On behalf of everyone in the Parks Service I would like to welcome you to this latest edition of our events and activities guide. This guide contains information on activities to be enjoyed in our parks, open spaces and our 12 woodlands. There is something for everyone, access is good and many of our facilities and activities are free for you to enjoy.

In the Parks Service, we have a dedicated team of staff who work extremely hard to ensure your visit is an enjoyable one, whether you choose Coombe Country Park – the only country park in the city, War Memorial Park – the Premier Park for the city, one of the Area Parks – Allesley, Longford, Holbrooks and Caludon Castle, or the many others which are smaller in size but local to where you live.

The city is very proud to have been successful in achieving three national Green Flag Awards this year, for Coombe, Allesley and Longford Parks. This accolade is the result of partnership working between the City Council, ward councillors and residents, and recognises high standards and presentation of the park. I would like to thank all involved for their help and support.

I hope you find this guide useful and you and your families are able to enjoy our many facilities and events during the coming months.

Ces Edwards Head of Parks and Open Spaces Coventry City Council

parkrun is a free, weekly timed 5km run that takes place at a number of locations around the UK. We caught up with Volunteer Race Director Jason Douglas to find out what motivated him to set up one in the War Memorial Park, the first in the Midlands.

Name: Jason DouglasAge: 33Interests: Running, playing sport and keeping fit.

Why did you want to set up parkrun in Coventry?I love running. There’s nothing easier than putting on a pair of trainers and going out for a run, it’s relaxing and fun. So when I heard about parkrun, I wanted to see what it was about. I went along to a few parkruns and was really impressed with the setup. You register on the website once and then turn up at any event for a 9.00am start. You run your own race, then the results are collated, you can either go home or at most events join other runners for a coffee afterwards. Your result is then emailed to you on the same day.

There’s a great community spirit at parkrun; run entirely by volunteers. The events are open to all, from beginners to Olympians! It’s an inspiring concept and simple for runners old and new. I thought this would be brilliant to have in Coventry, for the large number of runners already out there and to help encourage others to try running.

How did you feel before the first parkrun?I felt pretty good about the whole thing. All the volunteer roles had been filled and 100 runners had registered their interest for the Coventry parkrun so I knew that at least some of them would show up on the day. The only thing I thought I would be nervous about was giving the pre-race talk, but in the end there just wasn’t time to worry about it.

8

Page 9: Step Out Guide October 2010 - March 2011

8 9

How many volunteers are involved in parkrun? What do you do to support them and how do you keep them motivated? Our volunteers are fantastic! Without volunteers Coventry parkun couldn’t happen. So far, we’ve had over 70 different people volunteering. Each parkrun requires about an hour of each volunteer’s time. We try to keep things simple and stress free and there’s a range of different roles that people can try, from welcoming runners and answering queries, marshals, to race director.

What has been the most rewarding part of setting up Coventry parkrun?Watching people progress from not being sure they’ll get round a 5km course to bettering their time each week.

What would you say to someone thinking about doing the Coventry parkrun?parkrun is open to everyone. I think we’re a very friendly and encouraging group and welcome all abilities from walkers to the very, very quick. You don’t need to race against anyone else, just challenge yourself to finish your first 5km or beat your best time. Come down and see for yourself or ask anyone who has done one. Oh, it’s fun, it’s free and a great way to start a Saturday! For more information or to register, please visit www.parkrun.org.uk/coventry If you are interested in volunteering please [email protected]

1 to 14 November 2010

14 November 1940 is recognised as one of the most significant dates in the city’s history, as during that evening the city suffered one of the largest air raids of the Second World War. The raid, by over 500 German bombers, aimed to destroy Coventry’s industrial strength, a key contributor to the country’s war effort. It resulted in the loss of 600 lives, the destruction of thousands of homes and changed the face of the historic city forever. When it took place, it was the most concentrated air raid of the Second World War, and the term ‘Coventrated’ was used by the Germans to describe similar levels of destruction on other towns. Further air raids took place in 1941. Coventry has worked hard to build itself as a city of peace and reconciliation. It has become the welcoming home for all nationalities and religions and a place of refuge for many asylum seekers and stateless people. The city has a great reputation as a place where people can live and work together in harmony, and celebrates the diversity and cultural contribution that our new communities bring to Coventry. During the month of November, we celebrate our diversity with a Peace Festival, bringing together community, cultural and faith groups from across the city as a reminder that Coventry is a place of peace and reconciliation and for many, a city of sanctuary. This year there will also be special events to remember the Coventry civilians who died during the Blitz. Please support the events across the city for Coventry Peace Festival and the 70th anniversary of the Blitz. www.coventry.gov.uk/peacewww.coventry.gov.uk/blitz

Walks case study

34

Coventry Healthy Walks set up and help to lead a network of walks in the community. The project aims to encourage people to join weekly led walks and also take up more independent walking as part of their daily lifestyle. These are all led by volunteers who have attended a one day accredited volunteer walk leader workshop. We spoke to one of our volunteer walk leaders. Name: Ann Jackson, War Memorial Park Walk on Sundays

How long have you been a walk leader? For three months.

Why did you become a walk leader?I thought it would do me good and I like to mix with people and get to know new people. I am friendly and I thought I could make people want to come back. It is doing me a power of good! It’s an excellent way of getting people out.

What do you enjoy about being a walk leader?Because once you say you’re going to do something, you commit to it, otherwise you’re letting people down. I get to see my daughter every week and spend some quality time with her, as she works full time and is very busy. I also really enjoy walking on flat ground, due to health conditions, and I really like walking round the War Memorial Park. I’ve definitely improved my fitness and would like to go on more of them when I can fit it in!

Have you recommended the walk to anybody?Yes, I have told several people and we are now getting more people every week. It started off quite slow but it’s building up well!

What would you change about the walks? At the moment, nothing! It’s a bit short for the fast walkers, but they can always go round again. For further information on walks and becoming a volunteer walk leader please contact the Health & Physical Activity team on 024 7683 3148 or email [email protected] www.coventry.gov.uk/healthywalks
