished communitiesincrementally with hunger relief, shelter, medical assistance, education anddevelopment, and emergency disaster assistance. A gift of even $4, for example, can print one native-language textbook for a Haitian student. For just about $30, here’s just a sampling of what you can do:

- feed two families of four for one day in the poorest areas of the U.S.- provide a month of clean, safe shelter for a lost child in Kenya, or - supply milk and snack for a preschooler in Palestine for three months, or- provide nutritional supplementation for a pregnant impoverished woman in

Russia, or- help renew the natural resources of Haiti, a treeless nation, with the planting

of 30 trees, or- provide enterprise training and micro-credit for twelve “untouchable” women

in Nepal, or

A gift card describing your global good-doing is included with each donation, which can be personalized and given to your gift recipient. So, join together tohelp make a difference around the world! Look for Trinity’s Alternative GiftMarket in MacArthur Hall this advent season. For more information, contactSue Scholer or Jean Evans.
