The Tigers fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the league while Strasburg improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the league. Strasburg is ranked third in Class 2A. The Indians took a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the Tigers made a game out of it in the second period on a touchdown run by senior Zach Brammer with the extra-point kick supplied by sophomore Michael Chavez, closing the gap to 14-7 at halftime. But Strasburg added touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to pull away for the victory. Sterling rushed for 147 yards, led by Brammer with 76 yards on 16 carries and the only Sterling touchdown. Senior quarterback James Skerjanec ran for 37 yards on 12 carries; sophomore Tyler Graber had one carry for 16 yards; senior Ethan Rose 3 carries for 12 yards; Chavez 1 carry for 4 yards and sophomore Austin Burkholder 1 carry for 2 yards. Skerjanec was 9-for-23 passing for 43 yards and an interception. Rose caught 6 passes for 26 yards, Chavez 2 catches for 11 yards and sophomore Austin Chavez had a carry for 6 yards. Strasburg rushed for 223 yards and tallied 129 yards through the air. Defensively, Rose had 7 tackles to lead the Tigers, senior Colson Bacon 6, Burkholder and Austin Chavez 5 each and Michael Chavez and junior Joey Shortino 4 apiece. The Tigers will host Wray Friday at 7 p.m. in a non-league contest. Wray is 1-1 overall this year in Class 1A. Tiger Offensive Line The Tigers offensive line is anchored this year by returning starters Colson Bacon and Brent Gilliland, both returning starters and 3-year varsity letter winners. Gilliland is a left tackle and Bacon plays left guard. Junior Joey Shortino started some games last year at center and has moved to right guard this season. Gilliland selected Honorable Mention in the Patriot League last year. Shortino will also earn his third varsity letter this year. “We have a pretty good nucleus back this year on the offensive line,” said Assistant Coach Josh Mayhugh. “I really think the offensive line can be a big strength for us this year. “It’s been an area where we have struggled in the past, but we have some good kids back with some good size and they play smart. If all of the kids stay healthy we will have a good mix.” Junior Jake Busmente, who lettered last year as a sophomore, is the starting center and is doing a “great job” according to Mayhugh. Starting at left tackle is junior Chase Frank, who is new to the program, and has also earned high praise from his coach. Also rotating on the offensive line are junior Zane Powell and sophomore Zach Hewitt. “We try to rotate our offensive and defensive linemen quite a bit to keep the kids fresh,” Mayhugh said. “Everyone is interchangeable, and that’s a good thing. Zane and Zach do a good job wherever we ask them to play.” Mayhugh has seen improvement on the offensive line in the first 3 games of the season. “The line could have done a little bit better in our first game this year,” he said, “but we have made some improvement. In our second game (24-6 win over Mead on Aug. 29), our line dominated the game on offense and defense.” Sterling once again employs the spread offense this year, which means the offensive linemen have to stay sharp on every play and be ready to make adjustments. “We have ran the spread offense for a few years with a base/zone concept,” Mayhugh explained. “The kids have to work together, depending on the defensive front they are up against. “Pass blocking is pretty standard and the linemen have done a good job protecting our quarterback. We still need some improvement on the line, but the kids are doing a good job.” By Ken McDowell Sports Editor WALDEN – The Peetz Bulldogs tallied 402 yards of total offense in a dominating 71-36 North Division win Friday at North Park. Friday’s contest was the first division game of the season for the Bulldogs as they also improve to 2-0 overall. “We won, and that’s a good thing,” said Peetz Coach Scott Sorensen. “We played well in the first half, and in the second half we kind of backed off and let some of our younger kids get some playing time. “We had a decent running game and our passing game was efficient, but we still have some things we need to work on.” The Bulldogs built a 45-12 halftime lead and that was enough to let Sorensen substitute freely in the second half. Peetz ran for 298 yards, led by junior Jordan Nelson with 141 yards on 11 carries and 2 touchdowns. Sophomore Cody Wilson ran for 99 yards on 8 carries and 2 TD’s; senior Bradey Holtz had 42 yards on 7 carries and 2 TD’s and senior Garrett Roelle had 9 yards on 3 carries and a touchdown. Holtz was 5-for-7 passing the football for 104 yards and 2 TD’s; Wilson had 3 catches for 68 yards and a touchdown; senior Casey Barrett had a touchdown catch for 21 yards and junior Garrin Cox had 1 reception for 15 yards. Junior Wolfgang Wenneker led Peetz in tackles with 8, Cox, Wilson and freshman Helmuth Wenneker 7 each, Nelson and senior Brian Roelle 6 apiece and Holtz 5. Wilson and Garrett Roelle each had an interception and Holtz recovered a North Park fumble. The Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them Friday as they will host the Prairie Mustangs in a huge North Division contest at 7 p.m. Prairie enters the game with a 2-0 overall mark and 1-0 in the division. “Prairie is fast, and quickness is the name of the game in six- man football,” Sorensen said. “Offensively we will try to run right at them and defensively we hope our size can help us and contain Prairie’s speed. That’s the fun part of six-man football.” Peetz Bulldog offense dominates Sterling Tiger varsity offensive linemen this year are (left to right) Chase Frank, Joey Shortino, Jake Busmente, Colson Bacon and Brent Gilliland.
