Learning objective

In this lesson our aim is to:• learn how to use the past tense in French•Be able to conjugate verbs using avoir in the passé composé

Page 2: Steps to Success : Be creative Be part of an experiment into spaced learning

Le passé composé

Meaning the past

Meaning compound / composite(made of two parts)

Page 3: Steps to Success : Be creative Be part of an experiment into spaced learning

When do we use it?• We use the passé composé when we are talking

about an action in the past which is completed.

Eg: I ate a fondue.

Present: I am in class

Past: I ate a fondue(the action is completed)

Passé: J’ai mangé une fondue

Page 4: Steps to Success : Be creative Be part of an experiment into spaced learning

How do we make it?We said it’s a composite tense so we need two things…

1. We need the right part of “avoir “ meaning “to have” (conjugated in the present tense)

Or the right part of “être” meaning “to be” (conjugated in the present tense)

2. + a past participle.

That is just a conjugated verb that indicates we are talking about the past….equivalent to “been” as in “I have been to the cinema”

I will show you how to make them later.
