BERWICK - APRIL 2014
Tough Mudder 2014 - the TOUGHEST!!!
On the 22nd of March, the Berwick Barbarians conquered the Tough Mudder
course yet again! It was a cold windy day, with a team of twenty-one strong we
battled together relentlessly through the 20km plus course. Right from the first
obstacle the Arctic Enema (Ice bath!), we knew we were in for a gruelling day...
and it proved to be arguably the hardest Tough Mudder we had come across to date.
Continue reading for a brief summary of that eventful day.
From about 2km in we were hit with the first dilemma... Lisa Boulton (AKA
the Boult) was struck with intense knee pain she had developed from a week prior
and was silently praying it would go away. It was clear to the Boult and the rest of
the Barbarians that for her to complete the course with this misfortune would be
virtually impossible. Yet... true to her style, she pushed through the pain delaying
what would be the inevitable. The question now was how much of the course
would she complete??
It was the infamous Walk the Plank (approx 5 meter jump into water), that
once again tested many to their conscious limit... LITERALLY!!! Without going into
much detail, lets just say that the officials had to temporarily close the obstacle due
to the drama that unfolded.

STEP INTO LIFE LOCAL NEWS
-
It was shortly after this that the Boults knee pain intensified greatly. In a
desperate measure the Barbarians tried to carry her through. Selflessly this is not
what she wanted, so she decided to call it quits. She had miraculously and
stubbornly managed to push through until the 10km mark... HALF WAY!!! It
happened just before the Electric Eel, where First Aid also recommended her not to
continue. Proud of her efforts to make it this far and once in safe hands, the
Barbarians were forced to continue. It was also at the Electric Eel where Barbarian
Neb, had a minor setback breaking his corrective lens glasses and was to continue on
with reduced vision. Besides this drama, there was one outstanding success at the
Electric Eel worth mentioning; Androvski Hoseovskis bright pink ANTI-ZAP
swimmers cap managed to protect his exposed head quite well!! It has now been
patented.
The new and much anticipated obstacle Leap of Faith proved to be
extremely difficult with only Marko, Jim, Jeff and Sarah managing to conquer it.
Other new obstacles Balls to the wall and Fingertips proved to be quite
challenging also, which we cherished!! The Barbarian Chicks were all over the
Mud Mile yet again helping the boys and so too was the mud all over them (see
pic of JoJo & Erin below)!!!
However it was near the end where our Barbarians mateship was on full
display... at the much anticipated obstacle Everest (a 1/4 pipe skate ramp). Unlike
in the past, a new tactic was applied to get every Barbarian over this obstacle. The
Barbarians many in number, formed a human ladder from bottom to top!! Slowly
and surely each Barbarian climbed their way up the human ladder and over Everest.
The last three Barbarians then running up and jump grabbing the hand of their
fellow Barbarian awaiting up top. This tactic yielded 100% success rate, which was
absolutely amazing!!!
The also infamous Electrocution finish line yet again delivered
entertainment for onlookers. In the panic rush to get through, our Barbarian Helen
Alter, was zapped right at the end dropping to the muddy ground with her head
unfortunately getting in the way of another Barbarians (Santo Scardamaglia) knee...
and to put it lightly Helen had a free mud facial!!! Slightly shocked by the ordeal,
she was OK.
On completion, the complementary beer was said to be the best on the planet
and the steaks consumed at the charcoal BBQ later that night were just as good!!!
Step into Life Berwick would just like to applaud the Berwick Barbarians for their
achievements that day and thank everyone involved from the vital spectator support
crew (Shareef, Jasmine, Raya, Chaingy, John, Fi and Barry) to the people who
-
contributed with the cleaning, cooking and drinking at the house for that entire
weekend.
For those of you reading this and that feel youve got what it takes to
complete Tough Mudder, registration for the 21st of March 2015 under the team
BERWICK BARBARIANS, it is now available. However to sign-up as a Berwick
Barbarian you must be running a minimum Fitness Category 5 for Cardiomax
sessions and please speak to Marko or Neb before doing so. Also importantly, the
sooner you sign-up the cheaper it is!!!
BARBARIANS... 1... 2... 3... Oooo Ahhhhh!!!

A new BILL GlEESON
Our very own Bill Gleeson has lost a GRAND TOTAL of 20KG since starting
at Step into Life Berwick!!! Surviving his very first session, a gruelling Cardiomax,
we knew he would go on to achieve great results due to his great attitude, work
ethic and motivation. From then on we have watched him grow in confidence,
speed and strength, but shrink in size the best possible way. His success is such an
inspiration that we had to celebrate it in a monumental way... with the Vest of
Victory.
On the 17th of March for one session we sent Bill back into his daunting past.
His task was to complete a session wearing the Vest of Victory, weighing in at
20kg. This challenge took head-on and smashed it out for the entire session!
It reminded me of my very first session, a Cardiomax Telford Road Run
where I felt like I was going to die." Remembering that moment seamed to motivate
him even more during this session, where he also stated "the Vest of Victory made
me push even harder tonight".
THEN... NOW...
-
Step into Life Berwick would like to congratulate him on this weight loss
success, also thanking Bill for taking on and successfully completing the 'Vest of
Victory' challenge in good sport.
So proud and happy for you, well done mate!!!
