Role of the Workplace
Heritage Branch -Investing in our environment and heritage and regulating to protect our environment and heritage
Natural Heritage Section Progress National Heritage assessments (natural values) - Deliver funding for World Heritage grants and seek to influence other funding opportunities e.g. National Environmental Science Program, Regional LandPartnerships. Deliver an annual World Heritage workshop and assist state governments with business planning and heritage management for
National Heritage and World Heritage - Provide advice on updating World Heritage management plans and engage in refresh of heritage agreements (example: Wet Tropics Regional Agreement).
Major Tasks

Assist in assessment of properties for inclusion on the National Heritage List
Involvement in a capacity building project for National Heritage assessments
Mapping and sharing knowledge about heritage regulatory and administrative processes under the EPBC Act, including: heritage management plans, Australian Heritage Database and assessment processe, Heritage Branch Business Processes Involvement in staff-led seminars and communities of practice for preparing advice for project referral under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act stakeholder engagement ,National and World Heritage nomination process and listing,

Organising information sessions, meetings and/or training with internal and external stakeholders such as: Environmental Standards Division for EPBC Act assessments and approvals, and compliance and enforcement General Counsel Branch for relevant legislation State governments, Australian Heritage Council and National and World Heritage property managers
Major Project for Placement
Assist in research for the National Heritage assessments of Coral Sea andChristmas Island
Research on World Heritage properties and provide on-going support, advice and management options for sites
Involvement in staff-led meetings, seminars and training
Context
The Natural Heritage Section (NHS) is within the Heritage Branch of the Heritage, Reef and Marine Division. The intern will be placed within a sub team of the NHS comprised of 4 individuals (three APS 6 staff and one EL1). The proposed work is independent with a collaborative approach across the branch. The intern will receive guidance, support and direction from their supervisor and be able to utilise flexible working arrangements.
Along with the day to day work undertaken on the conservation, protection and sustainable management of Australia's heritage (with natural heritage values), the NHS experiences high a number of requests for urgent briefing on topical heritage issues.
We work collaboratively within the Division and the broader department to gather and interpret information and deliver on these issues. Involvement in the preparation of urgent ministerial correspondence, media requests, briefing and cords is likely to occur during the internship. Some of the work undertaken includes statutory and policy timeframes and the intern will be required to work within these timeframes.
The intern will be encouraged to plan, manage and set their own work goals and priorities for their allocated work with the guidance from their supervisor. The diversity of the work undertaken within the NHS and the collaborative style of work in the Heritage Branch will expose the intern to different working approaches while also providing the opportunity to gain valuable skills and an understanding of how the Division and the Department operates.
