Text in red is unsubstantiated at this printing, or claimed but not supported by proof, or is a question I am asking for possible future answer, or is in some other way to be considered temporary. An advantage of electronic pub-lishing is that I can continue to improve and update the text while the mass of valid information is made available now. It is important therefore that ci-tations mention the version number, that red items not be cited, and that the color be preserved.

Text in blue is unproved too, but comes from the Irene Hargreaves book and hence deemed worthy of consideration if obviously supplied by some relative, somehow, and sometime. Strictly speaking, items in blue await formal proof too.

LINEAGE LIST NOTATION To facilitate stepping “backward” through the genealogy, I utilize one small addition to standard (actually “modified”) Register format. A leading subscript to a person in a lineage list is the person number for that indi-vidual in this work. For example (a fictitious one), Caleb6 Riggs (53Joseph5, Joseph4, Edward3, Edward2, Edward1) was son of person 53, Joseph5 Riggs (21Joseph4, Edward3, Edward2, Edward1), who in turn was son of person 21, Joseph4 Riggs, and so forth. This technique may be applied to any person in a lineage list. However, to reduce visual clutter, I will use it here for at most one person per lineage list, usually the first.

A superscript asterisk (*) indicates the first person in a lineage list who is not genetically related to the next older person in the list. For example (also fictitious), Nathan13* Knoll (191Martha12, Edward11, Theodore10, Ed-ward9, Elias8, Elias7, Preserve6, Zebulon5, ?Joseph4, Edward3, Edward2, Edward1) was an adopted son of Martha12 Riggs. Note also the question mark (?) in this lineage list, indicating that the father-son relationship of Joseph4 and Zebulon5 has not been proved.

N.B. The National Genealogical Society has now carefully codified modified Register format, mentioned above, so it is often called NGSQ format. Whatever the nomenclature, the above paragraphs describe de-partures from it.

METHODOLOGY AND STYLE NOTES Unsourced material. Some claims without accompanying sources are im-portant to preserve, as hints to future researchers or simply to indicate that I am aware of commonly claimed dates, names, or places, but am not cer-tain of them. I enter these in footnotes and not in the main text. I do not always explicitly flag these claims as unsourced, but they should be under-stood as such by their presence in the footnotes only. This type of infor-mation often comes from compiled, but unfortunately unsourced, geneal-ogies that have the appearance, to me at least, of being well researched and based on solid evidence. The footnote hint might inspire a future re-searcher to find the elusive evidence, whereas I had not done so by the time this book went to press.

Census litany. Rather than trying to be creative on each of hundreds of census readings, I have chosen to state them with a common “litany.” To make census litanies easy to spot, I usually introduce each one with the year. For example, a reading from the U.S. census for 1900 will begin “In 1900 . . . .”

Online sources. I have made much use of online sources, usually sec-ondary, such as the listing of gravestones in a particular cemetery. The problem with this practice is the supposed ephemeral nature of the web. Many online sources may simply disappear from the web over time, or change addresses at least. I have therefore made a copy of every webpage used in this work and archived it for future reference. Very notable ex-ceptions are the many databases available from major servers, such as <Ancestry.com>, which I assume, with some trepidation, will be perma-nently available by some means. The URL for a website is identified by enclosing < > brackets. When a URL needs to wrap at the end of a line for good visual appearance, I have inserted a hyphen in an appropriate location. This line-breaking hyphen should be omitted, of course, when the URL is used as an internet address.

Abbreviations. To fit this book into one bound volume, I have re-sorted to abbreviations. With one exception, I always abbreviate state

METHODOLOGY

©2014–2016 Alvy Ray Smith xiii 9/25/2016

names and month names. I do not abbreviate state names in the main text that stand alone. However, state names in footnotes are always ab-breviated, even in the titles of books.

I do not abbreviate anything in a quotation. An abbreviation in a quotation is present in the original.

I use succinct forms for the sources in footnotes. The bibliography should be consulted for full expansion of a source reference. See the ab-breviations section of the front matter for the full list of abbreviations used in the census references. In all cases, the census was read from <Ancestry.com>, and the roll numbers correspond to the microfilm se-ries used by that organization.

Verb tenses. Past tense is normally used, but a record is described in the present—e.g., Joe Riggs was born in 1836, but a death certificate for Joe Riggs states that he was born in 1836.

PREFACE

One of the earliest computer graphics systems in the world was DAC-1 (Design Augmented by Computers) at General Motors Research, published in 1964. The first author of the paper was Bar-rett Hargreaves. This book is devoted to discovering if he might have been related to either the Hen-ry Hargreaves family (mine) or the John Hargreaves family both of Lancashire. While creating this genealogy, I discovered a more extensive one in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City by Irene Hargreaves, then Barrett6 Hargreaves himself of DAC-1 fame sent me Oct. 2014 a copy of Irene’s book.[1] I have fleshed out my genealogy with hers in the places indicated (or vice versa).

N.B. Barnoldswick (known locally as Barlick) is 11 miles northeast of Padiham (ancestral home of the Henry Hargreaves family), Lancashire, separated more-or-less by Pendle Hill. The shortest modern road between them passes from Padiham through Higham (ancestral home of the John Hargreaves family) along Barrowford Road to Barrowford, then along Barnoldswick Road to Bar-noldswick. An alternate route passes through Burnley, then Colne, then to Barnoldswick. Bar-noldswick is named in the Domesday Book (as Bernulfsuuic) and was formerly part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is now in the West Craven area of the Borough of Pendle in Lancashire. It’s the highest town on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. So, although Barnoldswick was originally in Yorkshire, and is so listed in this book, it is now in Lancashire.

Note re DNA: A DNA test has been completed that compared a living descendant of John Har-greaves (probably he baptized 30 May 1708, Padiham, Lancashire) to a living descendant of Richard Hargreaves (who married 23 Oct. 1809, Padiham). So both patriarchs were of the Padiham/Burnley area. The DNA test yielded interesting results, indicating a possible genetic connection. Following are the Y-chromosome DNA signatures of Tony (from John) and Alan (from Richard), where a = 1, b = 2, . . . , z = 26, A = 27, B = 28, . . . , Z = 52, is used to shorten the list of 67 numbers. The loca-tions (markers) where the two signature differ are shown in blue:

Anthony Francis11 Hargreaves (David Terence10, Vivian9, Joseph8, Joshua Hartley7, ?6, John5, John4, John3, Robert2, John1):

nwojnokmknlEohjkkzntzknnokisunmqqHMlj:khophkjhjiluvokllmimAtkmllkllk.

Alan William6 Hargreaves (Colin Harvey James5, James Israel4, James3, Henry William2, Richard1):

nwojopkmknlEohjkkzntAknnokisunnpqHLlj:khophkjhjiluvokllmimAtkmmlkllk.

See my book John Hargreaves of Lancashire for the genealogy of Tony’s family. See my book Henry Har-greaves (1811–1899), Immigrant in 1840 to New South Wales, Australia, from Lancashire, England, and His Family for the genealogy of Alan’s family.

So Tony and Alan match at 60 of 67 markers. This is not enough to guarantee a MRCA = Most Recent Common Ancestor within historical time, but probabilities give a 96% chance of sharing an MRCA within 28 generations with this amount of (mis)matching. At 25 years per generation, that implies a MRCA about seven centuries ago. So sometime after about 1300 Tony and Alan shared a

1. Barrett6 Hargreaves of DAC-1 fame sent me Oct. 2014 a copy of Irene Hargreaves, Story of William and Grace Hargreaves, and I thank him for it. Its pp. 215–322 hold the Hargreaves genealogy. He also sent me a copy of his own genealogy of the families involved: Barrett Hargreaves, What’s in a Name?

common ancestor, with high probability. Another way to say this is that there probably was one Har-greaves patriarch several centuries ago from whom all the Hargreaveses in or from the Pa-diham/Burnley area descend. This is a theory only, as we have only two samples.

I now have a DNA sample from the Stephen Hargreaves family for comparison. Indeed, Barrett6 Hargreaves has contributed a sample. The blue markers are as before. The red markers show where Barrett’s signature differs uniquely from the other two.

Barrett6 Hargreaves (55Louis Herbert5, William4, William3, James2, Stephen1):

nwojookmknlDohjkkzntzknnokisunmqrHMlj:khophkjhjiluvoknlmimAtkmllkllk.

See this book for Barrett’s genealogy. Notice that Barrett’s signature differs by 5 from Tony’s and by 10 from Alan’s. 10 is a large distance, which discourages belief in a common ancestor for those two gentlemen.

Finally, I have discovered another genetic signature that matches Barrett’s fairly closely (64 of 67 markers).

Ken P.7 Hargreaves (William Garry6, William Edward5, [John] James4, Edward3, James2, Robert1):

nwojookmknlDohjkkzntzknookisunmqrHNlj:khophkjhjiluvoknlmimztkmllkllk.

See the appendix of this book for Ken’s genealogy. Notice that Barrett’s signature differs by only 3 from Ken’s, indicating an almost certain common ancestor—hence their presence in one book. I has-ten to add that no such ancestor has yet been found.

Ken’s signature differs by 8 from Tony’s and by 13 from Alan’s. These are large distances in ge-netics, again discouraging the notion of a common ancestor for these three lines despite the geo-graphic nearness.

STEPHEN HARGREAVES AND HIS FAMILY

©2014–2016 Alvy Ray Smith 1 9/25/2016

FIRST GENERATION

1. STEPHEN1 HARGREAVES[2] was probably he of Carleton-in-Craven, Yorkshire, in 1788–1796 for his marriage and the baptisms of several of his children, and then of Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, in 1797–1801 for the baptisms of several more of his children. The argument that the Stephen Har-greaves, and his wife Ann, of these two towns are the same persons depends on the neat timing of those baptisms and the nearness of the two towns. Careleton-in-Craven and Barnoldswick are about six miles apart as the crow flies, so probably about 10 miles apart by road routes (see Figure 2). After formulating this theory, I discovered that my correspondent on this family, Barrett6 Hargreaves, had already discovered it and written about it in his book on the family.[3]

Only two pieces of evidence call this theory into question, and they are soft. One is that the 1841 census has son James born about 1791 in Yorkshire. The other is that the 1851 census has him born about 1790 in Barnoldswick. The English censuses are often fairly accurate, so I don’t simply dismiss their ages (as I do U.S. census ages). But the census records for Stephen, putative brother of our James, are inaccurate. The 1841 census has him born about 1801, where his bap-tism was in 1793! And the 1851 has him born about 1795 (in “Carlton,” Yorkshire, however). So I believe that the two census anomalies for James are not sufficiently strong to discount the theory stated above. I will assume its validity in this book, after stating these caveats.

Additional support for the theory of the move from Carleton-in-Craven to Barnoldswick be-tween the baptisms of 1796 and 1797 is this: The Leeds-Liverpool Canal was completed to Bar-noldswick in 1796, suddenly thrusting that town into major importance in the area. (I thank my correspondent Barrett6 Hargreaves for pointing out this coincidence.)[4] Stephen Hargreaves was a waller, meaning that he built walls. It is conceivable that he had a part in building the walls of the canal, but I have no proof that he did, nor that wallers were so employed. It is interesting that his abode in Barnoldswick was given as Long Ing.[5] A surviving reminder of that name is Long Ing Road that passes directly over the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.

Stephen married 21 Dec. 1788, St. Mary, Carleton-in-Craven,[6] ANN THORNTON. See son John’s baptism record to see that her name in Barnoldswick was Ann.

I inspected the Barnoldswick parish record (for the St. Mary-le-Gill church, book 1: 1722–1812), baptisms and burials (and a few marriages), and found these meager Hargreaves listings, es-pecially meager considering how common the surname was in the environs then [notice the long gaps]:[7]

2. Hargreaves, Story of William and Grace Hargreaves, 223, has Stephen born about 1768, Barnoldswick but this appear to have been guessed, using a marriage age of about 22 or 23. [Items in blue are from this book and have not been vetted by me.] 3. Hargreaves, What’s in a Name?, 17–19. 4. Hargreaves, What’s in a Name?, 21–23. 5. Ing is an old word of Norse origin meaning meadow, especially water meadow near a river. The next found was John’s baptism (see Children) in 1797, the first mention of Stephen Har-greaves (and Ann). Then the next two found were the baptism and burial of Peter (see Children). Then this:

Burial 1801: “February 27th James Hargreaves of Barnoldswick Cotton Weaver.”

The next found was Martha’s baptism (see Children) in 1801. Then a long gap before these:

Baptism 1809: “26 [child name and seniority] Betty 1 [father and abode] William Hargreaves of Barnoldswick [mother] Jane Sutcliffe [born] Apl 23rd [baptized] July 16.”

Baptism 1811: “21 [child name and seniority] Thomas 2 [father and abode] William Hargreaves Barnoldswick Lane [mother] Jane Sutcliffe [born] Octr 31st 1810 [baptized] July 29th.”

Baptism 1811: “30 [child name and seniority] Thomas 1 [father and abode] Anthony Hargreaves New Home [mother] Susannah Dewherst [born] Augt 5th [baptized] Septr 1st 1811.”

There were no further Hargreaveses found in the book (through 1812). This further supports the theory that Stephen Hargreaves came from the nearby parish of Carleton-in-Craven.

For future reference: I inspected the Carleton-in-Craven parish record (for St. Mary church) and found these Hargreaves listings, hinting at possible relatives of Stephen Hargreaves of that town:[8]

THIRD GENERATION

10. MARY3 HARGREAVES (2James2, Stephen1) was baptized 2 Nov. 1817, Barnoldswick, York-shire.[61] She married 14 Jan. 1839, Barnoldswick,[62] CHRISTOPHER EDMONDSON, born about 1819, Barnoldswick, son of John Edmondson.

In 1851 Christopher Edmondson, 32, a green grocer born in Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, Eng-land, resided in Habergham Eaves, Lancashire, with his wife, Mary, 33, born in Barnoldswick, daughter, Ann, 13, a power loom weaver, sons, William, 10, and James, 7, daughter, Margaret, 5, all born in Barnoldswick, and son, John, 9 months, born in Habergham Eaves.[63]

In 1861 “Christr” Edmondson, 43, a huckster born in Barnoldswick, resided in Burnley, Habergham Eaves, Lancashire, with his wife, Mary, 43, born in Barnoldswick, sons, William, 20, and James, 17, both button weavers born in Barnoldswick, son, John, 9, daughter, Margaret, 8, son, Thomas, 5, daughter, Alice, 3, and son, Joseph, 3, all born in Burnley, Lancashire. Also in the household is John Tomlinson, 25, born in Burnley, his wife, Hannah, 22, born in Barnoldswick, and their daughter, Mary Hannah, 2, birthplace not given.[64] Hannah was probably Ann of the 1851 census, verified as such by the next census.

In 1871 “Chistr” Edmondson, 53, a green grocer born in Barnoldswick, resided in Habergham Eaves, Burnley, Lancashire, with his wife, Mary, 53, born in Barnoldswick, daughter, Margaret, 18, a cotton weaver, son, Thomas, 15, a liquor merchant’s boy, daughter, Alice, 13, and son, Joseph, 13, both cotton weavers, all born in Burnley, Lancashire, and granddaughter, Mary Ann Tomlin-son, 11, born in Burnley.[65]

In 1881 Christopher Edmondson, 64, a green grocer born in Barnoldswick, resided in Habergham Eaves, Burnley, Lancashire, with his wife, Mary, 64, born in Barnoldswick, son, Thomas, 25, an unmarried green grocer, both born in Burnley, and boarders, Mary A. Tomlinson, 21, a dressmaker, Elizabeth E. Tomlinson, 19, a cotton weaver, both born in Burnley, and Maria Tomlinson, 13, a packer born in Accrington, Lancashire.[66]

26 i ANN/HANNAH4 EDMONDSON, born about 1838, Barnoldswick, married JOHN TOMLINSON, born about 1836, Burnley, and had at least one child: (1) Mary Ann/Hannah5 Tomlinson, born about 1859, Burnley. Ann’s birth year suggests that she was conceived out of wedlock.

27 ii WILLIAM4 EDMONDSON, born about 1841, Barnoldswick. 28 iii JAMES4 EDMONDSON, born about 1844, Barnoldswick. 29 iv MARGARET4 EDMONDSON, born about 1846, Barnoldswick. ANN3 HARGREAVES (2James2, Stephen1) was baptized 3 Sept. 1820, Barnoldswick.[67] She per-haps had a daughter out of wedlock (see 1841 census), Ann4 Hargreaves, born about 1839, York-shire. She is easily confused with Ann Hargreaves, born about 1827 or 1828, Barnoldswick. See rec-ords below.

An Ann Hargreaves married 15 Oct. 1848, Barnoldswick,[68] William Eccleston, who was born about 1820, Barnoldswick, son of John Eccleston. But this Ann’s father was listed as James [F?]oldsworth, and her age as 21 at marriage, making her birth about 1827, in Barnoldswick. So this marriage doesn’t fit.

In 1871 William Eccleston, 50, a carter born in Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, resided in Bar-noldswick with his wife, Ann, 43 [sic], born Barnoldswick, daughters Martha, 18, and Mahetabel, 13, cotton weavers, son John, 10, cotton weaver, and daughter, Rachel, 8, all four born in Bar-noldswick. William “Hargraves” was listed adjacently.[69] 12. WILLIAM3 HARGREAVES (2James2, Stephen1) was born 14 June 1824, Barnoldswick, York-shire, and was baptized 17 Aug. 1824, Wesley Chapel, Colne, Lancashire.[70] He died 20 June 1899, with probate 24 Nov. 1899, Wakefield.[71] He married 25 Dec. 1846, Barnoldswick, Lancashire,[72] 67. Nothing quite fits for her. There was also an Ann (Feld-south) Hargreaves who married William Eccleston, 15 Oct. 1848, but this is not our Ann Hargreaves (see next note). 68. APPENDIX: A RELATED HARGREAVES FAMILY

The Hargreaves family here is from the same area in Yorkshire (now Lancashire) that the Stephen Hargreaves family is from. And there is a DNA match between descendants of both (matching on 64 of 67 markers). Hence the goal here is to find, if possible, a genealogical link between the two fami-lies.

The most important two towns are Barnoldswick for the Stephen Hargreaves family and Skip-ton for the Robert Hargreaves family below. They are about six miles apart in what was formerly Yorkshire West Riding. Skipton is about 18 miles from Burnley, a center for the Henry Hargreaves family, and about 25 miles from Accrington, center of the John Hargreaves family. But these small distances mattered a lot in the early days of these four families.

Although many of the early records of the following family use the form Hargraves for the sur-name, I have opted to always spell it Hargreaves, the modern form of the name that this family now uses. 1. ROBERT1 HARGREAVES married JANE —. Perhaps the Robert “Hargraves” who was baptized 9 Aug. 1747, Long Preston, Yorkshire,[196] son of Robert and Elizabeth (—) “Hargraves,” and married 1 Sept.1777, Long Preston, Yorkshire,[197] Jane Hartley. The parents were probably Robert “Har-graves” who married 1737, Long Preston,[198] Elizabeth Whalley.

N.B. Long Preston, Skipton, and Barnoldswick, all in Yorkshire West Riding, form an equilat-eral triangle about 6 miles on a side.

Children:

Mary 1778, Elizabeth 1780, John 1783, Edward 1784 2 i MARTHA2 HARGREAVES, born 17 June 1788, baptized 20 July 1788, Skipton, Yorkshire.[199] 3 ii ANN2 HARGREAVES, born 14 June 1790, baptized 24 Oct. 1809, Skipton, Yorkshire.[200] 4 iii WILLIAM2 HARGREAVES, born 16 June 1793, baptized 17 May 1807, Skipton, Yorkshire,[201]

It is possible that Martha was born out of wedlock. There is a Martha Hartley, 2, born Burnley, in the household of her uncle Jonathan Hartley in the 1861 census, which also includes two unmarried sisters, Ann, 25, born Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, and Grace, 17, born Trawden, Lancashire. There was a baptism 15 Aug. 1858, Holy Trinity, Habertham Eaves, of Martha Hartley, daughter of Ann Hartley, born 22 July 1858, with this [crossed out] note: “Father’s name entered as Benjamin Hartley and mother’s name entered as Clegg, both crossed out and change initialled J. B.,” where James Butler was the minister who performed the baptism. But there was also a marriage 14 Jan. 1857, Holy Trinity, Habertham Eaves, of William Hartley, 21, to Ann Cherry, 18, which fits perfectly with fa-ther William and mother Ann. But William and Ann in the 1871 census have no children. I haven’t yet been able to reconcile all this.

52,[276] and was buried 31 Jan. 1911, Burnley Cem.[277] He married (2) ELIZA (PROCTOR) HORN-ER, who was baptized 4 Nov. 1861, St.Paul, Burnley,[278] daughter of Peter and Mary Ann (—) Proc-tor, and died 11 Feb. 1934, Burnley,[279] and was buried 15 Feb. 1934, Burnley Cem. (see obituary below).[280]

Eliza married, first, 13 July 1882, St. Matthew the Apostle, Habergham Eaves, Lancashire,[281] Harry Horner, son of David Horner. Witnesses for their marriage were James and Mary Proctor, who had just married: James Proctor, son of Peter Proctor, married 15 Apr. 1882, St. Matthew the Apos-tle, Habergham Eaves, Lancashire,[282] Mary Dennis, daughter of Moses Dennis. Witnesses at their marriage were Harry Horner and Eliza Proctor.

In 1891 James Hargreaves, 31, a cotton cloth looker born in Skipton, Yorkshire, resided in Burnley, Lancashire, with his wife, Martha, 31, born in Burnley, and with his daughter, Sylvia A., 9, son, “Wm” E., 7, and daughter, Sarah E., 1, all three born in Burnley.[283]

In 1911 James Hargreaves, 52, widower, a grocer and baker born in Skipton, Yorkshire, resided in Burnley, Lancashire, with his daughter, Sarah Ellen, 21, a cotton winder born in Burnley, and three boarders, including Eliza Horner, 50, married and having had no children, born in Burnley, and Peter Proctor, 73, a widower born in Burnley.[285] Eliza was Peter’s daughter.

In 1917 James’s son, William Edward, enlisted in the Canadian armed forces. The enlistment paper mentions that his father, James, was in Blackpool then.[286] This is consistent with the follow-ing obituary for Eliza, James’s second wife: 276. A Loss to St. Matthew’s.—The death [took?] place, last Sunday, at her home, 73, Rosehill-road, of a well-known Burnley lady, Mrs. Eliza Hargreaves. She was the wife of Mr. James Hargreaves, and had been married twice. Previous to going to reside in Blackpool, about 24 years ago [sic, about 1910], she was widely known in connection with a confectionary business which the family held in St. Matthew-street, but she had to leave for the seaside resort on account of ill-health. Seven years ago [about 1927] she re-turned with her family, and resumed her connection with St. Matthew’s church, where she was a much respected member of the congregation. She was an old scholar of Back-lane Sunday School. One of Mrs. Hargreaves’ chief delights was painting, and she produced many beautiful examples of artistic craftmanship. She was 74 years of age, and leaves a husband, two daughters and a son, the latter being in Canada. The interment will take place to-morrow in the Burnley Cemetery.[287]

From an obituary for William, published 24 Mar. 1947, Kenton, Manitoba, Canada:

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Nurse Burna, of Neepawa hospital; three sons, Garry, Jack and Norris, and two sisters in England.[297]

The family story is that William Edward came to Canada at age 19, so in about 1903.[298] William Edward Hargreaves applied for a homestead patent in Saskatchewan stating that he

first entered a claim 1 May 1907, built a house on it Dec. 1907, and began living in it 27 Oct. 1907. He resided there 27 Oct. 1907 to 3 May 1909 and 6 Nov. 1909 to 5 Aug. 1910, and other-wise resided in Silverton, Manitoba.[299]

The World War I record of William Edward Hargreaves as a soldier for Canada, dated 15 Sept. 1917, gives his birth as 21 Jan. 1887, Burnley, son of James Hargreaves, which appears to be in er-ror by 3 years. He resided at the time of enlistment at Silverton, Manitoba, Canada. The location of his father, James, at the time, was Blackpool, Lancashire.[302]

Hargreaves: It is with great sadness, but with fond memories, the family announces the passing of Garry Hargreaves. After a short illness, he passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Hillcrest Place in Brandon, Manitoba at the age of 87. Garry was born August 24, 1924 in Silverton, Manitoba. His father was a grain buyer and moved from Silverton to Kenton. Garry completed his early education during the Second World War. Garry enlisted in the Canadian Air Force and commenced air crew training under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He logged hours training as a pilot, later transferring to air gunning as air crew needs changed. Early in 1945 he was posted to England and was there when armistice occurred. He was eventually discharged and studied for a year at United College in Winnipeg. In 1945, Rural Electrification began in Manitoba. Garry joined the Manitoba Power Commission (MPC), starting as a groundman and then completed training as a Journeyman Lineman. During those years, Garry met the love of his life, Mary Davidson, a young nurse who had worked with his sister Berna. They married in May, 1951. Garry continued to advance his career with MPC which became Manitoba Hydro (Hydro) in 1961. Garry transferred to postings in construction and district operations that included stops in Dauphin, Neepawa and Boissevain. . . . Garry was appointed the Di-rector of the Western Region in Brandon.
