2017 New Mexico beach volleyball • 1 2017 SCHEDULE New Mexico heads to Florida for Stetson Beach Invitational New Mexico beach volleyball heads to the East for the first time in program history as it travels to Tavares, Florida, to play in six matches at the Stetson Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Lobos (3-5) play No. 17/RV Florida Atlantic (8-2), No. 12/8 Georgia State (6-4) and Morehead State (0-0) on Friday before turning around and playing Jacksonville State (1-10), No. 14/12 Stetson (2-7) and Lincoln Memorial (0-0) on Saturday. In a weekend of firsts for New Mexico — first time in the Eastern time zone, first matchup ever against all six teams — it’s not an entirely new scenario for the Lobos. The Lobos will face some very talented ranked teams, which has been a constant so far during the young season. FAU, Georgia State and Stetson are all either ranked or receiving votes in both of the two national polls, the DiG Magazine Poll and the AVCA Poll, and Georgia State and Stetson each qualified to the inaugural NCAA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships last May. But in order to make this a productive trip, the Lobos will have win close matches, something has eluded them — if only by the slimmest of margins — so far this season. Two weeks ago, UNM lost 3-2 to then-No. 15 TCU and most recently fell 3-2 to then-No. 9/12 Arizona State last Sunday. Both matches came down to the final court, and in both instances, that final court came down to a third set. This weekend projects to be similar, as New Mexico will likely have to battle for points when they play at Hickory Point Beach. The Lobos have some partnerships that are playing strongly right now, and those duos will be looked to for scoring. Out of the No. 1 position, Cassie House & Ashley Kelsey picked up a marquee win vs. Arizona State and currently sit 4-4 on the season playing the top tandems of every opponent. Similarly, UNM’s No. 2 tandem of Devanne Sours & Lise Rugland nabbed a superb victory vs. Arizona last Sunday and have played at a high level all season. Sours & Rugland are 5-3 on the year, and could very well play at the No. 1 position depending on matchups. Both of the Lobos top pairings have been the most steady so far this season. Down the lineup, head coach Jeff Nelson and his staff have solid players, but some inconsistency in these positions has foiled New Mexico in close matches. Marisa Doran & Eastyn Baleto are 5-3 on the season playing primarily out of the No. 3 position, while Julia Warren & Lauren Twitty are also 5-3 playing mostly from the No. 5 spot. The final Lobo duo has largely been Jackie Baro & Carly Beddingfield (2-4), with that tandem splitting time between the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 courts. Notes and newsNew Mexico RECEIVING VOTES IN NATIONAL POLL

The University of New Mexico beach volleyball team is receiving votes in both of the national polls as it enters the third week of the 2017 season. Unofficially, the Lobos check in at 22nd in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll and 23rd in the DiG Magazine Beach Volleyball Poll, which were both released Monday, March 13.The Lobos are 3-5 on the season, with wins over Benedictine, Colorado Mesa and Texas A&M-Kingsville. All five of UNM’s losses were to teams ranked in the polls at the time. Both polls have USC (4-0), Pepperdine (3-1) and UCLA (6-2) as the top three teams. Florida State (4-2) is 4th in the AVCA poll and 5th in the DiG poll, while Hawai’i is 5th in the AVCA poll and 4th in the DiG poll. This weekend at the Stetson Beach Invitational, UNM faces No. 17/RV Florida Atlantic, No. 12/8 Georgia State and No. 14/12 Stetson. Both Georgia State and Stetson made the inaugural NCAA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships in 2016.

Head eastWhile also the name of a hard rock band from Illinois (their song “Never Been Any Reason” charted at No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975), Head East is also the mantra of the Lobos for this weekend’s trip. When New Mexico heads to Tavares, Florida, for the Stetson Beach Invitational, it will be the team’s first-ever foray into the Eastern time zone and the eastern portion of the United States. Last year, UNM did make it as far east as Baton Rouge, but the state capitol of Louisiana is in the Central time zone and its arguably more “south” than “east”. This trip to Florida also adds to the Lobos’ list of states visited. Of the 16 weekends of competition in program history, nine have been to Arizona (including both this season), with three in Albuquerque, two in California and one each in Texas and Louisiana.

So Nice to meet youAlong with the novelty of an Eastern time zone trip, the Lobos will also get to experience some more firsts when they compete at the Stetson Beach Invitational in Tavares, Florida. All six of the Lobos’ matches this weekend will be the first-ever meeting between UNM and their opponents. New Mexico plays Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, Morehead State, Jacksonville State, Stetson and Lincoln Memorial this weekend. Part of this can be attributed to the fact UNM is quite far away from all six of these schools.

Jacksonville State, which is in Jacksonville, Alabama, is the closest school to UNM at 1190 miles. FAU in Boca Raton, Florida, is the farthest at 1684 miles. The mean distance from Albuquerque to all six schools is 1378 miles (or over four times the distance between ABQ and Phoenix). New Mexico has played some schools quite a bit, including five matches each against Arizona, Arizona State and Grand Canyon and three matches against TCU.

Playing it closeAshley Kelsey & Cassie House face off against some of the toughest pairs in the nation playing out of the No. 1 position for the Lobos. And that duo has been giving the fans their money’s worth, as eight of their 16 sets this season have been decided by three points or fewer. They’ve posted five 21-19 scores, losing twice, and winning three times, with two of those 21-19 victories coming in a marquee win over Arizona State’s top tandem of Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette. House & Kelsey have also gone to extra points two times this season, with a 25-23 loss to Loyola Marymount and a 22-20 setback to TCU. Last season, 19 of their 48 sets were decided by three points or fewer.

Let’s play threeDevanne Sours & Lise Rugland are 5-3 on the season playing primarily out of the No. 2 position, and all three of their losses were exceptionally close. How close? All three setbacks came down to a third set. That, coupled with a three-set win over Grand Canyon, means Sours & Rugland have played four of their eight matches this season to three sets. The rest of the Lobos have five combined three-set matches, while Sours & Rugland posted just four three-set matches in 20 matches last season.

20-win clubSo far in the three-year history of New Mexico beach volleyball, just one tandem has reached 20 career pairs wins. Marisa Doran & Eastyn Baleto are 28-6 all-time, and actually broke the 20-win plateau last season during their 23-3 campaign. This weekend at the Stetson Beach Invitational, two other pairs have a chance to join them, as Devanne Sours & Lise Rugland sit 19-9 all-time and Cassie House & Ashley Kelsey own a 15-14 all-time record. With six matches in Florida, the both Lobo duos can reach 20 career wins.

207 New Mexico beach volleyball • 4

Notes and newsStrong showing this weekend would also push Kelsey and House past 20 wins individually in their careers. Kelsey has 19 wins in her career, while House has posted 16 since starting her career last spring. Baleto (36 wins) has the program record, followed by Julia Warren (32 wins), Doran (28), Rugland (26) and Sours (24).

And we meet again...New Mexico is a bit of an island in the world of NCAA beach volleyball. The Lobos are the only team in the state of New Mexico to sponsor beach volleyball as an NCAA varsity sport, so with the lack of in-state competition, UNM has to find nearby neighbors for games. With multiple schools in Arizona sponsoring the sport, the Lobos can travel west for some matches, which means New Mexico has played its fair share of games against those schools. In fact, of the 48 matches ever played in UNM history, 16 have come against Arizona schools. The Lobos have played Arizona, Arizona State and Grand Canyon five times each (including once each this season), with the 16th match coming in this season’s opener vs. Benedictine University at Mesa.

Scouting Florida AtlanticFlorida Atlantic is 8-2 on the season, picking up some strong wins against LSU and Tulane, a pair of teams ranked in the DiG Magazine Poll. The Owls are 17th in the DiG Poll themselves, and have swept six of their matches. Two of FAU’s pairings are riding hot streaks into the season, including their No. 1 tandem of Megan Rice and Jessalyn Kinlaw (9-1 overall, winners of eight straight) and their No. 4 pair of Nicole Navarro and Nicole Grant (8-2, seven straight wins). Additionally, the Florida Atlantic’s Ashlan Cunningham and Julia Lewkowicz are 7-2 on the year from the No. 5 slot. Candace Lacour and Gabrielle Dischler have gone 6-1 from the No. 3 position as well. In fact, the only position that head coach Capri Grotowski’s Owls aren’t winning the majority of their matches is the No. 2 spot, where FAU’s Brittney Pellitteri and Jazmine Barker have gone 4-4. FAU is just 5-5 overall at the 2’s.

Scouting Georgia StateThe No. 12/8 Panthers are 6-4 on the year, but are coming off a tough four-loss stint on the West Coast last weekend. Georgia State lost to Cal Poly, Long Beach State, UCLA and Pepperdine last weekend, but has otherwise torn through its schedule. Georgia State’s top tandem of Delaney Rohan and Chelsea Ross fell in all four of their matches last weekend and sit 6-4 on the season, but all four losses were in three sets.

LeaAnn Starr and Haley Pa’akaula, the Panthers’ No. 2 team, managed one win vs. Cal Poly, and hold a 7-3 record. GSU’s No. 3 team, Brooke Weiner and Natalie Wilson also fell three times. Head coach Beth Van Fleet returns nine players that combined for 70 victories from last year’s NCAA Championship team, but the Panthers rely on seven underclassmen and have three grad transfers transitioning to beach volleyball.

Scouting morehead StateMorehead State is in its first year sponsoring beach volleyball, and Friday’s slate will be the Eagles’ first action in the sand.MSU is lead by head coach Jaime Gordon, who is in his 14th year at the school. The Eagles will rely on their three seniors for contributions early, but will have to balance that with eight underclassmen. Sophomore Jordan Jones, one of seven players taller than 6 feet on Morehead State’s roster, was named Second Team All-OVC indoors.

Scouting Jacksonville StateJacksonville State, which is in Jacksonville, Alabama, is currently 1-10 on the season. The Gamecocks have lost every match they’ve played against Division I schools, winning only against Division III Huntingdon last weekend. JSU has been swept seven times and has scored a point vs. DI competition just three times, all in 4-1 losses. Katie Will and Jae-Lyn Visscher have teamed up to play nine times in the No. 1 spot, going 3-6. That’s the only court where Jacksonville State has won more than three times. The Gamecocks’ No. 2 duo of Hannah Kirk and Charis Ludtke are 1-6. Of the seven players in JSU’s lineup that have played in all matches, five have lost 10 times.

Scouting StetsonStetson, the host of this week’s festivities, are enter the week on a five-game losing streak. The Hatters fell in four straight 3-2 matches before getting swept 5-0 by Hawai’i in Honolulu. They’ve also lost 3-2 to LSU and 4-1 to Florida State. Stetson, which is 2-7 overall, has wins against Florida Atlantic and Cal State LA. The Hatters’ top pair of Sunniva Helland-Hansen and Maggie Skjelbred is 3-6, but they own three-set wins against Hawai’i and LSU. Out of the No. 2 slot, Darby Dunn and Kristin Lind (the ASUN Preseason Player of the Year) are 5-3 (5-4 overall), and beat Florida State, FAU and LMU twice. Stetson, under head coach Kristina Hernandez has a very international flavor on its rosters, as there are three Norwegians, two Canadians,

Notes and newsand a Swede on the team’s 19-player roster. Last season, Stetson made the inaugural NCAA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships, and brings back 12 players.

Scouting Lincoln memorialLike Morehead State, Lincoln Memorial is opening up its 2017 campaign at the Stetson Beach Invitational. Unlike Morehead State, this isn’t LMU’s first season. Entering their second season in the sand, the Railsplitters finished 4-18 in 2016. Lincoln Memorial — a Division II school from Harrogate, Tennessee — picked up wins against DI teams Morgan State and Jacksonville State (the same as in this weekend’s event). Last season, the Railsplitters’ No. 1 tandem of Abby Cash and Brooke Fleeman went 2-16, but both return. LMU also returns its No. 2 duo of Jamie Jehne and Bristol Snider (1-17 in 2016); its No. 3 pairing of Samantha Cash and Erica Whiteaker (7-13); and its No. 4 pairing of Kiera Holland and Peyton McDaniel (4-16).

LOBOS FINISH 2016 WITH STRONG PRESENCE IN POLLS

The New Mexico beach volleyball team finished its second season with a strong presence in the national polls, ranking 18th in the season-ending DiG Magazine Poll and receiving votes in the final AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball poll. The Lobos, who compiled a 17-9 record on the year, unofficially finished as the 17th-ranked team in the 10-team AVCA ranking released Tuesday, May 10, and closed their second season as the youngest program ranked in the DiG Magazine poll released Thursday, May 5.Overall, New Mexico received votes in the AVCA poll in all but three releases since the start of the regular season, rising to an unofficial high of 13th twice (March 28 and April 11).The Lobos also maintained a steady presence in the DiG Magazine poll, first being ranked on March 29 and climbing to a program-best No. 12 on April 12. During the 2016 season, UNM played USC, Florida State, No. 6 Arizona and No. 10 LSU and had matches against six other teams — No. 11 Grand Canyon, No. 14 Tulane, No. 16 California, No. 20 South Carolina, (RV) TCU and (RV) Washington — that were either ranked or receiving votes in the DiG Magazine poll.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL POSTS PROGRAM-best GPA IN FALL 2016

After posting a tremendous campaign in the sand last spring, the University of New Mexico beach volleyball team posted a stellar semester in the classroom last fall. The Lobos recorded a team GPA of 3.64 for

the Fall 2016 semester, the highest in the five-semester history of the program. It’s fourth semester that the team registered a mark of at least 3.4.The beach team combined with the rest of the women’s sports at UNM for a 3.55 GPA. It’s the 13th-straight semester of at least a 3.4 by the combined women’s teams, as well.

A primer on beach volleyballBeach volleyball and court volleyball share many of the same basic rules. Each side gets three hits, there’s rally scoring, and a team earns a points when the ball hits the ground or goes out of bounds. But there are some key difference between the two sports: • Beach volleyball is a partner sport played

during the spring. Court volleyball is a six-player sport played during the fall.

• Beach volleyball plays the best of three sets, with the first two sets played to 21 points, and a tiebreaker set played to 15 points, if necessary. A set must be won by at least two points.

• Open-handed tipping is prohibited in beach volleyball and the block touch counts as one of three permitted contacts.

• Coaches may only speak or give any kind of input to their players during timeouts or between sets.

• Beach volleyball players switch sides of the court every seven points during a 21-point set and every five points during a 15-point set.

• Beach volleyball is usually contested in dual matches, where the winning team is the school that wins three of five individual matches versus its opponent. Similar in format to tennis, each of those individual matches consist of a doubles — a pair of teammates ranked by ability — that are matched against their corresponding doubles from the opposing team.

Beach Volleyball enters 2nd season as 90th NCAA

ChampionshipBefore the 2016 season, the NCAA approved beach volleyball as the 90th NCAA Championship at the 2015 NCAA Convention, which allowed the sport to advance from the emerging sports for women list to a full-fledged NCAA championship. The NCAA Beach Volleyball Committee also determined the sport will be officially referred to as “beach volleyball”. When the sport was placed on the list of emerging sports for women in 2009, it was called sand volleyball. But because the sport is known as beach volleyball at all other levels of play throughout the world, the committee made its decision to refer to the sport as beach volleyball. The second-annual NCAA Beach Volleyball

Championships will take place May 5-7, 20167 at the Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shore, Alabama. The championship will have an eight-team bracket that will be played in a double-elimination format.USC won the inaugural NCAA National Championship 3-0 over Florida State. Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport with 53 Division I colleges and universities sponsoring. NCAA rules require 40 sponsoring schools to request an NCAA championship. Data shows that on average, 60 percent of participants at a sponsoring school participate only in beach volleyball instead of playing both beach and indoor volleyball.
