A Note from Mrs. Michael and Mrs. Routzahn How can it be that the end of the school year is already upon us? We have so enjoyed watching your children grow, thrive, challenge themselves, and complete another successful year at DCES. Our students are bright, engaged, courteous, and hard working. Thank you for all of your support throughout the school year to make sure that your children come to school every day ready to learn and give us their very best – which they certainly do and we could not be prouder of them! As we head into summer, the administrative team will continue to work to finalize staffing and class lists. We anticipate that grade level teachers will be assigned after July 15th and then we will work to finalize class lists. Placement letters will be sent to families in late August. We do have some staff members moving to new positions or placements within the county. A comprehensive list of changes will be sent out in a summer newsletter. For now, please join me is saying farewell to our Mrs. Routzahn. Mrs. Routzahn has brought a wonderful attitude of service to our school and she will be greatly missed by us all. We wish Mrs. Routzahn the very best as she joins the administrative team at Brunswick Elementary. As a result of Mrs. Routzahn’s move, we are excited to welcome the wonderful Dr. Janice O’Hara as our new assistant principal. Dr. O’Hara comes to us with a multitude of teaching and administrative experiences. We will say goodbye to Mrs. Routzan on June 29th and hello to Dr. O’Hara on July 2nd. We hope that you all have a wonderful summer – full of outdoor adventures, family time together, sunshine, warmth, and fantastic memories!
We anxiously look forward to welcoming you all back in September.

STELLAR SUCCESS at DCES!
Dear DCES families-
As many of you know, this will be my last year serving as your assistant principal at Deer Crossing.
Beginning July 1st, I will be the assistant principal at Brunswick Elementary. When I came to Deer
Crossing in 2016, Mrs. Michael’s first words to me were, “We have the best kids and families.” She sure
was correct! It has been my sincere pleasure to meet and support each of you in the Deer Crossing
community. I leave you with mixed emotions. I am very excited to start a new journey, while I will miss
Deer Crossing very much! Please accept my gratitude for your kind words and support through these last
two years. Best wishes to all!
Amy Routzahn
Assistant Principal
5th GRADE CELEBRATION
Celebration Parking:
Parking is limited, so plan to walk or car pool if possible. No parking is allowed on Finn Drive or in the townhouse parking lots. Additional parking is available at the Summerfield pool just past the four way stop sign at the townhouses. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Celebration Arrival:
Doors will open for our guests at 9:30. For the safety of all DCES students, guests may arrive on campus no earlier than 9:15. Anyone arriving earlier will be asked to leave and return.
Dismissal:
Students are allowed to leave with families after the reception with no penalty to their attendance. We simply ask that you write a note beforehand, so we can account for those students leaving. Notes can be sent in anytime this week for Friday dismissal. If you would like to take sibling(s) at that time, please write a SEPARATE note for the sibling's homeroom teacher. We will have a sign out posted in the gym so there will be no need to go to the office that day to sign out your children.
From the Health Room
School is scheduled to close on 6-15-18, and students will be dismissed at 1:30 PM since this is a

I cannot believe that the end of the year is upon us! I am currently
finishing up with the rest of my counseling small groups and seeing
each class for a counseling lesson. Kindergarten through 3rd grade
just completed lessons about careers. Fourth grade had lessons
based on friendship and problem solving. Fifth grade completed a
lesson on digital citizenship and cyber bullying.
School Supply Donations: If you are in need of school supplies for
next year please let me know and I will add you to my list for
donations.
If you are interested in donating supplies, please be on the lookout
for a Find out First message in August in regards to supply donations.
I do work a few days in the summer, but email is the best way to
reach me over the summer. [email protected]
Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing everyone in
September. To my fifth graders, please enjoy the middle school and
remember to always be kind.

** IMPORTANT Reminders: **
PLEASE be sure to remind your child(ren) to wear sneakers & clothing to school on their P.E. days. If you’d prefer your child(ren) wear boots, or another type of shoe, to school on their P.E. days,
please consider packing their sneakers in their backpack for them to change into. Appropriate footwear is so important when participating in P.E. in order to prevent injuries.
FIELD DAY 2018 was a HUGE SUCCESS...
A HUGE THANK YOU to EVERYONE that helped make our Field Day such a big success this year (students, staff & parents)! Switching from a ½ day to a full day Field Day was a big change, but one that I think DCES did a stellar job with!! Also, Congratulations to Mr. Nigh for winning the “Staff Hippity Hop Race” this year … and here’s to a 2019 rematch!

“Music Is the Most Convenient Way to Store Information"
A very special thank you to the parents of my chorus members for
the gorgeous floral arrangement that I received in May. Thank you
also for the gift cards. You are sincerely appreciated.
Another thank you to the parents of the chorus for having your
children prepared and present on a beautiful Sunday morning for
our “make-up performance” of The National Anthem at the Keys
game and on extremely short notice. Thank you to the students for
a great performance.
Music Assessments for grades 1-5 for the 2017/2018 school year
are complete. Our students have done a very nice job on their
FCPS Music Assessments this year. Assessments have involved
individual work and group projects pertaining to Harmony, Listening,
Form, and Improvisation during Semester 2.
Kindergarten students have spent the year singing, learning about
classroom instruments, participating in beginning music reading
activities, experimenting with dramatic play and Rhythm Band
activities.
The study of the recorder begins in the third grade. However, if
you second grade student has mentioned beginning the recorder
recently, it is because we are working on a few skills and
techniques to help students who may try to begin playing on their
own, or who may have a friend that they are trying to learn from.
Some skills/techniques we will finish the year with include sound
production, fingering charts, hand positions, and music reading.
Hopefully these few recorder lessons will help get the students off
to a good start if they are trying to play before having formal
recorder lessons.
It has been a pleasure to teach your children this year.
Have a great summer!
