StemGenn: Stem Cells and It’s Global Perspective

What are stem cells ?Stem cells are the basic cells which are present inside human body and plays a very significant and crucial role. They serve as internal repair system and replenish other cells as long as a person is alive due to their ability to self renew or multiply while maintaining the potential to develop into multiple types of cells (220 types).

In human body, various different types of cells are present however the stem cells stand out from all of them because:

• They are self sustainable and can continue to replicate themselves for a longer period of time.

• They are unspecialized and don’t have tissue specific structure due to which they can undergo the process of differentiation and create specialized cells which can perform the desired function.

There are different types and sources of stem cells but all of them have the same capacity to develop into multiple types of cells.

StemGenn: Stem Cells and It’s Global Perspective

Embryonic stem cells

These are the cells which are derived from the early blastocyst stage of the embryo and are being harvested from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst which is fertilized in a woman’s body.

Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they are able to differentiate into all derivatives of the three primary germ layers: ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm and due to this potential of self-renewal, ES cell therapies have been proposed for regenerative medicine and tissue replacement after injury or disease.

However there are certain ethical issues involves as it is considered that by harvesting the embryonic stem cells which involves the destruction of the embryo ,we are killing a possible human life due to this nowadays most embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos which are fertilizes in vitro and then donated for research purposes with the consent of the donors.

Adult Stem Cells Also known as somatic cells, these are also undifferentiated cells which are derived from the specialized tissues and organs. The primary role of these cells is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are present.

As far as the ethical issue is concerned, unlike embryonic stem cells, the adult stem cells can be used in research and therapy as these cells are being derived from sample tissue by the consent of the donor without harming the life of any individual.

Adult stem cell treatments have been used for many years to treat successfully leukemia and related bone/blood cancers through bone marrow transplants.

StemGenn: Stem Cells and It’s Global Perspective

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (IPSC's)Induced pluripotent stem cells are adult, differentiated cells that have been experimentally "reprogrammed" into a stem cell like state where they are being forced to express factors and genes important for maintaining the defining properties of stem cells.

These cells can be made from readily available cells including fat, skin, and fibroblasts (cells that produce connective tissue).

The "reprogramming" process introduces genetic modifications, the safety of using iPS cells in patients is uncertain at present and the research is going on in this as well.

StemGenn: Stem Cells and It’s Global Perspective

Global Perspec-tiveMicroscopic in size, the stem cell holds the potential to revolutionize the healthcare due to which many nations invested heavily in stem cell research and its applications. However, human stem cell research is also controversial with many ethical and regulatory questions that impact a nation’s policies.

At present, the whole stem cells research is mostly revolve around Pluripotent Stem cells because they are undifferentiated cells, which can be differentiated in to any kind of cells. Due to these property clinical applications such as cell and organ replacement along with drug discovery, drug screening and toxicological assessment is possible.

StemGenn: Stem Cells and It’s Global Perspective

The stem cell research has grown remarkably, showing a growth rate more than double the rate of world research pub-lications from 2008 to 2012.

The studies showed that Induced Pluripotent stem cells (iPSC’s) publications have shown a explosive growth and almost dou-ble as compared to both embryonic stem cells (ESC’s) and human embryonic stem cells (hESC’s) .

The graph in the next slide shows the increase in the number of publications for all stem cells.

StemGenn: Stem Cells and It’s Global Perspective

Stem cell research has attracted considerable attention within the scientific community due to which stem cell publications overall are cited 50% more than all other publications in related disciplines, while ES cell publications are cited twice the world rate, and iPS cell publications nearly three times the world rate.

The graph in the next slide shows the citation impact of stem cells :

With the rigorous ongoing research and development on stem cells ,almost half of the publications are related to regenerative medicines or drug development which is a crucial part of Induced Pluripotent Stem cells research.

The graph in the next slide shows the field weighted citation along with the annual growth rate of publications between 2008-2012 :

StemGenn: Stem Cells and It’s Global PerspectiveSummary

Stem cell plays a very significant role due to which a lot of research is going on in this field with some experimental stem cell treatments already in clinical trials.

Debates are also going on regulatory frameworks for facing the challenges of developing, standardizing, and distributing cell-based therapies, while advances in basic research continue to provide a fuller understanding of how stem cells can be safely and effectively used.

The stem cells are currently being used for the treatment of certain diseases however it will be fun watching upto what extent these miraculous cells will spread their magic with continuous ongoing research and clinical trials.
