Background (how we got here)

• Joint Task Force originated from the CEOS WGCV Terrain Mapping Sub Group on the premise that a standard format for sensor parameters should be established. A resolution was passed that stated:

- Noting the disparate way in which Earth observing sensor parameters are specified and quoted, and

- Recognizing that proper use, understanding and intercomparison of sensor parameters depends on clear unambiguous definition,

- WGCV Recommends that a task force be established with ISPRS to formulate a plan for standardization of radiometric and geometric parameters of sensors.

•Collect and collate lists of parameters used to describe Earth observing sensors.

•Make an analysis of these and recommend a standard list of parameters for presenting descriptions of EO satellites.

•Identify ambiguity and confusion within these terms and recommend methods and means of clarifying these issues

•Prepare a document that sets out standard methods of describing EO sensors

•Communicate and consult widely with the user community

Purpose (Why we are here)

• The purpose of this workshop is to:

1. Review best practices for post-launch calibration of commercial aerial and satellite sensor imagery for government uses,

2. Explore possibilities for standardizing calibration practices, and,

• The Workshop will lead to:

A Presentation of these results to the ISPRS General Assembly as a Joint ISPRS/CEOS-WGCV report.

Possible Problem & Resolution

•Problem - The goal of listing and analyzing the many parameters use to describe Earth observing sensors is very ambitious. A recommendation to the full ISPRS Commission is needed by July of 2004.

• Opportunity - During this workshop there will be several presentations that refer to both sensor systems and data products derived from those sensor systems.

• Resolution - The Joint Task Force may want to consider putting forth recommendations concerning a subset of parameters that are discussed at this workshop.

• This does not mean that any topic of discussion at this workshop is lost or less important.

• Taking a smaller piece of work and completing it will be better than not completing a larger amount of work in the eyes of the ISPRS Commission.

• Vicki Zanoni will take over the duties of Joint Task Force Chair for the remainder of its life.

• Vicki will present the findings from this workshop and represent the Joint Task Force at the ISPRS General Assembly meeting in July
