Steuben County might best be known for its lakes,of which there are over 100 (for tourism marketingpurposes, the number 101 is used).

The county’s lakes range in size from a few acresto 1,034 acres, which is Lake James, one of the state’slargest natural lakes.

A majority of the lakes are in Jamestown andPleasant townships. That’s where the Lake Jameschain is located, which includes Big and Little Otterlakes, Snow Lake, Lake James and Jimmerson Lake.Other major lakes in these two townships include LakeGeorge, Barton Lake, Crooked Lake, Fox Lake and LoonLake.

Clear Lake, in the northeastern corner of thecounty, is considered to have some of the best waterquality in the state, according to authorities withIndiana University and the Indiana Department ofEnvironmental Management.

Hamilton Lake, which is practically surrounded bythe town of Hamilton in the southeastern corner of thecounty, has 802 surface acres.

Lake Gage, a round, kettle-shaped lake nearOrland, is about 332 acres and like Clear Lake, hasextremely high water quality.

With all of the lakes along with Pigeon River, FishCreek and Fawn River (Crooked Creek) it shouldn’tcome as a surprise that Steuben County has a lot ofwater. In fact, about 9 percent of the county’s surfaceacreage is water.

Some of the county’s lakes are highly developed, such as Lake James and Crooked Lake. Crooked Lakewas one of the earliest in the county to be developedfor recreational use. There once were passenger trainsthat carried visitors to Crooked Lake and Lake James.

Many of the early cottages on county lakes haveeither been converted to year-round use or have beenknocked down and replaced with permanent homes, ormodern second homes.

A study sponsored by the Steuben CountyCommunity Foundation to inventory historic structuresin Steuben County was buoyed upward due to themany older cottages on some of the lakes.

Lake James’ hilly, wooded shoreline is dotted withlake cottages and homes. However, about one-fourthof the natural shoreline of James, in Pokagon StatePark, remains much as it was when it was created bythe glaciers. Pokagon’s shoreline extends to itsnorthern boundary on Snow Lake. There, a steep, tree-

covered hill drops off sharply to the water’s edge. Some of the county’s lakes remain natural

wonders, with little encroachment by humans. Thoseinclude the Seven Sisters Lakes, near Pokagon StatePark, where a nature preserve, privately-ownedwetlands and Trine State Recreation Area surround theshoreline. The Seven Sisters, the largest of which isGentian Lake, are some of the most pristine lakes inthe Midwest.

Also, there’s Walters Lake, near Fremont. There areonly two access points, and both are privately owned. If you can get there, Walters Lake produces some ofthe best pan fishing around.

Somewhat more accessible is Loon Lake, west ofAngola. Much of Loon Lake is preserved by the NatureConservancy, a private, international land conservationgroup. Loon Lake is home to many different species ofrare and endangered plants and wildflowers, includingcarnivorous plants.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resourcesmaintains a fish hatchery along the Fawn River inOrland. There, DNR Fish and Wildlife biologists raisefish for stocking in Indiana lakes and also use thefacility as a base from which to conduct research onfish and fisheries in Indiana.
