President's Message...

Much has happened in the Colony in the past year. The Fourth of July and Halloween

parties were huge successes with record participation, the Garden Club rallied residents to

put out decorations for the holiday season and they beautified the entrance with flowers,

and initial surveying began for the dredging project. Each of these events was made

possible by the efforts of dozens residents who generously donated their time and talent.

It turns out that community participation and caring is a longstanding tradition and it's a

big factor in the feeling that you get when you live here. If you are new to the

neighborhood and haven't seen this in action, try this exercise: Pick a warm day or evening

and go for a walk together as a family. I guarantee that you won't get far before a neighbor

stops whatever he or she is doing and steps out into the street to say hi.

My family and I came to the Colony by chance, renting a home here while we were

house hunting elsewhere. It wasn't long before we fell in love with this neighborhood and

decided to stay. It started with that first conversation in the street and grew as we got to

know neighbors who shared gardening tips, appetizer recipes, power tools, and a good

amount of food and drink.

This year will be my first opportunity to really contribute to some of the events that bring

us together and give our community that small-town feel. I encourage you to join me by

participating however you like. Join the Civic League and attend one of our meetings.

Enter the 4th of July Parade. Help clean the bay. Judge the Halloween costume contest.

Host a block party.

Included in this newsletter is a schedule of events and list of the officers and directors of

the Civic League as well as a schedule of events. If you see an event that you would like to

help with, please contact one of us. If you don't know exactly whom to contact, you can

call, text or email me directly.

Thanks to all of the volunteers, members, and friendly residents who help to make

Chesopeian Colony a great place to live, boat, and raise a family!

“Clean The Bay Day” June 7, 2014 Saturday, June 7st, is the 26th annual “Clean the Bay Day”. During the last eleven

years, over 140 adults and youngsters have helped in cleaning the shoreline around Chesopeian Colony while participating in "Clean the Bay Day". If you would like to volunteer, meet at the boat ramp on the West end of Queen Anne Rd. at 9:00 a.m. for a safety briefing and work assignment. If you have a shallow draft watercraft (e.g. kayak, canoe, row boat, Jet Ski, out-board motorboat), you have the ability to access and clean a section of our shoreline from the water side of the shoreline. Neighborhood maps will be available for task coordination. It would make sense to leave your watercraft at your residence and walk, bike or drive to the safety brief before launching your own craft and travelling to the boat ramp area. If you do not have a watercraft, the landside of the shoreline area behind our nearby city water tower (2800 block Virginia Beach Blvd.) is accessible on foot for litter clean-up. (In the past there have been one or two adult Colony residents available to supervise this effort; and the same adult presence is expected this year). Due to the commercial activity within the commercial plaza, there is usually debris (food wrappers and containers) at the base of the street and parking lot storm drains and along the nearby shoreline. After the safety brief and task assignments are completed (10-20 minutes) volunteers will fan out to clean the shoreline and waters around Chesopeian Colony. All are invited, grand-parents, parents and kids! This is a great way to earn community service hours. Plan on anywhere from one-half hour to three hours depending on your available time. Collected debris is to be placed on the street at the West end of Queen Anne road no later than 1200 noon Saturday for pick-up by Virginia Beach City personnel. After the Clean-up Activity, the City of Virginia Beach normally hosts a picnic for Volunteers with live entertainment at the Great Neck Recreation Center Park (just down the street behind Cox High School). For safety, please bring gloves, sunglasses, bug spray and poison ivy neutralizing cream (if you are very sensitive to this plant). Also, if you expect to work on the land side of the shoreline, loose fitting long trousers and shirts offer better protection from plants or insect bites than short pants or shirt sleeves. With a few sensible safety precautions, this is wonderful way of learning about our local habitat and making it a comfortable home for the birds, fish and shellfish native to the Chesapeake Bay. Your help in protecting the environment and keeping our waterways looking good will is greatly appreciated! For additional information or to volunteer participation with a watercraft, please contact Tom McLaughlin at home phone 486-1737 or work e-mail william.t.mclaughlin3.ctr@mail,mil Thanks in advance for your assistance! Tom Mclaughlin

PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP OFF

You can help the Virginia Beach Police Department in their mission to reduce contaminants in the environment and reduce children’s opportunity to gain access to unused or old prescriptions.

When is the last time you cleaned out your medicine cabinet? Chances are you have some old prescription drugs lying around that you probably need to get rid of, but how? The Virginia Beach Police Department will be conducting a prescription drug drop off event on:

Saturday, April 26th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Third Precinct, 926 Independence Blvd., (Haygood) 757-385-2703

Attention High School Seniors!!!

Did you know that Chesopeian Colony awards an annual

scholarship? Yes, it’s true! Beginning in 2001, they have

awarded scholarships annually to worthy graduating high

school residents of the Colony. The scholarship is merit not

need based. Completed applications are due May 20th and

recipients will be notified in time for school senior awards

ceremonies.

Applications can be found at:

www.chesopeiancolonycivicleague.org or contact Jennifer

Coleman or Cheryl Noyes.

Special Thanks to Our Advertisers! Advertising in the CCCL newsletter is a great way to support the community and to get the word out about your local business.

Business Card: $25 1/4 Page: $35 1/2 Page: $50 Full Page: $100

Beginning with the next newsletter we are adding a new category, Colony Kids Classified, for resident kids to advertise their services (mowing, pet sitting, etc.) These ads will be $5 each.

If you would like to advertise in the next edition, contact the editor, Bill Thesier ([email protected]) before May 15.

Dredging update

The city and Langley & MacDonald have started scheduling

meetings with individual homeowners to review their private

dredging requests. This is a key step in completing the

permit application as well as an important opportunity to

discuss how the project will impact your property. Please

make sure to take advantage of this opportunity to meet and

discuss your situation.

Now that Spring is starting to burst out, the roar of lawn

equipment signals the need to remind everyone that all the

material (grass clippings, leaves, pine needles, etc.) needs to

be kept out of our waterways. Recycle at the curb, or in a

compost pile. If it goes in the water, we are all going to pay

to take it out later! Please speak with your lawn service and

request their cooperation.
