The Queens Award is a noble award , which boys should take a pride

in. You are required to work hard over a minimum of 1 year,

preferably 2, and complete a minimum of at least 30 hours activity

in each service aspect: Company/Church Responsible Role and

Voluntary Service or Support to Others. You are also required to

attend a skills based course as well as a Completion Residential. The

Completion Residential is the final stage of the award and is

required to be a residential course so that staff can see your full

potential, it is an enjoyable weekend for both yourself and staff if

the correct effort is put in. Please use this guide to complete the

record book thoroughly and make sure everything is signed off

where needed.

Take pride in yourself when doing your award, it is a great

achievement , which will hold you in good stead for life.

This step-by-step guide has been compiled by a previous Queen’s

Badge Candidate and is designed to help you understand exactly

what is required to be included in each page of your record book.

Page 13 is all about your candidates meeting which will be held

between yourself, your Mentor and your Battalion Advisor. You are

required to arrange a time and place for this meeting and add this

information to page 14 of your record book.

meeting the signatures of your Mentor

and Battalion Advisor are required.

On page 16 you have to state the date of the skills based training

you wish to attend (this doesn’t have to be the date you attend this

is one you hope to attend). It also requires a small paragraph

saying what you would like to achieve from the skills course. To

find out about dates please refer to the The Boys’ Brigade Scotland

website or ask you Battalion Advisor.

or Church. On page 18 you have to state where you will be carrying

out your service (this should be discussed with your mentor). If it is

within the Brigade please state which section you will be working

with, if it is within a Church please give full name of Church plus

town name where the Church is situated. Also on this page you are

asked for a brief description regarding what you hope to achieve

within your Voluntary Service.

Page 21 is practically the same as page 18 except this time it is not

about your Voluntary Service within the Brigade but for your 30

hours Voluntary Service within the Community. Again before

making a decision consult your mentor on what you plan to do. As

on page 18 please state the name of where you plan to volunteer

and also add a small description regarding what you plan to

achieve.

As part of your Queen’s Badge award you are required to

carry two of the following: skill, physical or expedition

(please note you only need to do two of these and it is up to you

and your mentor what two you carry out, if you wish to carry out all

3 that is fine but no extra merit will be given for this).

If doing a skill & physical 1 must be for at least 6 months the other

for 3 months. Where one is chosen together with expedition then

participation should be for a minimum of 6 months.

Page 24 focuses on the skill element of the course if you plan to

carry out the skill section you must say what skill you will be

carrying out and what you hope to achieve from this skill. Some

examples of skills are given on page 23.

Pages 25-26 focuses on the physical aspect of the award. On page

26 you are required to say what the physical activity is that you

wish to carry out and also what you hope to gain from the activity.

Some examples of physical activities that can be carried out are

given on page 25.

Pages 27-28 focuses on the expedition/exploration part of the

award. An expedition doesn’t simply have to be a hike; an

expedition can also include things like cycling, canoeing and horse

riding. There are some rules for carrying out an expedition and

these can be found on page 27 of your Record Book.

On page 27 you must provide the date, location and also who you

intend doing your practice expedition with. On page 28 you are

required to provide the same information but for your qualifying

expedition also include a brief summary of what you hope to

achieve.

Page 29 in your Record Book is based on your Completion

Residential which you will take part in at the end of your award.

Please read the regulations for the course situated on page 29 on

this page you must also give the date you intend to carry out your

Completion Residential as well as the venue.

must be strictly adhered to, so make sure you are

complying with the regulations.

Page 30 is a signing off page for all your action plans (everything

you have stated that you intend to do) there are 3 signatures

required:

•yours,

•your Queen’s Badge Advisor,

•your company Mentor.

Pages 34 and 35 are all about the Skills Based Training that you said

you would attend on page 16.

On this page the assessor of the course will fill in the first part on

most occasions and will give a brief report on how you have

performed during the course.

You are also required to give a description regarding what you did

during the course and what you think you have achieved by doing

the course.

Please note that you must have completed a

Skills -Based Training Course at least 6 months

prior to attending your Completion Residential.

your Voluntary Service within the Brigade or Church.

This is your chance to tell us exactly what you did and what you

gained from the experience.

These pages require your assessor (the person who is making sure

you do everything correctly within your volunteering) to write a

very brief report about you and how they feel you performed and

also to sign off this section for you.

Pages 38-39 is your log of hours, this is a vital part of your Record

Book.

This is where you have to write a description of everything you

carried out on each day you volunteered as well as including how

many hours you did, this all has to be signed off by your supervisor.

service within the brigade or church and all the hours

must be fully accounted for.

Again you must state where you are carrying out your service and

your assessor must write a brief report about how well they think

you have done. These pages must also be signed .

carried out and if you enjoyed it. Please remember that 30 hours are

required to be carried out at this stage as well.

Pages 42-43 are very similar to pages 38-39 except this time you are

recording the hours you have achieved for your service outwith the

Brigade or Church.

Again you must give a description of what duties you carried out on

particular days of your service as well as including all the dates that

you volunteered, also how many hours you completed per day. Your

supervisor’s signature is required for each occasion.

Failure to accumulate these hours will result in you not achieving

your award.

Pages 44-45 are pertaining to the Developing Interest section in

your skills area.

On this page you must state your chosen skill, the date you started

and completed and once again your assessor must sign off this page

as well as give a short report on how you progressed in developing

your skill..

You once again must give brief comments on how you think you got

on during your development and if you enjoyed learning a new skill

and also what you did throughout in developing that skill.

Pages 46-47 is where you are recording the hours you have

achieved for your Developing Interest section.

Again you must give a short description of what you carried out on

particular days of your Developing Interest as well as including all

your dates and how many hours you carried out. Your supervisor’s

signature is required for each occasion.

Remember if doing a Skill and Physical then you must do a

minimum of 6 months on one activity and 3 months on the other.

If however one activity is chosen together with

Expedition/Exploration the activity must be for a least 6 months.

As with pages 44 and 45 pages 48-49 are again about your

developing interests but this time the physical aspect.

Again you must state the physical activity and as with everything in

the book your assessor must sign off the page as well

as write a brief report about your progress

And once again you must give a brief description on

what you did during the time period and your views

on the physical activity.

Pages 52-53 are all about your expedition if you chose to do one as

part of your Record Book.

Again you must name your expedition and give its location and the

dates you started and completed.

Your assessor has to again sign off this page and also give a brief

report on how you did.

You must also give a description of your expedition and if you

enjoyed it. At this point you must also include a copy of your

presentation on your expedition.

Your Company Captain has to recommend you for acceptance onto

a place in the Completion Residential and also give a brief

description on yourself and how you get on within the company

and that in their opinion you are a suitable candidate for the

Queen’s Badge.

This page will be filled out by your group/task leader at the

Completion Residential, he or she will provide a short summary on

Page 48 is your signing off page. Before you attend your Completion

Residential your Battalion Advisor must sign off that he or she has

checked your Record Book and is satisfied that it is fit to be handed

over at the Completion Residential. At the bottom of this page the

authorisation of your book will be signed by the Area Organiser and

this will mean your book has been passed. Please note that before

your book is signed off everything must be completed and will be

checked by a member of staff at the Completion Residential.

Please note that there is a Health and Safety checklist on pages 62-

66 which has to be completed by your Company Captain.

Also on page 60 there is an area for you to put in all the details of

your presentation

Congratulations at this point your Record Book is complete and you

are now a Queen’s Man.
