My total tenure is 38 years in Education: 27 years as a high school Agriculture Education teacher and FFA Advisor with 11 years as a Superintendent of Schools.

We also need medical authorization in order to dispense any medication. These forms can be found on-line under Quick Links, Handbooks & Forms. Welcome Back!!! I hope everyone enjoyed a longer Christmas Break than normal for the sec-ond year in a row. We avoided using any snow days during the first semester and are on sched-ule, but you never know what Mother Nature has in store for the second semester. Our first semester was very successful as usual and I am eagerly looking forward to a strong finish during the second half of the 2014-15 school year. With that being said, here are some items for your consideration as we roll into 2015. Sportsmanship. As we are now in the middle of our winter sports season, I want to remind

everyone that positive sportsmanship is an expectation for everyone. We probably have the best support for our ath-letic teams in southeast Nebraska and the only way we can add to this is by being the most positive and encouraging fans we can be. It may be a little bit cliché, but let’s all try to Let the Coaches Coach, Let the Officials Officiate, and Let the Fans be Positive Supporters. If we do that, we will continue to raise the bar and continue to be the best fans in southeast Nebraska. Students at School Events. For the most part, our students do a nice job at ballgames. The only concern I have is the number of kids who come to games just to “play”. It would make my job, as well as that of other staff members who are on duty, easier if students would spend more time watching the game and less time playing in the front lobby and cafeteria areas. My personal philosophy is that if kids are watching the game, they are learning something about the game as well. By doing this, we can continue to develop great athletes who are students of the game. In addi-tion, there is less chance that someone will get hurt if everyone is watching the game. Elementary Recess. As we enter the coldest months of the school year, I would like to remind parents of our ex-pectation with outside recess. As long as the temperature, and taking into consideration wind chill, is above freezing, we will have outside recess. This is also dependent on the conditions of the playground. Administrative decision will be the final factor in determining where recess will take place. Getting a little fresh air during the day is good for kids, so please make sure your students come prepared for outside recess. Attendance. Looking back at the first semester, our overall daily student attendance was very good. In fact, stu-dent absences as a whole were as low as any year I can remember. Having great attendance is one of the keys that lead to student success. At the start of the year, I reminded parents to provide a note from a doctor, dentist, or other medical professional if their student would be missing school for an appointment. I would like to commend parents for being diligent about this. Keep up the good work and please continue to provide the school with this information during the second semester! If you have any questions about the student attendance policies, please refer to the stu-dent handbooks or contact me directly.

GO JETS!!!

Every year the governor honors students from various clubs who have received national recognition for their hard work and proficiency with their various competitions. This year the Sterling Skills USA team that consisted of Thomas Tucker, Erika Goracke, and Tara Hestermann received a 3rd place national medal in the rotunda of the State Capitol for their protect "Raising Beef to Feed America". After the ceremony they had a private meeting with Senator Watermeier who thanked them for their hard work and passion for agriculture.

The Sterling Junior class enjoyed County Government Day on December 8th in Tecumseh. The day began with the introduction of county officials and Legion members. The students then went on a scavenger hunt to the various offices to find information, from where to get a license to being married in the courthouse. Next was the “Jeopardy Competition” on County Government. In a close contest with JCC, the Sterling Junior Class was victorious! Judge Daniel Bryan then led a witness memory simulation in which the students were asked to repeat what they heard about a crime to other students. In this demonstration, Judge Bryan enforced the notion that not all testimony is as accurate as it may appear.

We then had lunch sponsored by the Johnson County Ladies Auxiliary which was delicious. Following the noon

luncheon, the students returned to the courtroom and a Mock Trial was played out by both schools. Sterling was the plaintiff and JCC was the defense. This learning experience was enhanced by Judge Bryan’s leadership as he coached each student on the do’s and don’ts of what attorneys and witnesses encounter during a trial.

The afternoon concluded with the Sheriff from Nemaha County giving a demonstration on distracted driving. Several students were given the opportunity to use a device to see firsthand what it is like being distracted with electronic devise while using a motor vehicle. A photo for posterity was captured on the south side of the courthouse.

Looking for a fun after school activity for your child? Consider signing up for a 4-H Afterschool Workshop hosted by the University of Nebraska Extension.

-4 Wheelin’ Physics: Youth will use a remote controlled truck to learn basic physics principles such as friction, velocity, energy and force with interactive exciting activities. The workshop runs from after school to 5:30pm on January 15. It is open to students, grades 3-6 and only costs $10. -Vet Science: Youth will participate in hands on activities to enhance their understanding of an animal’s biology and their behaviors. By the end of the workshop, youth will have the skills to assess the health and well-being of multiple animals. The workshop runs from after school to 5:30pm on February 10. It is open to students, grades 3-6 and only costs $10. -Power of Wind: youth will practice designing and redesigning different wind powered objects while learning about how wind speed is measured. The workshop runs from after school to 5:30pm on March 12. It is open to students, grades 3-6 and only costs $10. -Upcycle for Earth: Youth will learn about the harmful effect humans have on the environment along with sim-ple solutions to help protect the earth for future generations. They will also create a project using reused items. The workshop runs from after school to 5:30pm on April 7. It is open to students, grades 3-6 and only costs $10. -Rockets to the Rescue: Youth will be tasked with one mission: to design and build an aerodynamic food trans-portation device that can deliver a payload of nutritious food to disaster victims. The workshop runs from after school to 5:30pm on May 14. It is open to students, grades 3-6 and only costs $10.
