President’s MessageI would like to thank all the members who took time off to attend the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, 6th May. Although this was not an election AGM, the turnout was good and this enabled us to discuss and approve the items that were tabled. We can now turn our attention to implementing the plans and proposals that were discussed.

Members were given some details of the work involved in the golf course renovation over the next twelve months, including the plans for implementing a nine-hole playing course. There was a lively debate over whether to permit walking on the course. In the end, a happy compromise was arrived at to permit walkers for nine holes in the evening, but not for a full 18-hole game due to the distance between the temporary 9th green and 10th tee. Walking that distance would inevitably and unnecessarily hold up play at the 10th hole on the turn-around.

I attended the first briefing and discussion with the renovation contractor and came out confident that in twelve months when the work is fully completed, we will have a very good rejuvenated course to play on. Course maintenance costs will then be less than pre-renovation, and we can look forward to generating more green fees income from guests and corporate games. This is part of the plan to improve our Club’s revenue and finance.

With the budget approved at the AGM, we are now able to start work to reconstruct the new Tee Garden at the site of one of the tennis courts. This will be a very good alternative to Yan Palace as a venue for large Club and private events, in air-conditioning comfort and banqueting facilities for up to 300 guests. Again, this will be another new source of income for the Club. We plan to commission the facility by early November.

The Water Hazard was remodelled in 2008 to cater to both members and private karaoke singing. Over the years, the three private karaoke rooms have been significantly under utilised. Work has started to reduce the private rooms to a single unit and expand the main hall. When completed in early September, it will be a multi-purpose facility still catering to karaoke lovers, with a private room for up to twenty people, a space for those who wish to have a quiet conversation and drink shielded from the buzz of the main bar area. With a live band performing on Saturday evenings, I envisage this will be the ‘happening’ place for our Club members after sunset. In recent times, we have held Club events very successfully here. With the expanded space, there is potential to hold even bigger Club and private events.

In recent months, we have seen an increase in patronage of our food and beverage outlets, especially at the Golfers’ Terrace, and on weekends members occasionally may have to queue for a table. This is a happy problem to have, but we have decided that we will open up the T Bar for dining as well on weekends to alleviate this happy problem. Members may find this a new experience, dining right next to a lush green golf course. There will be lots of exciting new happenings at the T Bar to look out for too.

As work gets underway on the golf course, members may have to put up with some temporary inconvenience, be it the reduced opportunity to play your regular golf game, or seeing more construction workers, equipment or vehicles on site. We request your understanding and cooperation, and I hope like me, you can see the bright sight ahead.

I wish all our Muslim members, staff and friends ‘Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri’, and to all of us ‘Happy National Day’.

Majulah Singapura!

Kwek Chiow Yiap Patrick

Captain’sMessage

Oh Kian Beng

Renovation works on our golf course has commenced on 6 June 2016. I would like to once again thank our golfers for your understanding and patience during the period of renovation.

Due to the golf course renovation, there are only nine holes open for play which inevitably leads to a reduced number of available golfing slots. In view of this, we have adjusted the schedule of our monthly medals so as not to deprive golfers, as much as possible, from playing social games. During the renovation period, the Men’s and Ladies’ Medals will be held on separate weekends (instead of being previously held on the same weekend) - the Men’s Medals will still be played on a Saturday (full day) but the Ladies’ Medals will be held on a Sunday (morning) of another week. We look forward to members’ continued active participation in our monthly medals.

In the last month leading up to our golf course renovation, we held the Founder’s Day Golf Tournament on 1 May and the Inter-Club Friendly with Seremban International Golf Club on 28 May. Response to both events was great and I am sure everyone who joined us have found it especially memorable as that was the last time they played for an event on our “old” course, in its pre-renovated state.

Our Club organised overseas golf trips have been gaining popularity with our golfers as not only do they get the opportunity to play on other courses, the trips also allow them to bond and gel with fellow members, bringing camaraderie to a whole new level. Some of the golfers have also been coming forth to us with enquiries, eager to embark on the next trip with us. And yes, we hear you. A 3D2N golfing trip to Tering Bay and another 5D4N trip to Chiangmai have already been planned, with the former taking place from 26 to 28 August and the latter, 28 October to 1 November. Though we are not able to promise that you will hit your perfect shot during the trip, we can assure you a trip full of laughter, fun and simply, great memories for you to pack back home. So, put down your name with us for one of the two trips... or why not even BOTH trips!

Here’s another piece of good news. We have recently sealed yet another two reciprocal agreements - Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, China and Handara Golf & Resort in Bali, Indonesia. These are two well-known clubs and so I believe I do not need to elaborate much on what these clubs have to offer. Book a date and enjoy your game on these beautiful courses.

I will like to end off my message with an important message to all golfers. The SGA will be launching the Centralised Handicapping System (CHS) for its Ordinary and Associate Members on 4 August 2016. Golfers will have to participate in the CHS in order to have a valid USGA Handicap Index. The CHS will allow golfers to access their handicap indexes and post scores anytime, anywhere as long as they have access to the internet. Members of SGA Ordinary and Associate Members must register at the SGA CHS website at www.chs.sga.org.sg before they can use the CHS. Registration has been open from 20 June and will close on 25 July. For more information on the CHS, please turn to pages 12, 13 and 14 of this publication.

On 4 August 2016, SGA will launch the Centralised Handicapping System (CHS) for its Ordinary and Associate Members. The CHS will provide a modern and unified platform for golf handicapping, changing the way golfers perform their handicapping activities, and introducing consistency in calculation of golfers’ Handicap Index.

Members of SGA Ordinary and Associate Members must register at the SGA CHS website at chs.sga.org.sg before they can use CHS. Registration will open on 20 June 2016 and close on 25 July 2016.

During registration, golfers are required to fill in the data requested and indicate that they give consent to their data being collected, used and/or disclosed. This may include their name, gender, golf club(s) of which they are a member of, membership number, Handicap Index, scoring records, dates and places of play.

Golfers who have successfully registered and have had their membership details authenticated by their home club will be sent an email on 4 August 2016 to activate their account. They will also be requested to set their password before they can start using CHS. In addition, golfers will be required to give their consent again before activation is successful. Once this is done, golfers are free to post their scores immediately anywhere and anytime.

Access Your Handicap Index and Post Scores Anytime, AnywhereGolfers will now be able to perform all their handicapping activities via multiple channels, including web, their iOS or Android devices and their club’s terminals. With such user-friendly options to choose from, posting scores and checking handicaps will be a breeze.

1. What is the SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS)?Ans: The SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS), as its name implies, is a system that computes all handicapping scoring data centrally and distributes the processed handicap data to all SGA Members for their Handicap Committees to review before release to CHS. Scores can be posted anywhere and anytime either by the clubs or individually by golfers through club terminals, via the Internet or through the phone app. CHS also tracks golfers who play at any golf courses in Singapore and requires that a score be posted in order for golfers to avoid being awarded a penalty score.

2. How different is it from the current SGA National Handicap Book (NHB)?Ans: As far as display of golfers’ Handicap Index is concerned, CHS is no different from the National Handicap Book (NHB). However, NHB only displays the handicap data of golfers and does not process them. All scores posted either by players or clubs go directly to their respective club’s system where they are computed separately. Thereafter, the Handicap Index that have been generated are submitted by all SGA Members to NHB for display.

3. How do I register for the SGA CHS?Ans: Golfers who are members of SGA Ordinary and Associate Members can register directly for CHS by logging in to the “Register for CHS” button on the CHS website (chs.sga.org.sg). Golfers are required to fill in the data requested and indicate that they give consent to their data being collected, used and/or disclosed for CHS purposes. These may include their name, gender, home club, membership number, Handicap Index, scoring records, dates of play and places of play.

4. Can I register for the SGA CHS but not give consent for CHS to use my personal handicap data?Ans: No. Golfers who do not give consent will not be able to complete their registration for CHS. As such, they will not be able to use CHS.

5. Why must I activate my CHS account after registration?Ans: Golfers who have successfully registered and have had their membership details authenticated by their home club will be sent an email to activate their account. They will also be requested to set their password before they can start using CHS. In addition, golfers will be required to give their consent again before activation is successful. Once this is done, golfers are free to post their scores immediately anywhere and anytime.

Member Survey Lucky Draw Results

6. Will I be given a new CHS number?Ans: No. Golfers need to only select their home club and key in their club membership number to log in to CHS once they have successfully activated their CHS account.

7. What happens if I missed the CHS initial registration cut-off date?Ans: Once CHS is officially launched on 4 August 2016, golfers who have missed registering for CHS will still be able to do so. The process is similar and when their CHS account is activated, golfers may start posting their scores immediately. Golfers’ handicap history from NHB will be retained as at 1 August 2016 revision. However, their newly calculated handicap data will only be displayed at the next revision date.

8. How do I register for CHS if I do not have an email and do not have the means to obtain one?Ans: Golfers who do not have an email but wish to use CHS will have to register through their home club. Their home club will register and activate their account on their behalf. However, such golfers will not be able to post their scores online. Their clubs will manually post their scores to CHS for them. As such, all golfers are encouraged to go online to make full use of CHS!

9. Do I have an option not to participate in CHS?Ans: Yes. However, that means that you will not have a valid USGA Handicap Index.

10. Do I need to give my details when registering to play at other club’s golf courses?Ans: Yes, you will be asked to provide your home club and membership number to the club where you are playing. This will allow CHS to capture your details and require you to post a score after completing your game.

11. Can I play in other clubs without a CHS issued USGA Handicap Index?Ans: This will depend on the clubs that you wish to play at. Currently, not all SGA Ordinary Members require that golfers possess a valid USGA Handicap Index to play at their courses. However, this may change and golfers may need a USGA Handicap Index before they can play.

12. Can I play in golf events like charity opens or corporate golf games without a CHS issued USGA Handicap Index?Ans: Again this depends on the organisers of such events. However, golfers without a valid USGA Handicap Index may face complications if there is a claim, for example, for a hole-in-one prize. Most insurance companies would require proof of USGA Handicap Index when processing such prizes.

13. Can my home club issue me with a handicap?Ans: All SGA Members are sub-licenced by SGA to issue USGA Handicap Index to their members using SGA CHS. Any handicaps that are issued outside SGA CHS are not recognised.

14. When is the CHS revision date?Ans: The CHS revision date is the 1st of each month. However, the cut-off date is the 26th day of the preceding month. Any scores posted after that date will be processed in the following month.

15. How do I post my scores?Ans: Golfers can post their scores anywhere and anytime using their club’s terminal, the internet or through their iOS or Android phone app.

16. Can I still post my scores using my club’s scorecard?Ans: Yes, you may still post scores using a scorecard. However, this means your club will have to post your score to CHS. We encourage golfers to take full advantage of CHS and post scores themselves. Please note that you should not submit your scorecard to your club if you have already posted your scores directly to CHS.

17. What happens if I do not post my score after a game?Ans: If you do not post an acceptable score within 13 days of playing, CHS will post a penalty score equal to the lowest Handicap Differential in your scoring record on the 14th day.

18. How do I change an incorrectly posted score?Ans: An incorrect score that has been posted can only be changed by your club. Please approach your club staff to make any corrections to scores that you have posted before the next revision date.

19. I am a member of several clubs. Do I have to designate a home club?Ans: Yes, you must designate a home club for handicapping purposes. Your home club should be the club where you play the most golf.

20. Will CHS replace the role of my club Handicap Committee?Ans: No, CHS does not replace the responsibilities of your club Handicap Committee. Club Handicap Committees will, at their monthly meeting, review all handicapping data before they are released for display on CHS.

21. Is my club Handicap Committee still responsible for my Handicap Index?Ans: Yes. Your club Handicap Committee is the only authority that can issue or adjust your Handicap Index.

22. Do club Handicap Committees still have the responsibility to conduct its monthly meeting to review the Handicap Index of its members?Ans: Yes. CHS does not absolve the responsibilities of club Handicap Committees to ensure the integrity of the Handicap Index that are issued to their members.

23. What happens to my CHS handicap scoring records if I am no longer a member of my club?Ans: If you are no longer a member of an SGA Ordinary or Associate Member, you will not be eligible to hold a USGA Handicap Index. However, your handicap scoring records will be kept in CHS for up to a year and will be transferred to your new club, if you decide to join one.

24. What happens to my child who is no longer a junior member of my club and is not eligible to maintain his/her Handicap Index under my membership?Ans: Clubs’ junior members’ terms and conditions will apply. CHS is available only to members of SGA Ordinary and Associate Members.

“This is my third trip organised by Jack (Assistant Golf Manager). Like the previous outbound golf tours to Chiangmai and inter-club tournaments in Kluang and Segamat, I have enjoyed myself thoroughly in this trip to Haikou. It was a well organised trip to a fabulous city with cool spring weather. The 4 courses are beautiful and interesting in terms of varying levels of difficulty of play and characters. There were also plenty of time and opportunities for bonding amongst the Warren participants. Thanks a bundle for his fine efforts and I look forward to more such trips for the Warren family.”

“Sam (F&B Service Staff) has been very helpful and cheerful in his service. He takes pride in his work despite it being a busy night. An excellent worker!”

“We came here for dinner and was looking forward to savour the smoked duck salad. To our disappointment, the menu has changed and the smoked duck salad has been taken out of the menu. Teddy (F&B Service Staff), who was serving us, was extremely helpful and friendly. He went the extra mile to address our need and got us the smoked duck salad.

We would really like to compliment him on his service and he has definitely made our visit to the Club very enjoyable. We will definitely be back for more of good food and excellent service! Keep it up!”

Warren Young GolferDenise Wong

he first time little Denise picked up a golf club and hit the ball, it wasn’t exactly ‘love at first tee’. There was no spark. But a challenge by family friends that promises extra bucks for spending proved too hard for any nine-year-old to just walk away from.

Fast-forward seven years, now at 16, Denise has had her fair share of success in golf. Representing Warren, she had played impressively in the National Ranking 2015 and HSBC Youth games, and had recently earned herself a place in the SGA Development Squad.

We managed to catch up with Denise and speak about her aspiration and what motivates her to perform better.

T

Profile Feature

Who introduced you to golf and at what age?I was introduced to golf at the age of nine by my father. At that time, my brother was taking lessons at a nearby driving range, and my father would bring me along every Saturday. As he wanted me to pick up the sport as well, he bought a club and taught me the basics. Initially I was not very into it, but my father’s friends would give me money if I hit the ball into any of the little nets, and that made me want to ‘practise’ more. Slowly, I started to get more interested in golf, and my coach at that time made it very fun for me and I was always excited to go for training.

So tell us how has your journey in golf been.My journey as an athlete has not all been smooth sailing, I stopped training at age twelve to focus more on my Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), and that resulted in me being a little ‘rusty’. I knew I had to train even harder to catch up for the lost time, which as a result, led to an injury. The injury had affected me both during and after training, as I was constantly feeling pain. I was struggling a lot to play well in my first two years in the Singapore Sports School. I was always nervous before a tournament and had very low confidence in my own game, and mentally I was just not strong enough. I felt like my performances were constantly a disappointment to everyone supporting me. However after switching to another coach in mid of 2014, I started to get better results, I started playing better and my scores were not fluctuating as much. Gradually, I started to doubt myself less and gained more confidence in my games, and at the same time learned to manage myself better during a tournament.

You’ve made quite an impression on some of the competitions you took part in, namely the National Ranking 2015 and the HSBC Youth games. How encouraged are you by your ability to compete at the national level?Usually going into competitions, I will tend to feel extremely nervous, and I am always afraid that I will not be able to perform well. However, I have managed to surprise myself a few times where I would go into the round thinking that I will not be able to play well but end up playing better than expected. One such memorable tournament was the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge held at NSRCC Kranji last year. The days leading up to the tournament, it felt like my game was a mess and my ball striking was especially bad. However I surprised myself and managed to shoot scores that allowed me to be in the first position on the first and second day. Despite not winning the tournament, and feeling a little disappointed, I was overall quite happy that I managed to surpass my own expectations. With a few good performances and encouraging words from my coaches, I am very determined to become a much better golf player.

What are your aspirations? Will we get to see you play professionally in the near future? At this point, playing golf professionally is far from my mind. I am taking it one step at a time. But I will definitely play every game that comes to the best of my ability and see how far I can go in golf. I would love to play my games well consistently and get into a good university through golf.

I am very happy and honored to be inducted into the SGA Development Squad. I hope that this will motivate me to train harder to improve in order to be promoted to the National Squad.

What steps, according to you, could be taken to encourage golf for the young?I think that it is necessary for young people like myself to find a friend or friends to play golf with to make the game more fun. Training can easily feel like a chore, rather than something that you are doing to have fun; so having a friend to train with can help make it more enjoyable. For those playing golf competitively, I think that they should go into training knowing what they want to achieve after the end of the training session. Hitting tons of golf balls is not going to help improve your game because practice does not make perfect, it makes permanent.

I visited my son in Arizona, United States in May this year where he lives and works. During the one-month stay, we drove to visit three famous US national parks on separate weekends. The first was the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The others were Yosemite National Park and Death Valley National Park, both located in California.

After a six-hour drive, we arrived at the Grand Canyon. All the US national parks adopt a family-friendly policy in which they charge US$30 per car for one week’s pass of visit, regardless of the number of persons in the car.

The Grand Canyon literally overwhelmed our senses with its immense size and scale. The natural wonder is about 450km long, up to 30km wide and has a depth of almost 2,000 metres. Nearly two billion years of Earth’s geological history have occurred as the Colorado River and its tributaries are cut out by natural forces exposing layers of geological rock like our local layered cake “kueh lapis”.

We wanted to take mule rides to the canyon valley floor, but the rides were fully sold out that day. My son then suggested that we do hiking instead. Wow, we hiked down and came up after five hours, completely exhausted as to me, it was equivalent to walking 36 holes of golf.

Our next stop was the Yosemite National Park. It is one of the largest and least fragmented granite rock formations in the world. The park supports a diversity of plants including the giant sequoias and animals like grizzly bears, pumas, coyote, foxes, and bighorn sheep. The park has cliffs and mountains ranging from 640 to 4,000 metres.

The most famous and spectacular of all is El Capitan (Spanish for The Captain or The Chief), a vertical rock formation in Yosemite rising from base to summit at 900 metres. This iconic granite monolith is any photographer’s must-take picture to “WhatsApp” to your loved ones and friends back home. It is also a popular challenge for ardent rock climbers to scale up the sheer granite face, though its peak can be reached by many hiking routes through the valley.

Several hundred mature giant sequoia trees are found in Mariposa Grove in Yosemite. A typical full-grown sequoia could be 60 metres (20 storeys) tall, and has a heavily buttressed base with a circumference of 25 metres. Just imagine that about 20 persons are needed to hold hands together to form a circle round its waist!

Have you also just been on a holiday to somewhere exotic or out of the ordinary? Or have you embarked on a exhilarating trip to a golfing destination? Send us your stories and photos (email to marcom warren.org.sg), and share your traveller’s tales with your fellow members!

The Death Valley is one morbid place I have heard of since my schooldays and wanted very much to see what it’s like. It is the hottest (attaining a record 56̊C in one summer), driest (barely 40 mm of rain every year) and lowest national park.

Like the other two national parks, this natural environment has been shaped largely by its geology. The deep valley is formed and contains the oldest rocks dating back to at least 1.7 billion years ago.

Greetings from the Grand Canyon.

Layer and layer of colourful rocks line the vast steep-sided canyon.

Hiking down and up the canyon floor takes at least five hours.

This dry, uninhabitable landscape looks like moon surface.

Article contributed by:Lawrence Chin

No visit to the Death Valley would be complete without a stop at the lowest point in North America, 86 metres below sea level, called Badwater Basin. The story is that a traveller was coming through and saw that there was water for his mule to drink, However, because the water is so full of salt, the mule refused to drink it. Hence, the name Badwater was given to the place. The salt basin is vast in area, almost the size of Singapore’s main island.
