What is the Nova Awards Program?• A key component of BSA’s STEM initiative. • The Nova Awards are designed to enhance

interest in the STEM fields while making it fun for youth to learn.

• Nova Awards integrate with existing advancement (prerequisite “STEM” merit badges and STEM adventures).

• These awards can be earned by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers.

COL Nova Awards • Several Cradle of Liberty Council Packs and Troops

implemented the Nova Award program since 2012. • John McCawley taught Designed to Crunch (2015)

and Whoosh! (2016) Nova Awards at the COL Merit Badge College and will teach Shoot! in 2017.

• Science is Everywhere lesson plans developed for the Rocket Into Scouting program for Packs to use.

• John McCawley and Kevin McLemore taught Designed to Crunch and Science is Everywhere at the Philadelphia Encampment 2015 and Shoot! in 2016.

• • Supernova Award programs are successful with Cub Scouts. No Boy Scout has been awarded a Supernova Award yet in our council. No Venturerimplementation.
