READINGS FOR JULY 5FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reading I – Zechariah 9:9-10 Reading II – Romans 8:9, 11-13 Gospel – Matthew 11:25-30

LIFE FOCUS QUESTIONS• The prophecy of Zechariah reminds us of Jesus’ entry into

Jerusalem: “See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek and riding on an ass.” Where are you being called to follow the example of Jesus and humble yourself?

• Today’s psalm concludes, “The Lord lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.” Within our world, who are the groups or individuals who are “bowed down”? How might God be calling us to care for them?

• St. Paul reminds us that we are given life by “God’s Spirit that dwells in you.” Where have you noticed the Spirit working within you and leading you to greater life?

• Jesus lifts up the “little ones” as a model for those who truly desire to understand the mystery of the kingdom of God. Who have been the “little ones” along your faith journey who have taught you the way of the kingdom?

PASTOR’S CORNER Like our surrounding parishes, the Festival Committee has discerned that we will not be able to host the Parish Festival this year in the manner to which we have been accustomed. However, the Festival Committee has been hard at work planning alternative events over various weeks and months of both a social and fundraising nature. I am very grateful for their efforts.

I am glad to share with you that our Annual Yard Sale will be taking place on Friday, July 3, 2020. I have heard (through the proverbial parish grapevine) that many members of our community are anxious to donate items to be placed for sale. All are invited to bring items to the rectory garage after the Masses this weekend, June 27-28, 2020 and throughout the week from June 29-July 2. Anyone wishing to help with the Yard Sale is most welcome to do so.

We are also planning to conduct our Major Awards Raffle/Capital Prize Drawing this year. We are in the process of preparing for the drawing. We are going to extend the length of time that the tickets will be available and are looking at a date in the fall on which the drawing will take place. We are hoping that all of us in the Saint Cecilia Community will be able to sell some tickets to neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. so that we get some income from the larger community as well, like we do at the Festival.

The Festival Committee is looking at other events such as a Friday/Saturday Drive-Thru Fish Fry, Virtual Online Auction, and other events that may take place over the next weeks and months.

Please note that it is now possible for Baptisms to take place and the Baptism Preparation Class can be scheduled. Obviously, there will be some procedural adaptations, and the number of Baptisms taking place at one time will be limited, as well as the number attending. Please contact the Parish Office for more details.

Also, we have resumed the celebration of Funeral Masses, given the same restrictions and procedures that take place at the celebration of Weekend and Weekday Masses.

Due to the Independence Day holiday being on July 3 this year, and the Fourth of July being on Saturday, and given that there remain a good number of people still not going out in public, there will not be Adoration this coming weekend. We are hoping to resume Adoration in August.

Given the situations that we are facing in our community, state and nation, all are welcome to join in the celebration of the Eucharist on Saturday morning, July 4, 2020 at 9:00 a.m.

God’s blessings!Fr. Leo Connolly

Mark your calendars! The Knights of Columbus’ Fourth Annual Golf Outing has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 6th, at Homestead Springs Golf Course, Groveport, Ohio. Registration information will be available soon.

As businesses and churches reopen, we are beginning the summer season. It is during these months that we depend the most on online giving to continue our ministry. We prayerfully invite you to use eGiving from your computer, smartphone or tablet to set up a recurring donation or to make a one-time gift. eGiving benefits you and our church in many ways, including:• Consistency: Your support will allow us to continue our

important ministries and continue to help our community.• Convenience: Support the parish from the comfort and safety

of your home with a smartphone or computer.• Cost-effective: Reduces our printing and mailing costs, so we

can use that saved money to further our ministries in the community. Plus, it’s better for the environment to use less paper!

To get started with eGiving using Faith Direct, please go to www.saintceciliachurch.org/faith-direct/ or contact the parish office to find out how you can get started.

JULY ADORATION CANCELLEDDue to the Fourth of July Holiday and the lack of available volunteers, the Adoration scheduled for July 3rd and 4th has been cancelled. The next scheduled Adoration will take place on August 7th and 8th.

ACTIVATE OR RE-ACTIVATE IN YOUR PARISHAs we slowly return to a new normal with our activities, the St. Cecilia Welcoming Committee has updated our Community Connections brochure for our parish. This brochure offers in one place, all of the many active organizations of our parish community. We have three ways for you to access the new Community Connections. If you are already receiving parish emails, watch for it to come to your email address for you to download, or check it out on our Parish website. And if you prefer, you can pick up a printed copy in the Gathering Space, or by stopping by the Parish Office. Now is a great time to check out the parish organizations where you may have an interest. Many have found ways to serve under the current health safety guidelines (virtual gatherings, etc.), and others are preparing to do so. Have you thought about helping with our Welcoming Committee, or getting active with our Athletic Association? The Coordinators for these, and all of the groups, would be happy to take your call with any questions you may have.

Over the next few weeks, as we slowly transition back into resuming public Masses, SCRIP gift cards will not be available to purchase after the Masses. However, you can call the parish office to preorder your cards, arrange a time to pick them up, and we will have them available for a contact-less pickup in the office or after Mass. For more information, or to preorder your gift cards, please contact Tonya Lancia at [email protected] or call (614) 878-5353.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Parish Festival unfortunately has been cancelled. The Festival Committee is planning on several alternative fundraising ideas in which CDC recommended safety protocols can be maintained. Please stay tuned for more details. If you have any ideas of fundraising activities, please contact Lee Ann Breeze at [email protected] or Troy Herron at [email protected].

Got stuff? The Festival Committee will be sponsoring a parish yard sale again this year on Friday, July 3rd from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. We would love to have your STUFF! Items can be dropped off to the Rectory garage before or after all the Masses this weekend, June 27th and 28th. Collections will also be available between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 29th through July 2nd. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any donations outside of these times. We’ll also be needing lots of help the day of the sale, so if you are available, please let us know. And ... if you are a bargain hunter, make sure to mark your calendar because there will be tons of great deals. 100% of the proceeds of this event will be used to offset parish expenses. If you can help or have questions, please contact Sue Hamilton at 614-329-8141 or [email protected].

July 4th falls on a Saturday this year. We encourage you to celebrate the founding of our nation at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Please note that the Parish Office will be closed on July 3rd.

A Prayer for Independence DayFather of all nations and ages, today we rededicate ourselves to your service and to the works of justice and freedom for all. As you have called us from many people to be one nation, help us to give witness in our lives and in our life as a nation to the rich diversity of your gifts. Grant that under your providence our country may share your blessings, with all the peoples of the earth. We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, on God, forever and ever. Amen.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO CLEAN SERVER ALBSSince we have resumed public Masses, you may have noticed that we are currently not utilizing altar servers for any of our weekend Masses. It is very difficult to maintain 6 feet social distancing in this liturgical ministry. With this break in service, it is a perfect time for the white albs (robes) that the altar servers wear to be cleaned and mended. If there are any volunteers willing to take on this task, please call the parish office at (614) 878-5353. We do not intend on the altar servers to return to serving until after the summer months, so this task can be broken up over several weeks. Thanks in advance for your willingness to volunteer in this role!

St. Cecilia Preschool registration continues for all families for the 2020-2021 school year. Our program is licensed through the Ohio Department of Education and holds a 5 STAR rating issued by the Step Up To Quality Program. We present the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd as our religion program. The curriculum follows the Early Learning Content Standards in all Domains: Cognitive (Math, Science, Social Studies & Language Arts) Motor Skills, Approaches to Learning, Health and Safety, with a play-based approach. Children need to be three years old by September 30, 2020 to be eligible for the 2020-2021 school year. Registration forms can be completed online at www.saintceciliachurch.org. The registration fee is $75.00 per family. For more information, contact Trisha Jakubick at (614) 878-0134.

To have a child baptized at St. Cecilia, the parents of the child need to attend one of our Parent Baptism Classes. Preregistration for the class is required; please call the parish office at 614-878-5353 to sign up. We have classes available in English and Spanish. Arrangements for Baptisms are made after the class is attended and are confirmed through the Parish Office. The family should be registered members of the parish and regularly attending Mass for a minimum of three months prior to scheduling a Baptism. If the parents are not registered members of Saint Cecilia Parish, they will need to present a letter from their current pastor giving permission for the Baptism to be held at St. Cecilia. Please also note that when choosing a Catholic Godparent, he or she is expected to request a Letter or a Certificate of Eligibility from their home parish that acknowledges the person to be a fully initiated, practicing Roman Catholic.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY UPDATEAt this time, the prayer shawl ministry will not be collecting any finished items and/or yarn donations in the Gathering Space until further notice. We are still very active in making items and distributing them to the area hospitals, and they have been well received. If anyone has a request for a blanket or shawl, please notify the parish office.

As we adapt to this ‘new normal,’ much of our communication in the parish is being accomplished electronically. As situations change daily during this pandemic, the best way for you to stay in contact with the parish is through our various means of electronic communications. Please note, if you are receiving emails with the links to the various Bishop Barron/Word on Fire videos and documents through the Flocknote email system, this is not the same email distribution that Fr. Connolly uses to communicate to the parish. If you are not already receiving emails from Fr. Connolly through the MailChimp email system, please send a message to Katie Wohrle at [email protected] to be added to that distribution list. You can also stay up-to-date with the parish by following us on our other social media platforms:

• Parish Website: www.saintceciliachurch.org/• Parish Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/saintceciliachurch/• Parish YouTube Channel:

www.youtube.com/channel/UCtW6f7AIn3NauP25aBKnIkwAlso, if you have moved recently, or changed your phone number, please contact the parish office at (614) 878-5353 to make sure we have the correct address and telephone number on file for you.

BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL“Living the Joy of the Gospel,” the theme of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, inspires us, as people of faith, to share joyfully the Good News of Christ to those who most need to feel His love. Works of kindness and assistance, sometimes in the smallest way, can bring about a profound change in a person’s life. Through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, we have an opportunity to bring about a positive change in the lives of many of God’s people. Through your generosity, you are supporting the various ministries and programs that are vital in spreading His love. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal officially kicks off the weekend of July 11/12, at which time you can make your gift or pledge. Our parish has been asked to raise $103,868.26. We can accomplish this if, after prayerful consideration, everyone gives what they can. Any amount raised over our goal will be returned to our parish to be used for our particular needs.

BINGO UPDATEDue to COVID-19 restrictions, our Bingo program is still on hiatus. We are waiting to get clarity from the State of Ohio and the Franklin County Health Department as to what restrictions will need to be in place if and when we are able to resume Bingo. If you volunteer to help run our Bingo program, please check your email. There was an informational email sent out last week regarding the potential startup of Bingo, which includes a poll as to whether or not you will be available to resume your volunteer role in this fundraising program.

INTERCESSORY PRAYERWednesday – 11:15 a.m.

SUMMER SMALL GROUP “ZOOM” SERIESBeginning the week of July 5th and ending the week of August 16th, St. Cecilia will be offering small group “Zoom” sessions to discuss the Ken Hensley series that was sent out to the parish earlier this year through Word on Fire. The series is a collection of 7 essays with a synopsis below. Sign-up will be limited to 50 people, so if you are interested, please do so early for a group spot. Here are a few details:• Groups will be small (8-10 people) and will be through the online

Zoom format.• Each group will have a facilitator to help guide the discussion.• Each essay will be provided via email prior to that week’s discussion.• The first session will be on the same day, possibly a Saturday, and

then each group is free to choose a different date & time to meet for the next 6 weeks.

Each of the 3 to 4 page essays deal with the conversion experience of former Baptist minister, Ken Hensley. He explains how he became disillusioned with the Protestant teaching on how one is saved…otherwise known as “Justification,” Though he questioned what he had been taught at seminary, he knew one thing for sure, the Catholic view on this topic was “A damning system of works righteousness” that he would never accept. It took him 10 years to come to the conclusion that this in fact was a gross misrepresentation of the Catholic understanding of Justification. So what is the purpose of us studying these essays? We Catholics have been poorly catechized and have limited understanding of the differences between Protestant (reform) theology and Catholic theology. The purpose of this study is to equip us with the knowledge we need to defend our faith tradition both scripturally and rationally. This is called apologetics. However, it is important for us to understand that it is not our intention to create an “us vs. them” mentality. But we do need to be able to “always be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15). If and when we are challenged by non-Catholics (or anyone for that matter), we must be able to understand both the reform teaching and the Catholic teaching so we can properly defend and promote our beliefs. That will be the ultimate goal of this 7-week Catholic Appetizers series. A secondary purpose is to help us explain these truths to family and friends who are thinking of leaving the faith or who have already left. This is especially important for our younger members who are wooed away by non-Catholic traditions that give the appearance of being more “fun” or sounding more theologically convincing. Please join us in this important discussion! To sign up or for questions, please contact Susan Baker at [email protected] or 614-327-7558.

ARE YOU REGISTERED?To avoid problems or misunderstandings, especially when planning Baptisms, marriages, or when you have special requests for the parish, etc., be sure that you are a registered and active member of the parish. So are you registered and active?

1. Have you moved away from your parental home?2. Are you newly married, grown up here, but starting your

own family?3. Are you living with your parents, but over the age of

twenty?4. Are you new to the area and just haven’t gotten around

to registering here?5. Are you presently not receiving contribution envelopes?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, you are not registered. To register, please go to our website at http://www.saintceciliachurch.org/general-information/parish-registration-forms/ to download a copy of the registration form, or call the parish office at (614) 878-5353 to request a form.

IS HELP NEEDED?If you or a family member can use any of the things mentioned below, please ask one of our Ministers of Hospitality for help before Mass.

• We have gluten-free hosts available. Please inform the Minister of Hospitality that one is needed. The host will be consecrated with the others. You will need to be in the Communion line for Father.

• For those with mobility issues, you may request that Communion be brought to your seat. The Minister of Hospitality will then let our Ministers of Communion know.

• We have auditory assistance devices which may be used during Mass. They amplify the sounds.
