Stepping Into Internship Program - Position Description The Australian Network on Disability’s Stepping Into program is a paid internship scheme that matches talented university students with disability with roles in leading Australian businesses. This includes inclusion and diversity policy, programs to increase representation of diversity groups in the APS workforce and in leadership roles, and initiatives to improve recruitment, retention and capability of a diverse workforce. Position Overview

The Group

The Inclusion Group within the Australian Public Service Commission is responsible for a range of policies, programs and initiatives to improve workforce participation and equity outcomes across the Australian Public Service (APS). This includes inclusion and diversity policy, programs to increase representation of diversity groups in the APS workforce and in leadership roles, and initiatives to improve recruitment, retention and capability of a diverse workforce.

The Team

The Policy team sits within the Inclusion Group and is responsible for developing strategic policy to support a diverse and inclusive APS workforce. The team supports agencies to implement and share initiatives and best practice approaches crucial to ensuring inclusive workplace cultures. The team assists agencies to achieve the aims of APS and Commonwealth-wide diversity strategies which drive workplace gender equality, increase Indigenous representation, and support employment of people with disability.

The Role

As a Stepping Into Intern in the Policy team you will have the opportunity to contribute to a range of policy tasks which support the enhancement of a diverse and inclusive APS workforce. The work you do will make a difference to existing and future APS employees. Under the guidance of your supervisor, your work will support public sector agencies to meet the aims of APS-wide and Commonwealth diversity strategies and may include:

Liaising and collaborating with colleagues across a range of business areas, internal and external to Australian Public Service Commission (APSC);

Supporting and assisting with project management and coordination;

Undertaking research and analysis to contribute to policy development;

Contributing Secretariat support for working groups and Networks;

Supporting the organisation and management of events;

Assisting the team with reports, briefs, correspondence and advice;

Drafting communication materials such as media news articles, speeches or social media posts.

Contributing to team agile work practices including participation in daily kick-start meetings, retrospective sessions and sprint activities.

Skills and personal attributes

Oral and written communication skills.

Well-developed interpersonal skills to engage with colleagues and stakeholders.

Ability to work with flexibility within a team environment.

Ability to support the team as it responds to competing and often urgent requests.

A high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office software specifically with Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.

Ideal Degree/Discipline

An interest in and an understanding of public policy, public administration, project management, law, communication, and/or agile work practices.

Eligibility Requirements

Second last or final year of a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree

Australian citizens only

Identify as having disability

Candidates may be required to undergo a background check security clearance
