TIPS ON HOW TO BECOME

A GOOD SPEAKER

Page 2: Step by Step Tips on How to Become a Good Speaker (Ppt)

Public speaking is not a God's gift that some people are born with, it is an art one develops gradually and gets better and better over time. It is all about one's

passion and an extreme determination to become a good pubic speaker. Preparedness, concentration

and experience are the three buzz words of Public Speaking. Almost all famous public and motivational speakers were nervous when they hit stage first time in their life, but

they acquired the art of good public speaking gradually

TIP # 1

Observe people Begin by improving your listening and observational skills.

Observe people whom you consider as good speakers at work and on television. Regardless of your religion, take some time

to watch the evangelists on television. They have elevated public speaking to an art. Listen to where they pause their

words in a sentence. For example, notice that good speakers will pause after an important concept or just before reaching a conclusion to give the listener time to absorb the information

as much as to create anticipation.

TIP # 3

Audition in front of your friends

If this is your first or second speech, it is a good idea to call a friend who is quite honest (neither a nagging nor a yes-yes

friend). Take only those suggestions which you are comfortable with. Remain calm, appear relaxed, do not

mumble. Speak loudly, confidently and clearly.

TIP # 4

Cultivate Knowledge On The

Subject For a good speaker, content is extremely important to stand out as someone who is intently heard by his/her audience. If

you already know the subject you have to speak on, try to cultivate an insight into the subject and expand your

knowledge base. People appreciate knowledgeable speakers and delivering substantial and interesting information will hold

you in high esteem with your listeners. A good speaker, just like a good professor, will always go prepared for the speech.

TIP # 5

Prepare your content very well

This is truly the number on rule. You should be absolutely confident about what you are about to speak. Read repeatedly

and understand thoroughly on whatever you are about to speak. Believe in your speech first before you want others to

follow it. If the content of your speech is your strength most of your nervousness about facing the big crowd will

automatically dive down.

TIP # 6

Add Humor To Your Content

No matter how great an orator you are, a drab content will soon wither away the interest of the audience. You need to make the session interesting by adding a dash of humor in your content, to keep the audience amused. Holding the

interest of the audience for long is a great art that can be perfected over time. An excellent content laced with humor and an equally witty disposition to carry it off will work as

icing on the cake, for a good speaker.

TIP # 7

Length of a Speech

An hour is long enough for a good public speech. The secret of success is the art of omission. A painter when he paint all the palm leaves. He paints just enough to create the impression of a full grown tree. You must leave your audience with a feeling that you should have spoken effectively before public audience you must always keep your hand on the pulse of the audience. Long before the audience gets tired or restless, you must stop.

TIP # 9

Sound Sincere With What You Say

Sincerity in your words tops the order among the attributes of a good speaker. People will pay heed to what you are saying, if

they feel you are for real. Excellent speakers are those who are not just good orators, but also come across as genuine. The key to appear sincere is to speak in a conversationalist tone, as if you are talking to your audience. Speak in a way you talk to people in your day- to-day life, to strike a chord

with your audience.

TIP # 10

Find The Right Volume

You don’t have to shout, but be loud enough. You never have to give girls the chance of asking “what”, “I don’t understand”, etc. Also, speaking loud and not being shy about it will convey

value, showing you can withstand social pressure.

TIP # 11

Learn To Modulate Your Voice

Every word that one says carries a different emotion and these emotions need to be transmitted to the audience in an

expressive way. One of the greatest qualities a good speaker should posses is the ability to modulate his/her voice to for

effect. Hitting the nail right on the head is all about being able to convey your thoughts and make the audience feel what you are saying. Voice modulation may call for some practice, but it

can be easily mastered over time.

TIP # 12

Maintain Eye Contact With The

Audience The golden rule to be a successful speaker is to maintain eye contact with the audience all through your speech. A lot of people have a tendency to look anywhere, but in the eyes of

the person or the group they are addressing. This habit can be very off-putting for the audience and the speaker will fail to

garner enough attention for himself/herself. Exploit your confidence to the limit and maintain constant eye contact with

the audience, as you speak.

TIP # 13

Maintain Eye Contact Without

StaringWhenever you are speaking with someone, make sure to maintain eye contact without staring . It will force your brain

to stay focused on the conversation. Sometimes a person is not a good listener because his attention is constantly wandering

in and out of the conversation so he has difficulty following the topic. You need to be a good listener in order to be a good

speaker. Work on maintaining eye contact and you can retrain to a new habit.

TIP # 14

Body language

Do not be over stiff while delivering your speech. Body language plays a huge role on how effectively you can deliver

content to others. Little hand movement and facial expressions can induce real life in your speech. Look around and be

comfortable. Transform nervous energy into enthusiasm. Vary the tone of your voice and dramatize if necessary.

TIP # 15

Use your hands

to emphasize all the important points of your speech. Have a default position for them but take one or the two of them out

when the speech needs it. Again, don’t overdo it, just use them when you want to emphasize and give greater power to a word

or sentence.

TIP # 16

Touch

When you are speaking, touching those who hear is a great way of bringing attention into your speech. Again, only touch in those moments you clearly want to emphasize something or also when you want them to feel more personified in what you are saying. Don’t be shy about it, as it will also demonstrate confidence. Have 100% belief when you do it, and avoid the “creepy hand here and there” when speaking with women.

surprise and cocky/funny sometimes.

Do not try to reply a question which you are not sure

You can always tell "I believe I know the answer but let me confirm. Let me get back to you later (after the speech)." This will send a positive message to your audience that you are not

If you did a very minor error or are just feeling nervous, just keep moving along. There is a good chance the audience never
