Cancers arise as a result of a series of genetic mutations. A better understanding of the conse-quences of these mutations on the underlying biology of the neoplastic cells will help to focus the development of more effective therapies. Cancer stem cells have now been recognized in a wide variety of human tumors. The existence of cancer stem cells poses challenges and alluring poten-tial for our ability to successfully combat cancer. This symposium aims to bring together scien-tists who are interested in better understanding the mechanisms by which cancer stem cells contribute to tumor heterogeneity, self-renewal and drug resistance. We believe that this is an area of rapid progress in understanding cancer stem cell with immense potential to benefit human health.
