Do we have free will? And if we don’t, why do we feel as if we do? Popular author Dan Barker examines the way we make choices in this world through his original concept of “harmonic free will: a philosophy that acknowledges both the impersonal laws of cause and e©ect that govern our world, as well as our own independent volition—without ever seeing these two perspectives as contradictory.
DAN BARKER is a former-evangelical-preacher-turned-outspoken-atheist who, along with his wife Annie Laurie Gaylor, runs the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the separation of church and state. He has written numerous articles for Freethought Today, an American freethought newspaper, and is also the author of Godless (Ulysses Press) and God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction (Sterling).

God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction
by Dan Barker, author of Godless, foreword by Richard Dawkins
What words come to mind when we think of God? Merciful? Just? Compassionate? Delving deep into the Bible, former evangelical preacher Dan Barker uncovers God’s negative qualities: jealous, petty, unforgiving, bloodthirsty, vindictive—and worse! Witty and well researched, this unique atheist book explains exactly why the Scripture shouldn’t govern our everyday lives. It makes a powerful argument for the separation of church and state.
DANIEL BARKER was a Christian preacher and minister for 19 years, before leaving Christianity in 1984. Today, he is the co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation with his wife, Annie Laurie Gaylor, and is the author of several books, including his memoir, Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America’s Leading Atheists (Ulysses Press). He lives in Madison, WI.

Norton & Co.), and The God Delusion (Houghton Mi¾in Harcourt). He lives in England.

This beautiful illustrated edition brings a rarely seen visual dimension to Thoreau’s philosophical masterpiece.
In March 1845, HENRY DAVID THOREAU built himself a wooden hut on the edge of Walden Pond, near Concord, MA, where he lived until September 1847. What could be more dramatic than a glinting chandelier? A sparkling, crystal- studded lighting option is like a piece of jewelry for the dining room or foyer, creating a beguiling zone of intima-cy around the dinner table or casting an alluring glow as you greet and welcome guests. (As a general rule of thumb in a dining room, the bottom of the fixture should hang thirty to thirty-six inches from the top of the table, so there’s plenty of space for diners to in-teract without dodging errant branches of gilt brass and glass.) But don’t limit their application to grand or expected spaces. Matched to humble elements, all those swirling tiers and faceted teardrops can be jaw-dropping over a bathtub, or act as an elegant, imagi-native foil to plain plastered walls left bare. And over a bed in an otherwise serene neutral room with a minimalist bent? Absolutely breathtaking.

As the rst thing people see when they get to your front step, a knocker sets the mood with panache. It should have some he and feel heavy in the hand (the better to call your attention to a visitor on the stoop). Think of it as eye candy for your façade—a charming bit of bling that says hello before you even open the door.

Today’s level of volcanic activity, as seen in Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano in 2016, is a pale shadow of past periods when sustained and widespread eruptions shaped climate.
252 Million BCE
With the rise of oxygen, life forms
grew bigger and more energetic.
There were leaps of evolution
and several mass extinctions, which mostly
occurred during unusually active volcanic
eruptions known as Large Igneous Provinces.
These emitted gigantic quantities of green-
house gases, warming the climate, acidifying
oceans, and often creating widespread oxygen-
starved ocean dead zones.
The Permian Mass Extinction, otherwise
known as the “Great Dying,” was the closest this
planet has come to losing complex life altogether.
Before that catastrophe, a menagerie of
reptiles roamed the supercontinent of Pangea,
which straddled the globe from the South Pole
to the Arctic. Ice covered large areas of south-
ern land, fringed by conifer forests. Moisture
barely reached the vast continental interior, so
desert dunes drifted across parts of Europe and
America. That cool climate reversed sharply,
however. The first instance occurred 262
million years ago, triggered by eruptions where
China is today. But the real lethal heat marking
the Great Dying struck 252 million years ago,
when Siberia hemorrhaged lava for millennia,
burying an area the size of Europe in basalt and
ash over two miles (three kilometers) thick.
Acid fog circled the planet and sulfur billowed
into the stratosphere, triggering a transient
volcanic winter before raining out as highly
corrosive acid rain. Greenhouse gas flooded
the atmosphere enough to raise global temper-
atures by 18 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees
Celsius), making the tropics lethally hot. Carbon
dioxide dissolved in the oceans, acidifying them,
and they became so starved of oxygen that even
seabed-burrowing worms disappeared.
In a preview of the present, fossil-fuel
combustion exacerbated the climate change.
Magma feeding the eruptions ignited coal and
oil deposits, releasing methane and carbon
dioxide and spreading fly ash thousands of
miles downwind. A staggering 90 percent
of marine life, and some 75 percent of land
life, went extinct in less than 60,000 years
(a geological eye blink). Biodiversity didn’t
recover until several million years later.

LETHAL HEAT AND THE “GREAT DYING”
197
A 2016 photograph of coral bleaching around Heron Island, close to the southernmost point of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. As a three-year global bleaching episode ended in 2017, scientists said it was the widest and worst yet measured.
2017
REEFS FEEL THE HEAT
For more than 200 million years, the
coral animals that build most of the
world’s tropical reefs have had a mutu-
ally beneficial relationship with certain algae.
Through photosynthesis, the algae, sheltered
in coral polyp tissues, provide nutrients to the
corals, which emit certain waste products that
nourish the algae. Scientists have found that
corals hosting algae can form reefs up to ten
times faster than those without this relationship.
But when coastal waters get unusually hot
for long stretches, corals eject the algae in
what biologists call a bleaching event. Wide
stretches of reefs turn bone white, and if the
condition lasts long enough, the corals die.
In 2014, a sputtering El Niño warming of the
Pacific combined with the general long-term
warming of ocean waters from climate change
triggered widespread bleaching. But that was
just the beginning. The El Niño of 2015–16,
which tied as the strongest in modern times
with the Pacific warming of 1997–98, sustained
and worsened the bleaching in many regions.
In 2017, the National Oceanic and Atmos-
pheric Administration (NOAA) Coral Reef
Watch team reported that the added ocean
heating from human-caused global warm-
ing was almost assuredly contributing to this
phenomenon, making this the most widespread
and prolonged bleaching on record.
The event had a particularly damaging
impact on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef,
including the reef’s northernmost section,
which, according to scientists, had never
bleached before.
Marine biologists have stressed that corals
are remarkably resilient, noting, for example,
that deeper portions of reefs remained healthy.
But the prolonged episode also drew fresh
attention to the importance of cutting other
threats to reefs, like runoff from agriculture,
untreated sewage, and overfishing. Intensified
conservation efforts could help sustain these
extraordinarily bountiful and diverse ecosys-
tems through this century and beyond.

200 HOME REPAIR SOLUTIONS
THAT ANYONE CAN DO
Working with wood is often a bumpy road, and mishaps are inevitable. One of the most frustrating things that can happen in the course of a project is when a tool is dropped on a piece of carefully prepared stock, leaving an unsightly dent. After the groans and oaths have subsided, it’s rela-tively easy to x the problem. Place a few drops of clean water in the dent and allow it to soak in for about a min-
ute. Place a clean cotton cloth over the dent and use a household iron, on a medium-high setting, to heat the dent. The steam will cause the crushed wood bers to swell, bringing the dented area ush to the surround-ing material. You may have to repeat the procedure two or three times for a stubborn dent. The steam will raise the woodgrain, so you will need to sand the surface once the dent is gone.
Enlarged screw holes can be quickly repaired, we said in March 1972, by lling the
hole with a wooden golf tee. Use a hacksaw to saw the tee ush with the wood’s surface,
then sand and nish.

Angelica 32 The Herbalist's Kitchen
Angelica Angelica archangelica
The whole plante, both leafe, roote, and seede,
is of an excellent comfortable sent, savour and taste.
—John Parkinson, eatre of Plants, 1640
With its distinctly anise and slightly
muscatel flavor, its pagan tradi-
tion and reputation as a magical
herb, and its ability to calm stomach disor-
ders, angelica earned a place in the monas-
tic gardens of medieval times. According
to Rob Talbot and Robin Whiteman in
Brother Cadfael’s Herb Garden, angel-
ica water was used in the infirmary at
Shrewsbury Abbey in England, perhaps
as a tonic, a digestive, or for coughs and
cold. Nicholas Culpeper recommended a
double angelica preparation as protection
against poison and the plague. His advice was to make angelic water by steeping the
arial parts in water and then mixing in powdered angelica root. Indeed, during the Great
Plague of London in 1665, people were grasping at roots for protection and angelica was
the go-to “bite and chaw” herb of the time. In fact, legend holds that the powerful healing
action of angelica in preventing contagion was revealed in a monk’s dream by an angel
during those black days.
FLAVOR
All parts of angelica are sweetly anise with spikes of celery and juniper.
PARTS TO USE
Use all parts of the angelica plant: seeds, stems or stalks, leaves, and flowers.
CULINARY USES
Use young, fresh angelica leaves in teas
and to flavor sugar, syrups, and salt;
mature fresh leaves make a great wrap
for steamed or grilled foods. Fresh
chopped angelica leaf teams well with
rhubarb for relish and other preserves,
softening the tartness of the fruit. The
leaves and stems or stalks add a touch of
anise to poaching liquids, stuffing, mari-
nades, sauces, and dips. Eat young stalks
as a vegetable or candy them for use in
baking and cake decorating. Use the
seeds and roots in flavorings for liqueur
and teas and you can steam or boil the
roots like you would a vegetable.
Angelica is part of the Tudor Physic Garden border at Sudeley Castle, Winchcombe,
Gloucestershire, England.
HEALTH BENEFITSAngelica root contains antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic, and carminative constituents that have an effect on the lungs, stomach, intestines, and blood. e roots and sometimes the seeds are used medicinally in tinctures. Because it is a warming, diaphoretic, diuretic herb, angelica may be used to aid rheumatic complaints, stomach cramps, digestion, coughs, and colds. In India, it is used to treat anorexia nervosa and flatulent dyspepsia.
CAUTION: Large doses can act as calcium-channel blockers that lower blood pressure and widen blood vessels. Take medical doses only on the advice of a medical practitioner and do not exceed the recommended dose. Angelica is not recommended during pregnancy.
GROWING ANGELICA
A tall (over 6 foot), stately biennial, angelica prefers cooler climates and fairly wet
conditions but adapts if you plant it in partial shade and rich soil. It flowers in June
the second year and self-seeds. If cut back almost to the root, and thus not allowed to
set seed, it may live one or more years.

VARIETIES
Angelica joins parsley, chervil, fennel, and caraway in the Angelica joins parsley, chervil, fennel, and caraway in the Angelica Umbelliferae family but
stands out as the tallest and most aromatic. There are between 40 and 60 varieties of
angelica, with Angelica archangelica or “garden” angelica being the most common in
Europe and North America.
ANGELICA ATROPURPUREA: Commonly
called Alexanders, this smaller, purple-
tinged variety is native to North
America, Europe, and other subarctic
regions. It was once highly regarded as a
medicinal plant.
ANGELICA SYLVESTRIS: Found growing
wild in parts of northeastern North
America, this species inhabits woodlands,
fields, stream banks, and marshy areas.
Due to its prolific nature (one plant
produces thousands of seeds), some
regions have labeled it an invasive weed.
ANGELICA GIGAS: This dark purple
ornamental originates from China,
Japan, and Korea and grows wild in the
same conditions as A. sylvestris. Use this
plant as a unique, bee-attracting plant
in the garden, but do not eat it and note
that some people are sensitive to its sap.
ANISE HERBSAnise is the licorice flavor that is predominant in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) but also detected in other herbs like angelica. e licorice flavor molecule is called anethole and we associate all plants that are high in it with the anise taste of pure licorice. Anithole is soluble in water, which is what causes absinthe to form a milky white or pale green cloud (called louche) when water is added to the drink. Here are a few other herbs with varying degrees of anise flavor.
BASIL: Anise is a subtle undertone to the nutmeg, mint, spice, and menthol tones of the leaves. All basil varieties are widely used in pesto or other sauces but are especially good with tomatoes.
CHERVIL: Leaves are delicately sweet and subtly anise. Chervil is essential in the French fines herbes blend and goes well with leeks, beans, and potatoes.
DILL: Leaves taste of anise with lemon. Dill is a key ingredient in tartar sauce and is essential for pickles.
FENNEL: All parts have an anise aroma and taste that is less pungent than dill. Fennel is excellent with fish, cream sauce, and soups, especially chowder.
LICORICE: Fresh and dried roots have a clear, sweet anise flavor with slightly salty, earthy undertones. Licorice can be finely grated into baked goods, puddings, cream, and other dishes; decoctions are used to flavor drinks, sauces, or syrups.
SWEET CICELY: Leaves are sweet, with licorice and lemon notes. Sweet cicely is good with almonds and is used in sweet or savory dishes and beverages.
TARRAGON: Leaves have a hot and peppery anise flavor. Tarragon complements soft cheeses, puddings, and fish dishes.
WORMWOOD: Leaves are bitter anise. When combined with sugar and water, wormwood lowers the bitterness in the alcoholic drink known as absinthe.

we will separate, and take our camels where we may think fit. You see there is nothing but what is strictly equitable in this division; for if you give me forty camels, you will procure by my means wherewithal to purchase thousands.
Although avarice made me loath to forego so much, I had no alternative but to accept the terms the dervise offered. When he had heard my decision he led me to the place.
It was a valley situated between two high mountains, so secluded that there was no fear of discovery. When we arrived the dervise bade me stop my camels, and he quickly collected some sticks and proceeded to kindle a fire, pronouncing over it an incantation. A dense smoke arose from the fire, and when this had cleared away I perceived that the sides of the cliff opposite to us had rolled back, revealing a magnificent palace in the side of the mountain, with great heaps of treasure lying about.
I was as rapacious as a bird of prey in the way I seized the gold and filled my sacks, until I perceived that the dervise paid more heed to the jewels, when I followed his example, so that we took away more jewels than gold. Among other things the dervise took a small golden vase, which he showed me contained nothing more than a glutinous ointment; and after we had loaded our camels he closed the rock by using some mystic words.
We now divided our camels, each taking forty, and travelled together till we came to the great road, where we were to part; the dervise to go to Bussorah, and I to Bagdad. We embraced each other with great joy, and taking our leave pursued our different routes.
I had not gone far before the demon of ingratitude and envy took possession of my heart, and I deplored the loss of my camels, Revealing a magnificent palace in the side of the mountain

flew into a passion, threw a little of his incense into the fire, and pronounced two magical words. Immediately the stone moved into its place, with the earth over it in the same manner as it lay at the arrival of the magician and Aladdin.
This action plainly showed that the magician was not his uncle, but some adventurer who sought to possess the lamp, of which he had read in the magic books. And, moreover, it was but recently that he had learned where the wonderful lamp was concealed. He had also discovered that he must receive the lamp from another’s hand, so he chanced to select Aladdin, whose life he reckoned as nought.
When the magician saw that all his hopes were frustrated, he returned the same day to Africa; but kept away from the town, lest Aladdin’s absence should be noticed and questions asked. When Aladdin found himself shut in, he cried, and called out to his uncle, to tell him he was ready to give him the lamp; but in vain, since his cries could not be heard. He descended to the bottom of the steps, with a design to get into the garden, but the door, which was opened before by enchantment, was now shut by the same means. He then redoubled his cries and tears, sat down on the steps, without any hopes of ever seeing light again, and in a melancholy certainty of passing from the present darkness into that of a speedy death. Clasping his hands with an entire resig-nation to the will of God, he said, There is no strength or power but in the great and high God, and in joining his hands he rubbed the ring which the magician had put on his finger. Immediately a genie of frightful aspect rose out of the earth, his head reaching the roof of the vault, and said to him, What wouldst thou have? I am ready to obey thee as thy slave, and the slave of all who

is nothing written. Turn over some more leaves, replied the head. The king went on, putting always his finger to his mouth, until he found himself suddenly taken with an extraordinary fit, his eye-sight failed, and he fell down at the foot of the throne in violent convulsions.
When the physician Douban, or rather his head, saw that the poison had taken effect, and that the king had but a few moments
to live; Tyrant, it cried, now you see how princes are treated, who, abusing their authority, cut off innocent men: God punishes soon or late their
injustice and cruelty. Scarcely had the head spo-ken these words, when the king fell down dead,
and the head itself lost what life it had.As soon as the fisherman had concluded the
history of the Greek king and his physician Douban, he applied it to the genie, whom he still kept shut up in the vessel. If
the king, said he, had suffered the physician to live, God would have
continued his life also. The case is the same with thee, O genie; but I am obliged, in my turn, to be
equally hard-hearted to thee.Hear me one word more, cried the genie; I prom-
ise to do thee no hurt; nay, far from that, I will show thee a way to become exceedingly rich.

by Whitney Stewart, illustrated by Christiane Engel
It’s a big, tasty world out there! What’s on Your Plate? takes kids on an illustrated tour through the cuisines of 14 countries to see how people internationally prepare, eat, and think about food. For each cuisine, there’s an overview of the country and its native foods, pronunciations and descriptions of popular dishes, an easy recipe, and a crop map. The fun elements will excite young foodies!
WHITNEY STEWART will travel far for a story. She’s trekked in a Himalayan snowstorm with Sir Edmund Hillary, interviewed the Dalai Lama in India, and visited Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma. She’s worked as a puppeteer in France and has dug in former WWII battlefields in rural Poland. She is the author of travel stories, multiple children’s books, and her new mindfulness activity cards, Mindful Kids. When she is not writing or traveling, she teaches mindfulness and meditation to children.
CHRISTIANE ENGEL is an award-winning illustrator and children’s book writer. She loves creating quirky characters, map illustrations, and using her own hand-lettering in her projects across publishing and advertising. Her work has also been applied to animated programs and puzzles—one of which won a puzzle-of-the-year award. Christiane lives by the sea in South East England with her family.

Up in the LeavesThe True Story of the Central Park Treehouses
by Shira Boss, illustrated by Jamey Christoph
“Bob lived in the big city. The city was very crowded.”
This charming picture book tells the true story of Bob Redman, who took refuge from the noise and the crowds of New York City in the natural beauty of Central Park—where he covertly built a series of amazing treehouses. He played cat-and-mouse with the park workers until he was finally caught. But his story has a happy surprise . . .
SHIRA BOSS is a writer who lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, three blocks from Central Park. Up in the Leaves is her second book. She earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University, including a master’s in Journalism. When her Japanese maple tree needed pruning, several people suggested she call arborist Bob Redman. He said it was the smallest tree he has had ever worked on (about four feet high, in a pot). Now they have two sons, two whippets—and many more trees. Connect with them at shiraboss.com.
JAMEY CHRISTOPH’s illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and in several award-winning children’s books, including Gordon Parks: How the Photographer Captured Black and White America by Carole Boston Weatherford (Albert Whitman). He works out of his 1920s home in Cleveland Heights, OH, with his crazy dogs, Owen and Jack.

Gloria’s VoiceThe Story of Gloria Steinem,
Feminist, Activist, Leaderby Aura Lewis
Gloria Steinem started a movement that changed our world—and this picture-book biography, which follows Steinem from childhood through her political awakening and beyond, introduces young readers to the pioneering feminist leader. Using gorgeous watercolor illustrations by debut author Aura Lewis, Gloria’s Voice brings the message of equality to a new generation as it explains Steinem’s motivations and beliefs, as well as the obstacles she faced in fighting for women’s rights.
AURA LEWIS is an illustrator based in New York City. She is a recent graduate of the MFA program in the Illustration as Visual Essay program at the School of Visual Arts.
When Gloria is ten years old, her parents decide to live
in separate homes. They are very different, and
their differences make it hard for
them to live together.
Gloria misses her papa,
who travels far
for business.
But the hardest part is when her mama falls ill and can no
longer look after Gloria or herself. Sometimes, it’s as if
Gloria is the grown-up and her mama is the child.
Deep down in her heart of hearts,
Gloria wishes her mama had
followed her dreams.
Gloria grows up. She feels ready to leave her small town and do
something big! She dreams of going to New York City.
But first, she wants to travel like her father.
So Gloria journeys across the ocean to India.
She travels with only a sari, a cup, and a comb.
She sees beautiful sights but also a lot of suffering.
There is inequality between the rich and the poor,
and there are wars in the villages.
Gloria joins an aid team that holds meetings for the
villagers. They come and talk about their fears, and Gloria
listens. “Thank you,” they say and bring her gifts of rice.
“We never thought anyone from the outside cared.” Gloria is
overjoyed knowing that she’s making a difference in people’s lives.

Praise for Mango Delight: ★“Hyman marries traditional tween elements with a fresh and original plot, and his multicultural cast sparkles with individuality and authenticity. . . . The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific, educational, and cultural institutions. Each year, millions of visitors experience the Museum’s 45 permanent exhibition halls, which include world-famous diorama halls and fossil halls as well as the Rose Center for Earth and Space and the Hayden Planetarium. The Museum’s scientific collections, only a tiny fraction of which are on view, contain more than 33 million specimens and artifacts. These collections are an invaluable resource for the Museum’s 200 scientists, for graduate students in the Museum’s Richard Gilder Graduate School—the only museum-based PhD-granting program in the Western Hemisphere—and for researchers around the world. Clownfish Aren’t So Funnyby Matt Weiss
While sharks, whales, and dolphins get the attention, the real underwater drama happens in the nooks and crannies of coral reefs. Some of the coolest critters there are no bigger than a golf ball, stay hidden from plain sight, and are real killers. Featuring absolutely stunning close-up photography, Clownfish Aren’t So Funny tells the compelling stories of the ocean’s smaller, but still deadly, inhabitants.
MATT WEISS Is an award-winning photographer, journalist, dive expedition organizer, and filmmaker. He is the author of Sterling’s Please Be Nice To Sharks, and has also contributed to many international publications, including Sport Diving Magazine, National Geographic, and Asian Geographic. When he’s not in the ocean diving with sharks and other undersea creatures, he’s the publisher of DivePhotoGuide.com, the world’s largest underwater photography publication. Matt lives in Brooklyn, NY.
